As RC it went like crazy and even the smaller engines handled nimbly...all reasonably priced. That’s how they managed to sell almost 8 million units!

The 206 isn’t a bad car. It’s genuinely not the best, Hammond is right about the 1.4 engine, the ugly side skirts and whole rear end, and he’s right about how it’s never gonna live up to the 205. But theyre good at being a small car. It’s brilliant on a backroad with the least body roll on any car I’ve driven (only counting stock suspension), there is nothing wrong with the front end at all, and if m&m gave Hammond some diesels to try out he’d have loved it. DV6 engine is chocolate and god awful to work on, but chop back box n put a stage 1 n some nice wheels on a 206 1.6hdi it’ll be great fun till it’s impounded

I'm getting one for my first car good decision?
@Chabarnacle3 жыл бұрын
Your comment is a month old, so maybe you've made your decision since then, but if not I'll tell you what I think about it after 4 years of owning a 1998 1.6 XS : - In terms of reliability, watch out for the head gasket which has a tendency to leak both outside and inside the engine, if it leaks before 120k miles / 200k km then you can suppose that the owner used to push the car while the engine was still cold. There are plenty of documented signs to recognize a blown head gasket, and while the piece itself doesn't cost much at all, you have to take out half of the engine to change it, and that costs a lot. Watch out for the rear axle as well, both wheels should face straight ahead, and not look bent and form a triangle. The 206 and the other Peugeots of this era used a funny rear axle system that while funny to drive, was also unreliable in the long run. The clutch also has a tendency to give up way earlier than expected, mine had to be changed right when I got the car at 65k miles / 112k km, though I assume that's because it was mostly driven in the city for 20 years. I'm now reaching 90k miles / 150k km with it and apart from the clutch, it has had none of the other issues. Apart from that, it's a pretty simple car which shouldn't be much trouble if properly serviced and maintained. Avoid the 1.1 petrol, 1.4 diesel and 1.6 diesel if you can, the 1.1 is just super weak and the two diesels have some reliability problems. The 1.9d diesel is completely outdated noisy and slow but bulletproof, and finally the 1.4 1.6 petrol and 2.0 diesel are the best engines on this car. The 2.0 petrol is a shit ton of fun but it might not be a good pick for a first car, and the fuel consumption is on the level of a modern day V6 sedan. Electrical problems. Mine doesn't have any because it's a 1998 model with old school electronics, and by that I mean that it just doesn't have much of them. But if you get a 2002+ model, then it will be multiplexed (instead of using 50 cables for 50 functions, the car will use 1 cable for 50, you can see where this is going). Most of the electronics of this era sucked, and had funny bugs like your left indicator suddenly being replaced by the horn. The only desirable advantage of the 2002+ models, apart from the fact that they're newer, is that the electronics allow you to check the real time fuel consumption. Apart from that, they aren't really any better than the older models. - Handling. Let me put it this way : anyone you hear who says they have crashed in a roundabout at 20 kmh and this is the worst handling car ever, must be the worst drivers in the world. Mine's a 1998 model so it should technically be one of the most imbalanced 206s out there, and it still drives like a train. I find it way smoother to drive than my parents' Opels, my sister's Nissan, and the Clio 4 I learned to drive on. - Now for what I personally don't like about it : It badly needs a 6th gear for the highway, but the engine bay was too small for that and it would have hurt the turning radius. The dashboard plastics tend to reflect on the windshield when it's sunny. The front left jamb is huge and creates a blind spot right in front of the car, be mindful of that, I've had a few scares. The petrol engines, by today's standards, drink way too much in comparison with what they deliver. I do regret not having the ability to watch the real time fuel consumption, as those petrol engines are tricky to understand. I've had some squeaks and rattles mostly due to the aging plastic, and in some parts of the car where the plastic rubs with metal. It can be easily fixed with some well hidden tape though. The value of this car is way up at least in France, where you simply can't get a diesel model for less than 4k €, so at least here it does sell for more than what it's actually worth.

Iran should have plenty of money from oil in which to start their own automotive industry and design and create cars more in keeping with their needs rather than Outsourcing generally crappy and subpar quality French cars that are at least boring and more seriously unsafe! If they were smart they would have taken over the Holden car manufacturing from Australia and continue to build and refine it's great designs, with large luxurious cars, sports cars, and everything in between. This reminds me of when Eastern Europe used to license and build crappy Fiats because they lacked the ability to make a decent car themselves, and predictably also couldn't build a decent Fiat which is saying a lot about their lack of production ability. Iran could build a car that could be sold throughout the Middle East where gas is plentiful and the distances are vast, if they had bought Holden and built big beautiful Caprices and coupes and also the very popular commodore and made cars that would compete with a Corvette in a modern version of the Monaro, it would have been a very profitable business indeed! So sickening to see money from this crappy design eventually ending up with the holders of the automotive make back in France. Even Iran deserves better than that.
