1999 Toyota 4Runner - Transponder Key Programming

This is a video on the procedure necessary to program the transponder keys on a 1999 Toyota 4Runner Limited. Should work for other years as well.

first off great vid!!! now my question? I have an 00 limited with the original chipped key ziptied under the dash inside the original ignition ring plugged into the truck/ECU? (bought the truck and stumbled onto this) pulled it out and that key goes into the ignition but wont turn it.. I'm guessing new ignition and they bypassed the smart key.. now can I put the ignition ring back on and buy a blank chipped key and program it using the old chipped key? seeing it doesnt have to turn when programming? or is the ignition itself wired to part of the ecu? I know there is to plugs on the ignition ring one for 12v to light up the ring and one for security. right now I have the new ring plugged in for light only the old one is under the dash plugged into the security with original key wired to it.. it's a mess I want to clean up... thanks for any info

Yes, key must be cut first. Check key first to make sure turns lock cylinder before beginning programming sequence.

Here is the problem, i have only 1 key and it's not the original ( master key ) but a copy. Now problem 2. It broke, leaving half key in. I need to buy maybe 2 keys but now the 1 key i had is broken. Will it still work with only a 1 inch going in the ignition once removal of the rest of key?

No, you will have to take a trip to dealership if you can get that key fragment out without damaging cylinder tumblers, they can order a pre-cut master key that should be pre-programmed (depends of your ECM serial) to work. From there you can now go get some cheap keys like these and make some copies from that new master. Good luck.
