19th century Boot Making - Part 1

This series covers how cowboy boots of the Old West were made. In this video I will be reproducing a pair from the 1870's. The construction techniques, type of leather and the machines and hand tools used to make these boots are all from the Civil War to the 1870's. The tin patterns I am using are also from the Civil War and the dye, wax and paste formulas are all made in my shop from 1860's formulas and ingredients.
I made the lasts from original Confederate boot lasts which were made in England and used in the factories and shops in Asheville North Carolina. Civil War style lasts were used in the Old West up until the 1880's. At this time the style was changed to reflect a higher heel.
The machines used are an 1876 Bradbury for the fine stitching and an 1862 to 1872 Columbia International for the side seams and counters. If I get the treadle fixed on the 1863-4 McKay stitcher I will be using that for the soles.
In short, the only difference between these boots and ones in museums and collections is that I made them in this era. There will be virtually no difference between these 1870's boots and those worn in the Old West.
