Pretty sure you can get away with not removing the axle. Just turn the steering wheel to angle the knuckle just right makes it easier to get at the hub bolts.

For anyone else reading, you absolutely can. I just did it in my driveway, took like 15 minutes. On an '03 1500 single cab 4x4 without abs on the front hubs. Hope this helps.

You can, I changed mine out and I didn’t have to remove the axle. Sure it was a pain to work around it but you gotta do what you gotta do without a lift.

Thanks for the video I learned some new tricks, I am a retired mechanic , I did not have the luxury of a lift so it was on jack stands in my garage. I never knew the half shafts popped out that easily Thanks for the tip. I have 250k miles on my 2002 dodge ram . I replaced the hub bearings at about 100k each time almost on the exact mileage. I left my axles in place and just manipulated the axle to reach the bolts that hold the hub in. Your hubs popped out pretty easily, mine not so much. After much banging with a 3 lb mini sledge and heavy duty cold chisel I discovered something interesting. On the ends of the hub where the bolts go through there are 3 indention's. I hit the 3 spots with a a few blows and the hub that was rusted in popped right out. I have done this on the same vehicle 4 times already after discovering this and replaced both front hubs in about 2 hours on the ground with jack stands. Popping the hub initially was the hardest part of the job before I found this trick.

Just finished one. Had to undo the upper ball joint to get clearance to remove the half-shaft inner end. One plus to this was also gaining clearance to remove the hub bolts with an impact wrench. Outside of that, the video was spot on.

Must be nice! I used an air hammer, an oxy torch, penetrant broke a chisel and a 3lb hammer. I just beat the living snot out of it until it finally came out. Glad yours went so smoothly lol. My new hub assembly did not fit inside the spindle very snug, I don't know if that is a problem or not.

I just did this job on a 2004 Dodge Ram. The 3 hub bolts are torqued to 120 ft pounds per the specs I found. I also could not pull the axle clear and have no lift. I used the front of a wooden chair and a board clamped to it and a 10 inch punch mounted in the hole in the board. The tip of the punch was at the same level as the axle. I leaned back in my chair, placed the punch in between the chair and axle then leaned forward on the chair pushing the axle back enough to get access to the 3 bolts.

It should be very close. Both the 2WD and 4WD 02-08 Dodge Ram 1500 use the same front wheel hub bearing assembly. You wouldn't have the front axles to contend with. Hope this helps you out.

Is easier on the floor since you have more leverage on the bolts to remove the bearings, and if they have never been replaced before is an even way easier process. Is a 4 hour job for both sides without special tools or lift ,and while having a few beers and watching a game on the phone 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I followed the instructions. My CV axle would not come out as shown but the easy fix to that is to remove the tie rod and the upper A-arm and the wheel assembly fold away giving very easy access for removal of the axle. Only added 15 minutes to the project.

Did this job last week after watching the video . Replaced the wheel assembly and axle while I was at it . Remove the upper control arm to get the axle out .spent an unnecessary amount of time by not doing so initially. Cover the ring on the cv with grease to stay in place

A good way to break the hub free is back the hub bolts out a quarter inch and then hold a socket on the bolt while someone turns the steering wheel. that will press the socket against the bolt and hub housing. popped mine right out

You may want to check the sensor connection to make sure that it's on securely and that there's nothing such as a piece of dirt or rust that could be affecting the sensor connection.

good video i used it to change mine alot easier to drop the upper a arm from the frame axle will drop right out and hub was seazed so back bolts out flush with the nut. and beat it out with long 18 mm socket on the bolts didnt mess up threads worked like a charm.. but thanks for the video very informational

from what it sounds like, the bearing separated itself from the hub. most likely you will need to use some sort of impact hammer to jar the bearing free from the steering knuckle. You will need to be careful not to score up the face of the knuckle where the bearing sits.

You may need to pry down on the lower control arm (if you can) to get some more clearance.

If you have the older style ram with the cone style bearings, you would have to replace them and repack them with your hand.

wow cool video, nice to see this type of detail for some folks who aren't too sure. I have a rubbing sound which is cyclical, and the sounds speeds up and slows down as i acxcelerate and/or decelerate. i guess next thing to do is to confirm it is the wheel bearing. at this point I am not certain. the last time i had it replaced by a shop, which is unfortunately out of business. i don't drive my truck much, and it appears to be the wheels bearing on the drivers side. i am going to check it.

Struggled badly to go the axle out, hit it with a hammer saw it move just like the video suggested, couldn't tell very well where to reach up with the pry bar to get the leverage needed to pop the axle out...seems like it was just binding, tried every wich way to get it free but just exhausted myself in the process, couldn't get it before dark, had to leave up on the jack overnight.... Will try again in the morning...

I could not get that axle out, I had to change the bearing hub with out taking out the axle out, made for very hard putting the new bearing hub on. 3 grown men, and none of us could get the axle out working on the ground with floor jack and stands. mabe we needed a hoist. ?

Good video. I appreciate it, especially since you give torque numbers. I need to do this, but I am expecting a big fight. I ended up paying someone to do the rear breaks because I was only able to get one wheel off the hub. The wheels them selves were so rusted on, I could not get them loose with a 15 lb sledge. :/ You didn't mention putting on any thread locker. Is that not really necessary?

Sounds like I'm driving on nobbie tires. Do you think it's likely to have two fail so close together (95k miles) or that the one replaced was detective?

DONEGOT EM Hi. Yes, a loud hum, like I was riding on knobby tires. But, you can also jack up both sides an turn the tire. Listen for a grinding sound (it may be subtle). Compare against the other side. Also, once I got the bolts out, I had to bang the heck out of it with a mini sledge to get it out. Other posts suggest spraying a lubricant.

Not sure what the deal is with my 2007 but axle nut is 36mm. Half shaft was on a bind. Had to put Jack under the arm even then axle wouldn't come out. Had to pry on axle one way and housing other way and then barely got out. Just did that. Not sure I'm gonna be able to get it back in without taking the knuckle loose though.

Update. Got the axle back in. Had to Jack up the arm again then put a small ratchet strap on axle to help compress then a large ratchet strap to pull the housing over. I had that sucker super tight and it was still a PITA but I got it without taking the knuckle loose. If I had to do it over though I would seriously think about taking the knuckle loose from the beginning. I hate laying on my back fighting with crap

Patrick noone Popping the upper ball joint out gives you way more room to play. I watched this video in awe that he was even able to get the half shaft out. I did a truck years ago and couldn't get the shaft out or back in without popping the ball joint.... oddly enough, after I got the whole works back together, I only made it a block before the shaft popped out on it's own on the diff end. The clip must not have seated

Help, I have been hammering away at the old hub assembly for more than two hours with a 4lb and then 6lb sledge. The hub is dented up from all the hitting but can't separate the rusted old hub. I am not hitting gently. The knuckle is aluminum on this 2002 2wd dodge. I have added tons of penetrating fluid over the course of the hours, but the hub has not budged AT ALL. I took a break after an hour of hammering, and built a punch from some reducing bushings (black pipe) stacked from 2" down to 1". I've been hammering at that for another hour, but still nothing. I am applying gentle heat to the knuckle now as I don't want to make the aluminum brittle from heating, and then I will try some more. Any hints????

You may want to double check all of the bolts to make sure that they all have been removed, and that there's nothing still securing the hub to the knuckle. It should break free for you. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

Thanks, I got it in the end after reading a great post from a fellow from Alaska. Where I live it is not so extreme, but we do get a lot of winter salt on our roads, which results in extreme penetrating rust. He recommended using heat to "crush" the internal rust by expansion, and then adding penetrating oil while the old hub cools. Next, lay on it with the hammer. I combined his advice for heating with other advice from other sites which mentioned using and old 15mm socket and old extension to beat on the 3 retaining bolts from the back side to drive the hub out (after re-inserting the bolts and threading in almost all the way). This worked REALLY WELL, and I had each hub out in about 45 minutes this way (15 minutes for heating, and 10-30 minutes for driving the bearing assembly out. Thanks for responding-- you have a great service to the community at large--keep it up!!

I busted my butt for 2 hrs trying to remove the axle shaft from the axle spline . I was able to get the seperation but I can not compress the shaft enough to get it to clear the spline and drop out I noticed you were doing this video on the passenger side. I am trying to remove the driver side. I also noticed that you pulled the shaft to the hub and went up to get the axle to clear the spline shaft. Any ideas what I can try next?

If it's a chunky grinding type of noise, then it's likely a wheel bearing. As you said, it goes away when you turn left, which would indicate that it's the front right bearing. (when you turn left, the weight shifts to the right side of the vehicle) It is best to change both, however. If one is bad, the other isn't too far behind, like headlights.

Why do you pull the axle?

You need to remove the axle so that you can remove the bolts on the back of the wheel bearing assembly that secure it to the steering knuckle. Without removing the axle, it gets in the way. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

You don't need to remove the axle on the 4WD either. It's easier to loosen the bottom nut on the steering knuckle, and remove the nut on the top steering knuckle and slide the axle out of the spindle that way.

Just got done doing both rotors, brakes and a driver side wheel bearing. Took my time and finished in about two hours... Thanks to your videos, it was a very easy job. Thank you for posting.. and thank you for the bolt sizes and tourqe specs....

Please start all bolts nuts by hand unless u want to retap the threads or worse replace more parts.

@tonyjoke If it's giving you a hard time on the transmission end you can use a small pry bar to help push it out of the transmission. It shouldn't take a whole lot of pressure to remove it. Hope this helps you out.

You could try to take the nut off of the axle at spray it with penetrating oil to see if it will free up for you. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
