Regular electric tape is 185F, while 3M Scoth tape 33+ and many other better tapes by the same mfr are 221F. The wire loom also is rated to 257F, so the the tape is being insulated. The engine itself only gets to 220F approx (exhaust can be 500F range)......so you will be okay. You can use PRIMARY WIRE (rated at 185F). The engine area does not get as hot as you think, and if it did, you would not even be able to touch the battery, cap on brake fluid bottle, or windshield fluid bottle. As long as no direct contact with the engine. For tape, try getting Tesa 51026 tape, which is designed for engine harness work.....if you can find it. I prefer solder, but often there is no room, so crimping works best. I would not use his crimping tool....next step up is Channel Lock 909, or a ratcheting tool (Klein, or Titan crimp tool). Klein are better. Many like Titan, only $20 right now at Princess Auto (Canada). However, sometimes you want to use Channel Lock 909, because it has a smaller head and gets into tighter spots. Also the channel lock has INSULATED and NON INSULATED.....and for the crimps he used (Insulated).....many people prefer using the channel lock on the non-insulated mode (it really tightens it down). Only issue is some butt connectors with heat shrink feature might tear, try test sample, and if it does tear, then use the insulated portion of the channel lock plier. On the other hand, you can put heat shrink over it and have double safety. Some people also like to add at the ends of the heat shrink a dab of Permatex Liquid Tape. It also saves a lot of time, on little repairs where bare wire is exposed....and has a temperature rating of -50F to 275F. Scotty Kilmer loves liquid tape, but uses a different brand. Before using, apply steel wool if wire is oxidized, if wire is dirty, wipe down with isopropyl alcohol....and apply at least 2 coats. This is amazing stuff. If you have a heat gun, use that over a torch....less chance of burning the wire, and a better job. I'm not a auto wiring professional doing wiring all day long, but have read and done enough jobs as needed.

Wouldn't solder and heat-shrink tubing be a preferable method of repair?
@Pinkielover3 жыл бұрын
i would , And make sure the heat shrink tubing is waterproofed.. There's a couple different types of heat sheink tubing..One that has glue on the inside of the tubing,To make it watertight seal...

the extra tube helps as a heat shield and to increase the bending radius so the wires don’t faigue when manipulating the harness. bear in mind some wires have teflon insulation when near hot areas. those are expensive and have very good termal stability. many wires in the engine bay are teflon coated. next to exhaust (like o2 sensors) I saw that fiberglass sleeve shield is used instead of plastic flexible tube.

I was replacing the ebrake cable and found that the wires for the fuel pump are hanging on by a thread. Fortunately they’re damaged right before a connector that’s accesible (not hidden away right at the pump) so it won’t be too hard to fix, I’ll just have to be laying down under the vehicle to do it. After I make the repair I’ll have to make sure the plastic wire sheathing is over the wires because I think that was part of the issue. I’m glad I found that now and not on the way to work.

Millennium Honda in Garden City NY, charged my friend $977 to do this. I told her to dispute this with her CC company and file a complaint with the BBB, DMV, Honda Corp and the NYS Attorney General. Even at a dealership this should be no more than 1 hour in their rate book, at the most and that's being generous. Parts is literally pennies. This is literally fraud.

If you twist the bare wires, the circumference is increased and makes it harder to insert into the butt connector.

I'm not an electrician, but if yu think about it, staggering the repair joints seems more conducive to arcing. Because if the path travels up the wire between the insulation and heat shrink, then a staggered joint gives it another possible opening to go into, and travel to the next open joint under the heatshrink. but if they're beside each other, it would have to do a Uturn and come back to the open joint, which I'm guessing it wouldn't... Idk, I'm guessing at the whole thing, lol

Is there a source where I can buy wiring harnesses and wiring components, like connectors? A F'n rabbit made a next on top of then engine and chewed up the wires, including the connector, where they go from the ignition coils down the back of the engine to the injector rails. It's a nightmare.

Hey guys can you please always tell the people what we are fixing and what we are watching that's being fixed or else there's a lot of electronic wiring systems that I still don't recognize and I didn't understand what we are switching is it the injector coil covering electronic harness or is this the complete harness?

What if one used slightly thicker gauge wire? Should you still get a working connection but back end problems occurring, or it's possible it still acts like a dead connection?
@zero.g132 жыл бұрын
perfect explanation and tutorial, one question though. since the wires were colored and obvious where they were going to go, why not just cut off the whole end, patch it up at a workbench, then just bring it over and clip/shrink it back to the exposed wires rather than hanging over the engine the whole time?

Is it better to use hair dryer instead of flame torch? I saw the burn on shrinking tube, that is no good. Another method, if we have no splice, we can twist wires together and soldering them. (smooth the surfaces, if there are any sharp edges of conductor (by scissor or cut-able tools, otherwise they will cut the tape and shrinking tube). Then, tape them about 2 layers, then use shrinking tube to cover them again(in order to protect moisture as the instructor said).

Volvo put the hard covers on the wires so when the insulation wears off you bring it in for servicing (check engine light) and they say mam its your harness you need a new one its $2200 with labor ...or you can just use this as a down payment on a brand-new Volvo...THEY SMART ..we dumb.
