For anyone watching this. If you run into trouble trying to get the bottom bolt in through the lower spacer bracket, remove that lower bracket altogether and put it on the alternator outside the car. Then when you put the alternator back in, its much easier to reach up and bolt the bottom bracket to the motor where there is much more hand room. Also it is optional whether or not you put the cable clip on the new alternator. With the terminals secured it wont be moving around anyways, and those brackets are known to cut your hands to shreds when working around them.

I used your video for my daughters 03 civic......great video but one "improvment" since the bumper shroud is already off, 4screws and the driver headlight assembly comes out and leaves a nice access port to work through and remove alternator through it as well as easier to see the various bolts and gives you a decent view of the belts and pulleys........just a simple suggestion or addition.......you guys ROCK thank you for the videos, huge fan, even mounted a tv in garage so I can play pause while working from your vdeos

Great video, it was a huge help!! One suggestion to anyone reading this *before* they do the work: wait to undo the battery cable wire and the plug from the alternator until *after* you get it fully loose. You can get the alternator into the nice open area vacated by the PS pump to easily access those two things, you can see the guy in the video struggle to get those off with the alternator in place, there was no need for that :-)

I used this video to replace my 21 year old alternator with an upgraded high output 130 amp alternator. If anyone else does this make sure you upgrade the cable that goes to the battery with a 4 AWG stranded cable. Not doing so can be very dangerous. Excellent video and thanks so much.

very informative how-to! Most places want several hundred dollars for labor but I was able to do this myself in about 3 hours. Getting the old alternator out was straight forward and took about 1 hour of careful work. Putting the new one in required more work, about 2 hours. My OEM refurbished alternator was slightly wider than the car's hinge so I had to grind down the joint margins just a bit to make it fit. Threading the bottom screw + washer + track + hole was a nightmare. I ended up temporarily anchoring the alternator and then blindly threaded the screw + washer + track. That one screw took a good 20 minutes of effort. Putting the main belt on three pulleys was also a challenge until I put maximum slack on the tension washer. I agree with the comment about waiting to dismount the alternator before unlocking the power cables -- it's very difficult to do when still mounted because of small space. I also agree with the comment about first threading the holes in the new alternator before placing in the car. It makes it easier to thread later when it's in the car. I used both socket and allen wrenches, a crow bar, and penetrating oil. I highly recommend a flexible magnet (it's a very long malleable rod with a magnet on the end) for retrieving the dropped screws/bolts. No matter how careful you are you are bound to drop at least one. =)

Obviously late reply. Some advice on this part, if you cut the left tire far to the right, you can reach your hand in there and actually fill it and feed the bolt through. If you're REALLY having issues you might save yourself some time, break the bolts loose on the tire, then jack it up, pull the tire off, you can easily get two hands in there to do it. I personally did my SERP belt/ alty replacement/install all at once and I did it with the front tire off to make the job way easier and faster.

Good video but expect this to take a couple of hours if you have never done this. Getting the lower alternator bolt and adjuster into the new alternator was the most difficult. You cannot see the bottom bolt and must do everything by feel. My reman alternator did not want to fit into the bracket at the top. With pliers you may have to push the new alternator bushing in to gain clearance. Clear the paint in the new alternator’s bolt holes with the old bolts before installing the new alternator.

every day i take off the positive and negative terminals on my battery when i park it for more than couple hours.. i have drains on my electrical system which i cant seem to find by pulling the fuses.. however i tested the body to NEG post , with nothing connected to the battery and i got 10 volt reading .. could this be a bad battery ?

+Frank James It might be. Have you tried a different battery for the heck of it ?

1A Auto Parts Heres what i did.. took off the main 2 lead wires to the fuse box under hood .. and tested for leaks ..i had no leaks, but when i put them back i get 12 volts leaking... (testing in series from negative post to negative wire) but i pull all fuses 1 by one and relays without the leak going away so i feel stumped . Alsoi can drive to work and remove the positive and 8 hours later i can drive it home but if i stop 10 minites for a coffee without removing the positive.. it cranks but no start until i spray quick start into the air intake.

seems like a nightmare of a job.

christ, honda engineers sure didnt make this easy to get done. I've likely got to help a friend this weekend on his civic as it sounds like his alternator bearing is going out. On my old car (90's celica) they had it mounted up top next to the exhaust manifold, pretty much just had to unscrew 2 bolts, the tensioner and you got it popped off. Was like a 10 minute job. I'm not exactly looking forward to this after we just had to replace his starter and pcv valve a week ago.

But here is the problem somebody had the car before me they put the wrong size bolt in there so now unfortunately the alternator holder is attached to the engine
