actually, if you remove the pulley and the four bolt, you can move the front part and don't even have to mess with the brushes and other internal parts.

Absolutely. Mark the shaft and nut so the nut goes back in at exactly the same position. remove the nut, washer, pulley, spacer fan. Remove the bolts that hold the 2 sides of the case together. Gently slide the case apart just enough to gain clearance. Rotate the back of the case to the correct position and you're done.

Does "clocking" change how the alternator works or is it just moving the terminals for a better physical location? In other words, does it change the timing like is done with motors?

So I need to replace my tractor alternator and I was looking up "clock position" because some hillbilly in the past hillbilly engineered the mounting holes at the 2 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions instead of 12 and 6. Ever seen that?

The most important questions wy you need to clock the alternators
@70boss3515 жыл бұрын
Rene Fontanez there’s usually interference between the placement of the charging post on the alternator and engine, for instance: connection too close to dipstick, bracket, head... etc. Clocking it will free up the space between the alternator positive post and a possible interference which may be a fire hazard or very bad short!

Basically alternators are mounted in different locations on the front of engines. Clocking it, moving the location of the battery/hot post so it doesn't come into contact with anything.

Thanks. I bought a 200$ alternator from power master for my 89 Grand awagoneer. They claim it fits.. but the bolt holes are on the wrong sides.. the plug for the exciter wires is in the wrong spot. And the positive post touches my engine.. what in the hell power master. If you say it fits my Jeep it better fit my Jeep.. shouldnt have to taking the casing off on a 200$ alternator

You might want to point out that the black piece with the coils attached to it, needs to come up with the back plate, they were stuck to the front plate on mine and the alternator wasn't coming apart like yours did. Once I got the black piece loose, everything came apart very easily. Oh and failing to do so will do damage to the internal workings of the alternator.
