In this video, 1A Auto shows you how to replace the intake manifold gaskets on a small block Chevy 350 / 5.7L engine. While we did this on a 1996 GMC Sierra K1500, this process is essentially the same on all small block Chevrolet engines.
This process should be similar on the following vehicles:

1990 GMC K1500 Truck
1991 GMC K1500 Truck

I'm not educated in auto repair so I did f#$^% up when i misunderstood inch pounds for foot pounds and snapped a bolt on my intake. I'll never do that again. But it did set me back about eight hours. I'm reinstalling everything this mourning. I'm sure it will start soon. Thanks to this video that you guys took the time to shoot and post. Thanks again.

I just completed this job on my 1998 Silverado. I have very little mechanical experience and this job would have been way over my head if it wasn't for this video. I can't express how much I appreciate the detailed video, the fantastic camera angles, and thorough explanation of what was going on. There were a few small differences between my vehicle and the one in the video, but nothing significant. This video saved me quite a bit of money over taking it to a mechanic. I wish I could buy you guys a beer. Thank you so much for posting this.

I had the notorious intake coolant leak on my 5.7 1998 Silverado. It's been about 10 years but I know I didn't remove the power steering pulley. I believe I just loosen the bolts enough on the bracket to clear the manifold. Nice video.

Thank you SO MUCH for this amazing video tutorial. This was officially my first ever engine repair job -- I have some basic mechanical experience, but nothing to the level required to do this job without some serious guidance. The video was detailed enough that I successfully replaced my lower and upper intake manifold gaskets and managed to repair the infamous coolant leak that is so common on the GMC trucks. Thanks again for the excellent video -- I felt empowered to tackle this job with the confidence that I knew (and understood) what I needed to do. Keep up the great work, it is genuinely appreciated!

I'll use your video as guide to get the engine back to running condition. Hopefully, the intake leak and subsequent block filling didn't damage the engine.

Incredible video, and great information. For those who break the plastic quick disconnect on the heater line to the intake man. I found a good write up to fix that. Also, I noticed my hardware was more standard than metric (9/16s opposed to 15mm) so be wary of that if your tools are not an exact fit

useful video thank you. I have a 96 and 5 liter that uses 1 quart or less of fluid in anitfreeze per whole year..it shows up as a clean spot of one side of each plug on #6 and #8. Full compression, factory fuel mileage, full power.. it was mystery. it must be the last channel of coolant on the head from intake gasket. It uses such a small amount, I don't even want to tear into it...some years it uses none.

I just bought a 97 Tahoe. The previous owner neglected to tell me it has a blown head gasket and cancelled title. I'll have to get him to sign it over to me at the DMV, and I think I can do the head gasket myself, thanks to your video. I learned a few things I wasn't figuring. I'd like to swap the Camshaft, lifters, and valve springs while I'm in there doing the head gasket. I'm still researching which camshafts and intake manifolds that are compatible with this year engine. I was planning on going with a Summit Racing 4x4 cam and beehive LS1 springs, but I'll check out the A1 website first and see what you've got for this project

Did this on the exact same motor due to some broken bolts in the manifold. We put the gasket maker on the valley pretty thick, but now it’s idling high at around 1300rpm. If there’s a leak at that valley seal will it cause a vacuum leak? Leak down test showed nothing

On the removal of the p/s pump pulley and the a/c compressor bracket, it leaves me stumped. There is a 13mm or 15mm nut (I forget which size) on the driver's side of the engine between the back of the p/s pump and the exhaust manifold. After removing the three bolts and the one nut from the front of the a/c compressor bracket, remove the aforementioned nut between the back of the p/s pump and the exhaust manifold. This will allow the a/c compressor bracket to be slid forward enough to have access to the front lower intake manifold bolt and take it out. The back of the a/c compressor bracket covers that front bolt. Then when the other seven lower manifold bolts are removed the manifold can be lifted out.

you can remove a broken hose connector with a hacksaw blade, cut 180 degrees apart carefully until almost all the way through then the two pieces can be removed, done this on 2 trucks over the years. to avoid breaking them off in the first place give them a little heat and some wax and turn it cautiously and they will usually come on out. when you are done don't buy a replacement, put in an old school hose connector from a small block and clamp the hose on like the old days.

Coolant loss, which is caused by deterioration of intake manifold gaskets, due in part, at least, to JUNK factory lower intake manifold. Buy an aftermarket lower intake unit, if you want to permanently "fix" the problem...

I don't believe you need to remove any of the power steering stuff for this job. For heads, sure, but not intake manifold gaskets. Way more work than it's worth.
@brianboehmer43

Just did this job and if you have AC, you have to take the power steering pulley off to get the bracket off to get the valve cover off. It's like the lady that swallowed a fly.

You can loosen the nut between the power steering bracket and exh manifold on top of the three bolts and nut which allows you to slide the bracket forward enough to clear it.

You did a great job but there's a massive amount of cleaning you could have done instead of leaving the gunk everywhere. Cleaning all that lets you know if you have a leak somewhere in the future instead of guessing where it's coming from.

I bought that power steering pump pulley tool (remover and installer) and the installer wouldn't fit. Same issue as y'all. Tried the alternator bracket thread hack and didn't work either. The pulley gets on about 3/4 of the way and won't budge anymore. Even tried buying a new pulley thinking I mushroomed the originally pulley when removing it. I even tried heating the pulley. Any ideas?
@JangusMc
@JangusMc 6 жыл бұрын
Mine required a TREMENDOUS amount of force to put it in. Enough that afterwards I was wiped for the evening. I started the pulley on with a dead blow hammer just to get it started and straight, and then reefed on it until I thought I was going to blow a hernia. I'd suggest making sure everything is absolutely clean before reinstall, as any rust or scuffs will make it quite a bit harder. It was the hardest part of the reinstall.

NO. SFI intakes (OBD II system) are different castings. Those who have a SFI engine should buy an aftermarket lower intake unit, or you'll be revisiting this issue, sooner or later. Factory lower intake castings for '96-'98 SFI engines are JUNK...
