That being said, I ended up going with the other Magus video you had. The one video that tested rather a fully armored character vs a multiclassed magus would have higher AC or not. My Magus is not DEX based because I knew it would upset my DM having an AC that's to the moon and I figured it would also upset my party 😅 I would love to be DEX based tho, failing reflex saves suuucks

a Tiefling Magus with the Prehensile Tail and Scaled Skin alternate racial trait is far superior to an Elf Magus. the tail can hold your Metamagic Rod and leave both hands still free to use Spell Combat, and +1 Natural Armor is really useful

That is indeed also a powerful way to go. I usually just assume that my metamagic rods are all just bandoleered to my chest and I just tag one up when I need that quickened goodness. Prehensile Tail is definitely one of my favorite racial traits though. I guess my elf will have to take adopted and choose vanara or something so I can have my tail and eat it too! Really though, good point.

Hi there was an error in action economy. You can’t actually cast a spell and deliver it with a Vital Strike in the same turn. The actions for spellstrike, ignoring spell combat which is irrelevant to the hypothetical, is casting the spell as a standard action and delivering it as a free action, just with a weapon as a normal action. To Vital Strike on top you’d have to spend a second standard action to perform it, unless you quickened the initial spell
@neocalder12286 жыл бұрын
Have you looked into the fighter 5 brawler 1 build that has casting based on your fortitude save? I believe it's called the iron caster and it comes up if you Google that. I think it might be up your alley and if love to just hear your thoughts on it and it's application. I think that you might want to do some weird multicass with 1 swashbuckler for parry and riposte 2 paladin for the saves but I can't think of anything else. I wanna play this for an upcoming game.

He did, and yes this is my favorite trait when GMs let it work the way it read. I'm sure it was just a slip-up on Paizo's part, but I still plug Magical Lineage pre-errata both because of the second trait that has never received errata and because of the fun to be had with the limitless shenanigans with level 1 spells it brings to the table.
@anarcnamedjustin34516 жыл бұрын
How do you mean unlimited? Magus doesn't even get unlimited level 0 spells, they only get a limited few, which is real sad and a reason I'm making sure to be good without spells too, but it states on Magus that they, at level 1 at least get 3 cantrips a day, 5 at full level, and that cantrips don't get expended when used only in the say of not having to alot 2 Brands a day to cast it twice like you have to do for higher level ones, you can still only cast 3/5 a day
@anarcnamedjustin34516 жыл бұрын
Granted, that would mean you can cast 5 as cantrips, then 5 as level one generally, or use level 1 slots for other things like healing or color spray
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry I guess I should have talked about how cantrips work. Here, this is from the magus class entry: Cantrips: A magus can prepare a number of cantrips, or 0-level spells, each day, as noted in the table above under “Spells per Day.” These spells are cast like any other spell, but they are not expended when cast and may be used again.
@anarcnamedjustin34516 жыл бұрын
The wording and between several other classes does get quite confusing, every prepared caster has slightly different wording, and me and my GM looked around and decided that cantrips are infinite
@JonDesautels6 жыл бұрын
This is an example of how Min/Maxing can get cheaty. Here's a response in the forums from a Lead Designer at Paizo about a very similar trait Magical Lineage. These traits are meant to reduce the penalty on a metamagic feat, not reduce the level of a spell. Jason Bulmahn's response in a thread about stacking Wayang Spellhunter and Magical Lineage to get super-cantrips. Jason Bulmahn wrote: Hey there Folks, Magical Lineage was never intended as a way for you to actually lower a spell's level. It was put in to allow you to reduce the increase from a metamagic feat. I am aware of both of these. I was aware of them before I made this video. Nevertheless, "cheaty" is an incorrect term to apply here, and I stand by using them. Yes, errata is in place to make things more balanced, and honestly I feel like both ML and WS slipped under the radar a little bit, but errata isn't a set in stone sort of thing unless it's PFS or the GM says so. It's totally fair, for all you GMs who come here and see me writing this, to ban either of these. However, one can just as easily respond to super cantrips with things like SR, resistance, immunities, and the like. Calling the use of feats and things pre-eratta "cheaty" makes about as much sense as going into a private wow server that plays on an old patch and saying the same.

Hi, I was trying to replicate this build (however with a dex based magus, taking dervish dance to use a scimitar to add dex damage to str and dmg, and, after spending a long time reading some excruciating long forum and FAQ posts I have a few questions: 1. you mention adding the Keen enchantment as well as physically enchanting the blade, but it specifically states in the FAQ that you cannot enhance a black blade in such a way, meaning that a large ability to increase your crit range is lost. 2. can you elaborate how this character would look in terms of ability scores with a 25point buy system? with a base 20 strength it looks like you'd seriously have to sacrifice on the dex or int bonuses for the character. 3. finally, how can you add the .5 modify to the weapon as you can't use shocking grasp and the spell mechanic if you are 2 handed fighting I love your vids and I think they're great - from a fellow obsessive min-max'er
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Hi! 1. That was indeed an error on my part. We'll need to take the Improved Critical feat (probably by getting the Training enchantment for some cestus or the like), and enhance our blade with our arcane pool. 2. Dump CHA into the dirt, get your int up to 16 so you don't lose spell access, and choose a race that'll keep your str high without sacrificing con or dex too much, as it does ya no good if you died. 3. I think this is like the 3rd time I've had to answer this one, but here's a ruling from the Paizo guys What kind of action is it to remove your hand from a two-handed weapon or re-grab it with both hands? Both are free actions. For example, a wizard wielding a quarterstaff can let go of the weapon with one hand as a free action, cast a spell as a standard action, and grasp the weapon again with that hand as a free action; this means the wizard is still able to make attacks of opportunity with the weapon (which requires using two hands). As with any free action, the GM may decide a reasonable limit to how many times per round you can release and re-grasp the weapon (one release and re-grasp per round is fair). Hope that helps!

Black Dragon Gaming Stigmata grants the Holy V. Wounds tied to her God that they can make bleed. The bleed damage is half Holy Vindicator level but grants the same bonus to any one rolls. Attack, skills, saves, AC, etc for as long as it goes on. Eventually it gets added fire damage as well and the sacred or profane bonuses it grants are high flexible.

A paladins Lay of hands or clerics healing can easily mitigate that bleeding for essentially free sacred bonses.

Taking Power Attack and Furious focus is a very bad idea with magus. Power attack significantly penalizes your hit chance, especially on a 3/4 BAB class, but Furious Focus can be used ONLY when you are wielding a two-handed weapon or a one-handed weapon with two hands. This basically disables the feat in the same round that you use Spell combat, as it strictly requires you to have one hand free in order to cast a spell. Piranha strike/Arcane strike is way better alternative here. Called Shots mechanic is an alternative system that I imagine many GMs won't allow, so again, badly spent feats in my opinion. Picking both Magic Lineage and Wayang Spellhunter is extremely cheesy way (and should not be legal) to basically put the level of the spell down. Man, this build requires to convince the GM to use an obscure alternate rules system, use Furious Focus which is very inefficient on a magus since you cannot pair it with Spell Combat, and then basically cheat your way to lower the level of Shocking Grasp to a cantrip. ALSO I totally forgot about the Vital Strike part, which is a standard action. In order for the build to work, it needs a full round of setup to cast a spell and move, and then next round to attack. For a mobile, melee-oriented class like a magus that's less than efficient. Enemies can focus the magus from afar or drop a save-or-suck spell while he's ramping up in order to even be able to strike.

I don't think this build works the way you think it does, don't get me wrong still a lot of dmg but... It seems like you are forgetting that Spell Combat is a full round action and cannot be combined with Vital Strike which is a standard action or are you taking a full round to prepare this shot? Also how are you doing somatic components with a two handed weapon?
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Hi! There's been a lot of FAQ on the magus for these exact reasons. I'll copy/paste them here for you. Can a magus use spellstrike to cast a touch spell, move, and make a melee attack with a weapon to deliver the touch spell, all in the same round? Yes. Other than deploying the spell with a melee weapon attack instead of a melee touch attack, the magus spellstrike ability doesn’t change the normal rules for using touch spells in combat. So, just like casting a touch spell, a magus could use spellstrike to cast a touch spell, take a move toward an enemy, then (as a free action) make a melee attack with his weapon to deliver the spell. (Oftentimes in our case, we either cast and pass, or have been holding the charge prior to round 1 so we can vital strike as a standard action and deliver the spell. I am taking a bit of a leap and assuming that Vital Strike while holding the charge would fall into the "If you touch or are touched, the spell discharges" clause, I'm sure that's how most would rule if, for example, you were Unarmed Strike while holding the charge, and Spellstrike is supposed to work the same way) Here's the answer to your second question: Two-Handed Weapons: What kind of action is it to remove your hand from a two-handed weapon or re-grab it with both hands? Both are free actions. For example, a wizard wielding a quarterstaff can let go of the weapon with one hand as a free action, cast a spell as a standard action, and grasp the weapon again with that hand as a free action; this means the wizard is still able to make attacks of opportunity with the weapon (which requires using two hands). Thanks for bringing these up! Sometimes I forget to add all the minutiae when recording, and I realize how some might be confused without the knowledge.

Heightened Spell specifically saying it occupies a spell slot of a higher level. 1 is not higher than 1......
@ashvandal56976 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think all DMs everywhere should allow players and their spellcasting enemies to benefit from Heighten Spell if applied to spells otherwise metamagic'd, either automatically, or by feat tax. Why not? A spell at a higher spell slot basically only increases it's save dc, and makes metamagic feats other than quicken and dazing spell actually worth something. If enemies can do it, than it should be fair game. And doing this whole process is bought with a feat tax of actually having to take Heighten Spell, an otherwise worthless feat. Should just be errated. Makes low level spells much better at scaling.

Wow, that's some math put together! We got a an elf magus using a build like this going for damage and speed as his min max glory. Guy has an initiative of 30+ and is dubbed the Quick... no one argues his nickname. Had a duel with him with my assimar cleric, and the only reason won was having an idea of his attacking abilities and spells reducing damage by arounf 90-95%... then a stupid high Intimdiate demoralize challenge followed by Hold Person, which his will save wasn't that good, and a coupe to grace with a Strength domain cleric. Reminds me, my cleric can put out lots of damage that most just don't see coming. Not as much as this build you made, but attacks that are 1d6 + 50 from a cleric aren't usually expected. Still, a magus is a great DPS class and great for those that want a magic damage dealer fighter/barbarian in mind.
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
Initiative of 30+ you say? That's nuts! Mine has an initiative of 20 last time I checked on him, how'd your guy get his initiative so high? I have also seen some gnarly clerics. Maybe not clerics of drunken heroes, but there are definitely some great cleric spells made for putting the hurt on. How'd you do it?
@kirkmccullar99496 жыл бұрын
The elf Magus, Timolin the quick I don't know all of it, but having feats and abilities that super jack his initiative. I'll ask how he got such an impressively quick number. For my cleric, a combination of the Holy Ice spell, Divine Favor spell, cavalier gendarme archetype to get challenge plus power attack, Ferocity strength subdoman, and a few ways to enhance strength from belt to magic spells, the extra damage piles up. I've no doubt fighters and other classes can do more, but having a magic Holy Rapier in one had, shield in the only, fighting the good fight for the drunken hero makes for great stories. Perhaps for your min max series, you could look into how to max out initiative so that other folks can have "the Quick" in their campaigns.
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
I'll throw in on the long-term to do list! I didn't realize you'd multiclassed Gendarme, and now I'm starting to see it. That's easily my favorite cavalier archetype. Are you mounted and charging a bunch?
@kirkmccullar99496 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, lvl 1-4 was a cleric, but we had like three rogues and no marshall class for awhile and I had raised a grizzly bear cub into a proper grizzly bear and took the gendarme at level 5. After that stayed cleric to level 10, at levels 11 and 12, 12 now being the current level, took the Evangelist prestige class. I just got access to level 6 spells, so for min-max purposes won't be the best spell caster, but the versatility of this character is amazing, along with angel wings, and that sweet companion. Next level I'm taking a feat that boosts Honey... my lady grizzly bear's animal companion or mount level up 6 levels to make her even more effective. When we're doing something on the open ground and not in a city, or on a boat, or cramped area... oh yeah, got a lance which counts as a one-handed weapon, charging into battle, with her also attacking. I got her with animal tricks too and a wagon so she can carry a bunch of stuff and gear or personal like with the Leadership feat. It's been a lot of fun, my GM was the one that found the prestige class which has the ability that pretty much keeps the character a cleric while adding so many more features, skills... I love skills and doing stuff out of combat. All in all, this has become everything I've wanted in Pathfinder character. Nothing that is the best, but damn good at a lot of stuff with few weaknesses, I highly recommend others check out this build and play it, it's a blast.

It sounds like a lot of fun! I did something similar with bears once, we were doing a lot of mass combat that game so I ultimately just awakened them and let them become rangers to lead my lizardfolk, but the early “aww cute baby animal” bonus to diplomacy checks wasn’t bad haha. Evangelist is probably my favorite prestige class. I usually just dip for boons, but it holds its own and that’s saying something.

@anarcnamedjustin34516 жыл бұрын
And if you go elf, how much is the elven curved really worth? Doesn't a 2 hander get in the way of any spellcasting in combat that isn't touch while also deleting your ability to take bladebound? wouldn't a dervish dance scimitar (Which you can flavor as a slightly shorter elven curved sword cause the flavor is good) do you real well? Not to mention the seemingly amazing elf trait to give a bonus on casting defensively, which, defensive casting bassically rooted in the very core of Magus since he's a mage who's in melee while casting constantly
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
At lower levels, a Kensai's Canny Defense ability is really nice imo. You only add 1 point of INT to your AC per level, but if you have 20 INT that means a free +5 dodge bonus to your AC with no armor check penalty or anything. If I know my game is only running to 10 or so, I might make one of those later levels a monk level if my WIS or CHA are also competitive, I also love Iaijutsu! I really like to go first in combat (that probably comes from my competitive MTG days haha) and getting two ability scores into initiative can make that almost a sure thing, especially in higher point-buys. Superior Reflexes (though we gain that at 11) is also great for those looking to prestige into duelist or building reach magi, that's a lot of Attacks of Opportunity in a given round. I'll admit, I am pretty spoiled and have a group that regularly runs to 20th, so my videos are kinda skewed that direction, but Perfect Strike at lower levels might be all you need to drop a given BBEG, since they will surely have less HP then the Demon Lords and stuff. Probably less SR and resistances as well, which makes Shocking Grasp all the scarier
@BlackDragonGamingOfficial6 жыл бұрын
There's an FAQ for this, it used to be right on the magus page on d20pfsrd, but since then it has disappeared. You wouldn't be able to use Spell Combat, since that is expressly TWF and you need a hand free, but you can Spellstrike with a two-handed weapon in the same way a wizard can cast while holding a quarterstaff; it's a free action to let go of our blade with one hand, cast our spell, and then re-grasp as a free action to deliver the spell with our two-hander. Yes an Elven Curved Blade does not qualify for the Bladebound's weapon. This is why at the end of the day we go with a Katana instead, and it's mentioned here for those who may not want to go the Bladebound route (which I think is the better way to go at lower levels since it hurts our arcane pool so much). And yes, I agree that the Scimitar is a flavorful way to one hand an Elven Curved blade for those who want to have magus cake and eat it too haha

I never played with vital strike builds and it's mythic augment, but i messed around with mythic archmage path. For starters mythic maximize spell feat would make shocking grasp deal 90-180 dmg depending if you crit or not instead of 60-120. Then Arcane Metamastery taken 3 times would negate spell level increase from maximize spell metamagic feat. And Improved Critical (Mythic) would bump up your weapon of choice crit mutliplier by one as a sweet bonus. Oh, and here's mythic vital strike Prerequisite(s): Vital Strike. Benefit: Whenever you use Vital Strike, Improved Vital Strike, or Greater Vital Strike, multiply the Strength bonus, magic bonus, and other bonuses that would normally be multiplied on a critical hit by the number of weapon damage dice you roll for that feat. Extra damage from sources that wouldn’t normally be multiplied on a critical hit isn’t multiplied by this feat.
