Ian’s harmony vocals on the original studio version are simply beautiful, as are the lyrics.

One of Tull's greatest masterpieces, but for some strange reason many hardcore fans don't love it. Never understood that.

I have always loved it. To quiet perhaps for some fans. I think this was the song I first heard - my older brother, who knew I liked horses, playing this to open my mind to new music in the 70s. the album version is richer, deeper, but glad the message is still going

I love all them JT tunes, yes all.. I was just 17 when I first listened to those progressive bands withbtheir own distinctive sounds. Yes I love hard rock tunes too but progressive rocks open my eyes and ears wider to the horizon of music..

@TheJethroTullBoard I fully agree. I think this is one of THE benchmarks for all progressive rock. Perfect lyrics, and great performers. This version sounds a bit mechanical, but honestly, whoever had been around when this was original is slowing down a bit now as well :-) Ian Anderson and Martin Barre (and my apologies that I don't recall all original names) are rock history. They left a great legacy, and I hope there may be a chance to see them perform one more time!

This is the EPIC Tull song for me. I love, love, love, the early blusier stuff. It kicks ass. But this period of Tull is so perfect. The album is so excellent start to finish. The newer audio version by Steven Wilson really expands the sound - it works so freakin great on this song! Rock on!!🤘😎🤘

I am so glad to find this live version. This song is a difficult ensemble piece. The time signature jumps from 4/4/ to 2/4 with some 5/4 thrown in. It starts in Dm and moves to Gm as the verse starts, notice Ian playing an Em chord at a barred 3rd fret, The lyric is simply beautiful and simple, the writing a beautiful poem. Ian Anderson is a genius.
@tailsoluv3 жыл бұрын
I'm amazed that Ian Anderson can sing this and play the flute since he has COPD and having it myself I'm well aware of how much breath it takes to do anything like sing. It can be difficult even to speak a long sentence in one breath. I'm truly impressed that there are concert dates listed for JT in 2021.
@hatandbeardmedia59253 жыл бұрын
You can see how he's completely exhausted by the end of the song. It must be extremely difficult to realise that the thing that was your tool of expression for so long can no longer do what you need it to. In recent years he's even altered his flute style so he doesn't have to use so much air to play. He may not sound as well anymore, but you've got to admire the guts to put on such a great performance given his disability.

Lots of u folks are being too tough on Ian's vocals -- obviously he doesn't have the pipes he did in 78 when he was 31 years old (!) -- but his work in this piece is commendable considering he's, what, 60 or so here. Few if any of the classic rockers sound as good now as they did in that golden musical age -- and IA sound better, comparatively, than many of them. I appreciate he didn't have to disfigure the song, as so many others do, in order to perform it. A bit strained, sure. Still nice.
