Hi Pete, very interesting video mate and I liked that you left it 10 weeks to show how it held up over time👍 The Upol 1k was the first clearcoat I used as I started out using black enamel paint through a £10 spray gun but that was horrible stuff to spray so I changed to cellulose which was better then I got some 1K clear to put over the celly which worked quite well but as you mentioned it's harder to spray than 2k clear. One thing that did surprise me was the gloss level from the 1k was amazing, even the next day it was still as good as the 2k then in the 10 weeks later part it was as you said slightly better than the 2k it's just a shame that the 1k isn't very durable🤔 thanks Pete👍

Hi John, It was a surprised to me as well. It looked better than the 2k after the 10 weeks, I've used it before, so I know it holds up well for a 1k but never side by side like this. Hopefully, the video shows that if you're willing to put up with the shortfalls, then it is viable to use this stuff if people feel uncomfortable about the 2k stuff. Cheers, mate 👍

Informative video, thanks Pete I’ve been using U-POL 2085 1k clear for some time and I really like it. It does take a bit of getting used to, but as you’ve show it can produce great results. My projects are not automotive, so I don’t have to worry about fuel or oil spills and it’s good to be using something a bit less harmful

Hi Mike, and thank you. It's a good general purpose clear coat, but there was little on KZbin about it, so I thought it would be good to do a video, hopefully people can see the benefits and drawbacks, as you say, far safer for people to use, cheers 👍

Hi Rob, I'm sure you'll be fine, don't be afraid to put it on, but do try and do it in warmer weather or warm the work and clear up just before spraying. Compared to 2k, it's quite thin, so overdoing it when it cooler will cause runs, not the end of the world, but they can be avoided. I'd be interested to know how you get on, cheers 👍

Pete, if you're trying to save a buck on a paint job it's common practice over here to spray the undersides of hoods and trunks (I think you call them boots) with 1K and do the outside of the car with 2K clear. Here in Arizona 1K hasn't got a chance on a hood, roof or trunk with our high UV. In the UK with your terrible weather it should last for decades.
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 Жыл бұрын
Hi Sataman, You've heard about our weather then 🤣😂, over here this upol 1k is effectively more expensive than there 2k taking into account you get 50% more from a 2k kit. You're right about the terminologies. Your hood's are our bonnets, and your trunks are our boots. Cheers, buddy, hope alls well 👍

Hi Pete, I have been looking forward to watching this one! I have been intrigued by the 1K but never bought any due to the worry of the resilience of fuel and oil, I know now I no needed to worry about the oil aspect of the 1K. I’m really impressed that you done the experiment with the fuel and again I found it more resilient than I expected. Before you even said anything about you going slow I noticed that you went much slower than you normally would with the 2K I’m actually very impressed with the finish you got and I think I would like to have ago and 1K and see what finish I can achieve from it. I love that you do what I do before putting any material in the pot and that’s flushing the gun out with thinners, I do this every time before use and after I’ve finished cleaning the gun out which I know is a bit excessive but it makes me feel at ease that I have done a proper job and keeping them in the best condition possible. Thanks very much for this one Pete! Really enjoyed this video! Cheers.

Hi Steve, to be perfectly, honest, it surprised me, I hadn't used it for a few years, I'm still on the 5lt tin I bought to do some alarm boxes 6 years ago so don't get much practise with it. It's very thin straight out the tin, so definitely no thinners are needed here 🙂, I knew to get a really glossy finish I would need to really put it on hence the speed, the Meiji is a firey little gun so I wasn't expecting to go that slow but you obviously react to what your see unfold. Again, being honest, it looked better than the 2080 tank in purple after the 10 weeks, which really surprised me, I've seen other comparisons on KZbin and the finish they get was definitely lacking on the 1k version but not in this case, certainly worth having a tin around as it keeps for years, obviously doesn't go off in the pot so no time constraints etc Cheers Steve, thanks for watching mate 👍

Thanks for the research. I use the 2085 clearcoat daily in our mobile wheel repair business in NC, USA. It’s all you say it is, and it has a UV resistant additive in it too. Unfortunately here in the USA this product is no longer available except in aerosol, which is difficult to use. Is it still available in your country? I’m looking for alternatives now as I am running low.
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 2 ай бұрын
Hi mate, Yes, it's still available in the UK. The only difficulty you may find is shipping, as it is a flammable liquid, so CAA and FAA restrict its movement on aircraft

@peteshobbies5383 5 ай бұрын
Hi buddy, they are very much the same. Both can be polished if scratched. The biggest drawback with 1k is normally lower resistance to UV and solvents. It's also often said the 1k loses it gloss quickly, which isn't necessarily true

I would use a quality mask anyway. 1k or 2k. This stuff is bad. 1k clear. Yeah. There many uses. I did multiple bumpers and intereior parts with 1k. And even with normal rattle cans you can get a realy realy good finish. Yeah. 2k is stronger. More chemicle resistant. But there many cases where 1k is sufficiant. For example it can be used as intermediate layer between base collor and airbrush work.

Pretty work Sir, I was surprised by how slow you were moving, guessing that was the gun, even though the 1k is thinner. Was watching the material lay down, took a bit, but layed down well. If you used a full size gun, with a 1.2, would you have had an issue with runs?
@peteshobbies5383
@peteshobbies5383 Жыл бұрын
Hi Bryan, This little gun actually puts out a fair amount of material for its size. Obviously, I was looking for the flattest finish possible, so slowing down allows more material to hit the work. This allows the clear to flow out more and give a smother surface. This is where you can go wrong as over application can cause runs, saging, and possible solvent pop, the latter being less of a concern as the temperatures gets higher. It's perfectly possible to use a 1.2, 1.3 or 1.4 full size gun and not get runs, still with the fluid on full you could and would move faster, so the finish would be the same but take 40% less time

I think if you are going to the trouble of prepping and painting anything, you should use the most robust and best quality paint there is. 2K, for me, is a no brainer, especially for motorcycle tanks. Interesting comparison nonetheless. Thanks !

Hi Tony, Yes, I agree, It's was often a question people would ask me, so I thought, what better way of demonstrating it than this. I was really surprised at the gloss retention on the 1k tank, it was better after 2 months than the 2k one, they were treated the same, put output in the sun, never polished or anything else, just left as they come off the gun, cheers mate, thanks for watching 👍

The R160 uses more air. It's also not as good in the smaller tip sizes as it requires much more pressure , 0.5 is very small, so I would advise 0.6 ir 0.8, preferably, it will spray clear coats better

No, it is not just the gun. It's knowing the material you are spraying. It's knowing how much to apply to get a flat surface without sags or runs
