Set the "back focus" by potentially giving up that ideal "one o'clock" position you've got for those two lens control levers. 1). Zoom the lens in (telephoto) all the way, set the lens focus, then widen out all the way. 2). Re-focus using ONLY the M12 threads. Repeat that sequence until the M12 thread setting does not need to change any more to optimize focus at the wide angle lens limit. Some zoom range limit compromise may be necessary for the perfect M12 thread setting. Unless the lens has another way to spin it around, the lens levers may have to live in the position THEY happen to end up in. Next useless challenge would be (on a larger, slower aircraft), program a tiny Arduino to sequence the lights for text messages or other designs captured on long, still exposures taken from a ground based camera looking up into the dark sky. Use two camera to create 3-D images. Using GPS flight control and waypoints, a good camera image could show an entire paragraph of text! For extra sky credits, reverse the two by creating a super-long, ground-based line of LEDs and use a high speed, down looking camera that's recording from the aircraft. Rolling shutter effect may cause trouble with this last idea that's probably not going to fly. I'm too old and my reaction time is way too slow to fly an R/C like you do in your 7/18/2020 video, but I did add red/green 12v navigation lights and a Xenon strobe to my ultra-light (way back in the days before bright, multi-color LEDs and low-cost DC to DC regulators). My Eagle had a 38 foot wingspan and its snowmobile engine had plenty of juice to spare since the magneto had an extra winding intended to run a bright headlamp. Flying after sunset was both "unsafe" and illegal, but what a scaled-up temptation that would have been for me back then... Loved your "Nite E Flite UMX Ultrix DIY LED Strip Test" video! Take care, stay safe and HAVE FUN.

WOW! Thanks for such a detailed and useful reply! I guess the focus method you describe is how it's done in the factory. I had no idea (obviously)! Will try it out. The "Text in the air" idea is awesome! I have an Ardupilot project on the back burner that I could experiment with. Your Eagle aircraft sounds great, do you still fly? As for reactions I'm a fraud! The little guy has a 6 -axis gyro on board, anyone could fly it! I recently joined a local RC club and at 62 I'm the youngest member!! Will definitely keep having fun! Keep safe!

@@1nformatica Sold the Eagle back in the mid-1980's. Hey, you're still young! Great hobbies, and we have all the same tools. Good people share experience, but each gets their own HCQ and Zinc...

Good Day. Can you please tell, when you set lens to 20 or 22 mm what is the minimum focus distance? I just thinking if it is possible to get objects in focus at 18-22mm and distance around 25 cm? Thank you.
