Pistols rounds aren't ment to do critical damage, not to say good shot placement will do critical damage. Pistols and Pistol rounds in almost all cases just plug holes because of the difference in energy compared to a rifle round which are ment to do critical damage. Again im not saying a well placed dome or vital organ shot from a Pistol round won't stop someone, but there has been many cases of people getting shot with a Pistol round in the head and even heart and they still fought and lived. I haven't found any decent case of someone getting shot in the head or heart with a rifle round and survived.

The folks at Hornady came out and did a shoot with us using both types of ammo. The difference between the two, I was told, was the Critical Defense ammo was designed for use out of shorter barrel lengths, (i.e. snub-nose revolvers and the shorter barreled semi-auto pistols). The performance demonstrated in the ballistic gel here was nearly identical to what Hornady put on for us. Nicely done.

Please be aware the critical duty is designed for a barrel longer than 4 inches! You may get acceptable performance out of a shorter barrel, but it is not designed for or recommended out of a short barrel like many micro carry pistols.
@directorbeau2 жыл бұрын
@@Kross8761 a Glock 19 is barely over 4 inches, so you're saying the Duty would be better in that instance?
@Kross87612 жыл бұрын
@@directorbeau slightly better, it gets progressively better as the barrel length (and therefore velocity) increases. The jacket on critical duty is thicker than the critical defense, which helps it deform less when punching through barriers like auto glass, sheet metal, plywood, or drywall, but due to the thicker jacket it need more velocity to expand reliably so a longer barrel is vital. Theoretically it's possible for the rounds to expand perfectly even when fired from a short 3-inch barrel, but I'm not willing to risk my life on maybes and theory.

I've noticed with a lot of HP ammunition, you get less penetration when you have more velocity. So the G43 with the Critical Defense is right in line with that. The duty round is a tougher bullet, so it doesn't expand as well which is why it is good for barriers.
@TB-im1ci5 жыл бұрын
The reason the Critical Defense penetrated farther put of the 43 than the 17 is because it was specifically designed for short barreled guns where the bullet has less velocity and power than out of say a 5 inch barrel. So it is designed to open easier for the lower speed and power. When you shoot it out of a full size the bullet is traveling slightly faster and therefore has more force so it expands just a split second earlier. But you see what happens with the lighter, thinner non bonded jacket thru barriers. Those 2 shots show exactly how much science and time went into developing each of them for their specific task.

Critical defense is meant to easily expand after going through clothing or hitting something soft before hitting tissue. Critical duty is meant to expand after first going through something hard such as a window or drywall... Things law enforcement may find themselves shooting through. For home defense or most situations any of us might find ourselves in, critical defense is going to be the better choice. Neither is a wrong choice. But for those of us who like to know the difference between similar products, that's it. Defense for shooting at a target with nothing between you and it. Duty for shooting at a target that may or may not be behind something.

From my experience Critical Duty is going to penetrate more and expand less.. If a perp breaks in your home and u shoot them with Critical Duty, the bullet may be more likely to go through the perps body, through a wall and hit someone u don't intend.. However if u are trying to shoot someone through a wall or a door, Critical Duty is probably the better choice.. Also barrel length is a factor with all this.. Critical Defense is probably a better choice for a civilian, Critical Duty is probably a better choice for law enforcement.. Im no expert However, this is just information I gathered through testing and speaking with people who would know better than me

in every test you talk about the wound cavity, expansion and penetration, but there's 1 factor that very few ever mention and that is cavitation. watch the bullets hitting the gel in slow motion, stop the video when you see them impact and pay attention to how much the gel stretches. That's the temporary cavitation and it's the factor that causes the majority of stopping power. in fact you don't want as much penetration as the critical duty is giving you, yes it indicates a more powerful round, but if the bullet exits its target, that's energy that's going to waste and potentially endangering others. bullets that stop inside the target dumps all it's energy into said target and creates that massive cavitation wave, tearing flesh and more important, stopping the target
@MALICEM12 Жыл бұрын
Cavitation is important, but as it is called, it's a Temporary wound cavity. The elasticity of the flesh will close it back up with pistol rounds. Sure it's nice, but really that physics stuff doesn't start being really important until you start getting into rifle speeds. Rounds like the 5.56 work almost entirely off of cavitation. Whereas with 9mm, .40, and .45 they work mainly off of just putting big holes into targets. Thus why hollow points are way more important in pistol rounds than in rifles. A simple 5.56 fmj round will be devastating at optimal velocities and swapping it for a soft point doesn't increase its effect a crazy amount because it was never really about the diameter.
