1st buddhist council is held three months after the passing away of lord buddha due to the unsuitable words uttered by bhikku sumana,it is held under the leadership of ven. arahath mahakashapa and patronage of king ajasatta , 500 buddhist monks participate in it and 1st buddhist council is named as panchasatika buddhist council,it held through 7 months, near saptapani cave in bottom of the vebara pabbata in rajagha of india.

2nd dhamma council is held in valukarama temple in city of vishala in india after 100 years of passing away of buddha the reason which occurred with the second dhamma council is 10 unpermitable rules laid by vajji bhikkus , it is held throughot 8 months under the leadership of bhikku sabbakami and patronage of king kalashoka

3rd dhamma council is held after 236 years of passing away of buddha,under the leadership of bhikku mogali putta tissa, and patronage of king dharma ashoka in the ashokaram temple in palalup ( pataliputra ), it is held for 9 months and 1000 bhikkus participate for it and therefore it is known as sahasasika buddha council,
