Pineapple Express is a cutoff low that sits a few hundred miles off of the California coast and pumps tropical moisture from the region surrounding highway up into the west coast.

As Monica explained it is how the west coast gets its rainy season. It is much more catastrophic when you don't get Pineapple Expresses or other atmospheric rivers since then you don't get a decent rainy season which leads to drought and I don't have to tell you Californians how bad that can get.

A atmospheric river is nothing more than a cold front. Now they use terms such as atmospheric river, "bomb" cyclone, polar vortex and heat dome in order to scare the public and fool them into believing in climate change (formerly known as global warming).

Ca can't manage water. We always end up with threats of drought by politicians.

Southern California is a desert. By definition, there will always be the threat of drought, with or without politicians. A good rainy season will help prevent this, hence the atmospheric rivers are beneficial to your area. But they can bring in water too fast and this can lead to flooding. This is also typical of deserts. No rain for years and nothing but sand. Then a deluge and ponds form and fish appear as if from nowhere. Plants spring up and flower and cover the sand in beautiful colors. The fish spawn, the flowers go to seed and everything dies until the next deluge. In the case of the desert southwest, perhaps more reservoirs to trap the runoff and store it for dry spells would help California manage her water better?

Dry spells aren't an issue when it comes to municipal water needs, knowing that potable water usage by municipalities is pretty minimal in the scheme of things. Ca & the desert southwest just have the unfortunate luck by having the perfect climate to grow "soft" agriculture 24/7 365. No other place in N. America can do that. The Ag industry states that the growing districts of the Colorado alone, contribute to the food supply of over 700 million people worldwide. I haven't seen the data that would include CA's central valley, but the number must be over 1 billion people worldwide when included with the Colorado. Is that good luck or bad luck...I guess it depends how you look at it.

The media has become a joke. I'm here in the extreme northwest corner of California and it rains all the time here. I was born and raised here and have never seen the pineapple bombineeses or salmon falling from the skies, just rain, plain ol rain. Sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Seems like they have to hysterical everything anymore. Put your lifeboats away, it's just water.

I mean, there are terms for drought, like agricultural & hydrological drought, but we all-including media, just use the term drought-which can mean a number of things. If we're experiencing an increase in water vapour transpiration over regions of the Western US and Canada, this fluctuation in atmospheric water cycling should be exploited and added to existing as well as hopefully regional players developing more reservoirs. Do NOT let this water simply drain back into the ocean. The southwest needs more water as it grows.

Mead won't never fill no matter how much precipitation we see until usage in Ag irrigation is reduced. Unfortunately, there are too many mouths to feed on this planet to reduce usage.
