1st Grade class practicing rules and rapping "Doubles" (addition facts)

If you look at the calendar on her wall, the kids have only been in school for a few days. The focus is and should be classroom management and rules. That is the learning. Young children can't possibly learn unless they know the routines, classroom management is in place, and there are rules. Without those the classroom will be chaotic. All students were engaged and moving around. This is SO important for young children.

As a first grade teacher myself, I'm trying to get myself to like this and I just can't do it...I have a slight headache from all the shouting..only good thing is I like the singing of rules and the doubles song.

I'm all for tips and being open to different teaching styles. As someone who has taught, and even before teaching, when I had part time jobs at daycares, things like that etc., if you are teaching the grade you like and are comfortable with, that right there will make you successful, because the natural creative energy and knowing what to do will just flow out of you. My first job with kids before I got into teaching was a once a week volunteer assignment at a church, and I helped a nun watch a class of kids on Fridays. She taught me a lot about management, but as far as activities and engagement, it just came natural because I loved the age. I never needed any direction on what to bring in, what to put together, how to fill up time, what to talk about, etc. I just knew. Eventually a few mothers said how their kids would say 'I can't wait until Friday to see (me).........That's when I knew teaching was what I needed it pursue

This looks exhausting, for the teacher and the students. I remember my least favorite part of school was singing jingles for things we already knew. I liked jingles for things like the presidents or the states, but we followed the "Shirley Grammar" courses which are packed with pointless jingles for things that shouldn't be rote memorization like the parts of speech. There was even a jingle that was just a list of prepositions. It seemed pointless and wasted time and energy. I've always been a quiet person, and preferred quiet surroundings, and I'm getting a headache just watching this.

This is a private school. I know the Challenger Schools in my area are prided on teaching kids songs and other fun things that help them learn difficult concepts, etc. They focus on engaging students completely because it helps children learn; sometimes this sort of thing is the best way to engage children. It depends on the classroom as well though too. This also teaches them self-discipline and the doubles rap will help them remember how to add doubles when the do their homework, etc.

I totally agree....I am in school.now to become a teacher and just learned about allotted time, engagement and instructional time. so this totally goes with what I just learned.

Amazing energy and strategies. just think my neck will hurt so much after teaching the whole day... Is there a way to get this much student engagement while being less verbose?

Nice way to keep focus and involve not only just 'read' off rules. It involves all the child's senses. :)

With that amount of classroom management overhead, you can't hope for more than 30 minutes of learning in a day and just a few hours a week. I'm also disturbed by the condescension that permeates this approach. How can kids learn to be adults or any degree of autonomy or creativity in such an atmosphere? What's even scarier is that this seems to be posted as an examplar of good pedagogy.

@yuniquemusicschool its not being a parrot, i was dubious about the whole brain teaching methodology at first but having tried it in my classroom I am a convert. I work in one of the most deprived areas in the country, and the children I teach are very demanding both in terms of ability and behaviour. I have a whole range of abilities and behaviour in my class and whole brain teaching is a way to engage them all. If you ask the children they will tell you this method is fun and active.

Kids at this age, firts need to control their bodies, and agood way to do this is TPR, because followings instruction is another way to learn. To have this class you need to work previously a lot with your students and it is not easy. When you work sequences you give them certainty because they know what is next. They are learning and applying discipline intrinsically. I think that critical thinking and self -discipline are important but I am positive that they know what they are doing.
@sharonrinkiewicz3940 Жыл бұрын
Hats off to this teacher. The more you use your body while learning, the better you learn it. I admit though that I personally would not be able to do it to to this extent. It just doesn't match my personality. I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I still remember School House Rock. I learned the parts of speech through grammar rock. I used to listen to a group called Bay City Rollers. I learned how to spell Saturday by listening/singing the song Saturday Night. I learned multiplication tables by reciting them, hitting balloons back and forth to each other while counting by 5s. I never forgot them.

But did they really learn the doubles? It's exhausting to keep this up as a teacher. Whole Brain is good, but there should be more variety not everyone learns this way. What about the shy kids? I like it for the rules and that's about it, however, I feel like that took a lot of instructional time away. They could have been doing centers that helped them learn doubles in a differentiated way.

The kids seem to be robots puppets. The teacher doesn’t let them think. She orders them what to say. These kids are not learning how to be independent thinkers. What a waste of instructional time. Is the teacher drunk or on drugs? Every time she talks sounds to be inflated with some type of hallucinating gas.

That voice is horrendous. I couldn't finish the video because of this.
@TonyPearson54389 жыл бұрын
Librarygurl Yeah, she should quit teaching because of having a voice that she can't help. /sarcasm off
@Librarygurl9 жыл бұрын
***** I didn't suggest she quit teaching at all! Read my comment. She's working in an environment where voice is important. That was only my opinion. For what it matters, voice can be changed and altered, if one chooses to do so. Obviously, for her and her students, it might be a moot point. For me, it was irritating. It might be great for voice work (animated).
@TonyPearson54389 жыл бұрын
Librarygurl I was being snarky. If you work to change your voice, you'll likely go hoarse. Being vocally trained, changing your voice on purpose goes against the natural use of your vocal chords, which is why people who sing wrongly often lose their voice. Mariah Carey. At any rate, I doubt the kids care. I'm sure they become accustomed to her voice. Maybe my voice is irritating to some lol.
@Librarygurl9 жыл бұрын
***** I have also been vocally trained for stage work and when done properly, it will not harm your voice but help. Regardless, her kids seem to enjoy her.

come on, really? this isn't anythings short of robotic, brain programming. Why can't kids just learn like regular kids have for ages. It seems we have to bling up everything. Kids need fun learning, but also sometimes, you just have to learn self- dicipline. It is not always going to be fun and over the top. Too cutesy and cheesy, even for kids.
