A friend of mine was playing an arcane trickster, and he used this spell to pretend to be a different race all together, hired some thugs to attack prominent figure. Then he ended the spell, and beat up the thugs, saving the person, and becoming a "hero"

I agree that this would be way better as a ritual. i took it at first level with a tiefling, because there are probably a lot of situations where it would be good to not look like a demon, but I don't forsee preparing it often unless the situation specifically calls for that

If you use this and then Friends, could you essentially get rid of the consequences of the latter since they might be angry with who you look like, but not who you really are. If you made an appearance similar to someone else, you could possibly start a fight between them. Combined with Actor and Comprehend languages, you have a spy.

4:33 Giving a combat advantage from using the spell would easily become overpowered with the warlock being able to use it an infinite number of times per day with one of their invocations

an alternative combat use, besides giving advantage, would be to hide in a fog cloud where other enemies are and then emerge from the cloud disguised as one of the enemies. you could walk right up to the rest of their allies before they know the difference

My friend is doing an evil campaign and I am going to try to play as a Cambion who has had his wings either clipped or completely removed. I imagined using disguise self in order to appear as a helpless boy who had his eyes gouged out, so a healer would cast regenerate on me, thus restoring my wings. Of course, it is most likely not going to happen, but it would be cool nonetheless. Edit: Literally just found out about Alter Self... Maybe that would be a better fit since it wouldn't be illusion.

@4:10 You said you can make yourself look like a translucent ghost. An Echo Knight-Fighter on a bonus action can Manifest Echo, the echo looks like, "a magical translucent gray image of you". Can an Echo Knight-Fighter with the warlock feat (Eldritch Adept: Mask of Many Faces gives- you constant free Disguise Self), make himself look indistinguishable from his ECHO?

I have a Tiefling Celestial Warlock who had to use this via Mask of Many Faces almost constantly, as the world she was in was extremely racist towards Tieflings (as in they'll literally shove a spear into your bed while you're not there out of spite). She made it to level 4 and had taken the Actor feat, which I felt would've been a great pairing with Mask of Many Faces, but sadly schedule changes caused a clash and I had to depart the campaign. Her best use of the spell was to disguise herself as a High Elf noblewoman in order to learn who the team was fighting next in our upcoming coliseum match. I do have another character who uses the spell too, a Draconic Bloodline Sorceress, but she uses it just to hide her...more exotic features

You can literally look like the people you try to infiltrate, so you could just walk right in.

Quest: Eliminate Evil King Method: Disguise as the Queen in a battered, bruised and wounded condition. and tell the guards that King has been replaced by a shape shifter and taken away through a gate spell. While you have guards escort you to guild to order a grand quest to find the "missing" king (to maintain the deception), other guards will rush the king and kill him for you. All you then need is for your party to jump the two guards that are "escorting" you... and them maybe steal their armor for later use in the kingdom if you need it. I remember there being a spell you can cast to impersonate someone's voice but I can't find it, so after a minute of hearing the voice of the queen, be it though a public speech, or but listening to her through a castle window while transformed into a crow, so you can use that to finish the disguise since this does not require concentration. or if you want to assassinate the entire court and the King is throwing a party for the rich to keep them in favor, use this to infiltrate and then wreck havoc.

To be fair, if a Kingdom didn't spring enough money for a Court Mage who could see through a basic illusion they probably would have been dealt with sooner or later.

@@TDSFounder True, but the concept could still work in lesser situations, like maybe a corrupt mayor instead of an entire king, or maybe the chief of a tribe of barbarian orcs and half-orcs

The Warlock really shines with this, who can choose to pick up Mask of Many Faces as an eldritch invocation. This allows for unlimited casts of Disguise Self. This works well with Warlock's high charisma mod, and the Actor feat.

Haha I completely agree! On my Mask of Many faces video I went into a little more depth. Mask of Many Faces+Actor+Comprehend Language+Friends= one heck of a broken character!

@@ChancesSpellbook I'd argue that Eyes of the Rune Keeper is a better alternative to spending your warlock spell slots on Comprehend Language. It's a permanent effect, opposed to a duration of 1 hour. Comprehend Language does have an upper hand when it comes to deciphering audible language, but EotRK let's you read, regardless of distance (and touch).

@@Kalightortaio Fair point! I still feel like the ability to speak and understand, is far more useful than just being able to read. You can also cast Comprehend Language as a Ritual, so there's not really a huge consequence to using it!

@@ChancesSpellbook Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm only in my first D&D campaign, but Comprehend Languages doesn't let you speak the language? I understand the power in understanding it audibly, but the spell you're describing sounds like Tongues.

@@Kalightortaio It depends on your interpretation. The Comprehend Language spell specifies that you "understand" the spoken language. Where they could have very easily said "you hear the foreign language as though it was your own". It is that understanding combined with the Actor Feat that would lead to true mastery. Tongues is very similar, but its main purpose it to cast it onto others. Where as Comprehend Language can only be cast on self

As long as you have the spell slots for it you could keep casting it! Warlock can just keep casting it if they have mask of many faces so then you could keep it up all day.

Alter Self physically changes you, and lets you preform a lot of cool abilities. Disguise Self is just an illusion.

@@ChancesSpellbook my party did play a evil campagne and we reach lvl 20 , we did got the paragon feat and we did some kids and we rise a army of demon to destroy the world , after i did the rituel to becaume a leech ( evil npc), and the rest of the party is dead , now we play 20 year after those event with , we have a good party now , my gold is to killthe leech(my dad) ( my first pc) so we are back at lvl 1 inside the world that have been destroy but we start with the paragon feat
