How Does This Coronado CDX-65 Spinning Reel Function?
Years ago i purchased the Okuma Trios-65 Baitfeeder from Sports Authority. On the first day using it i hooked 2 hard fighting Eagle Nose Rays. That reel easily handled those Stingrays. So my friend Robert Nguyen asked me to do a review on the Coronado CDX-65 Baitfeeder. He said for some reason it's not as popular as the previous Trios line though it's incredibly improved since the Trios first appeared.
Robert was right! I looked at the stats & it's way above the Trios in almost every category. So i ordered one and it arrived today. I didn't have to study much as i'm getting used to using Okuma products. I decided to spool 65lb Eminent Braid by Soft Steel, stats say it should take 320yds. If any fish can strip out 3 football fields of line it deserves it's freedom. So i got my first from Robert at Jeff Robles Associates.
I'm thinking of going out to collect live Mangrove Crabs for my live bait. In terms of sheer power the Coronado 65 has a higher max drag rating then the Trios 65. I'll match it up w/a Cedros 11'/12' Surf Rod. I used to add a short top shot of monofilament by using a modified Albright Knot. But after a year i rarely had to cut the top shot down, only the fluorocarbon leader due to external abrasions. So i decided to go all braid & will run a slightly longer Soft Steel leader of Stretchable Fluorocarbon. That fluoro realy does stretch though not as much as mono. It's abrasion resistant (so far) and boast knot strengths of 17-30% stronger when tied compared to line strength.
Update:
I've used it on a 12' Longitude for spinners. The #65 braid did well for that 12' rod (also would work well on a 13'). Didn't catch anything that day, it started to storm so shot back to my car. If you want to use mono then i recommend the largest size reel for the 12'/13' rod as you can get more line on it. I feel a 10' rod would be better for the smaller sized spinner using 40/50lb braid or 20lb mono.

A few tips for you but you'll already noticed one of them. It's heavy for the size. Like purchasing a Penn counterpart. But it has to be due to the dual heavy gearing. I've used the original forerunner The Trios years ago. And i have several of the newer units. Also heavy. How does it feel? Good! Is it fun flipping the switch? Like a little boy having a great time! Is it easy to use? D'oh! Does it hold an INSANE amount of line? heheh:)

Hi so in comparison to the azores would you say this reel is the same quality? I love the azores but miss the bait feeder function so am interested in this reel

Hard to compare as this is a baitfeeder. But it was recommended to me by one of the leading fishing sales rep for the US during a product show 2yrs ago. Robert Nguyen was correct. Well built! I've requested the 80 model last month. I too love the Azores but i see myself really getting into the Coronados!

Thanks for the review... I'm looking at the size 80 on amazon... Wonder why it's less expensive than the size 65?

No idea. Depends if it's a different seller i guess. These reels are heavier then the norm because of the bait feeder gearings.

Hola Cris, me again, i have question. I want one of this for bouy fishing in ocean. But my question is could i use like normal spinning reel and you know casting lures too?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 2 жыл бұрын
Aloha Kike, You really don't need this for buoy fishing at sea. This was more for cat fishing where the fish took the bait and the secondary drag control gave the fish time to swallow the bait before setting the hook. Yes, a normal spinner would work. Plus the extra gearing in any baitfeeder reel adds to the weight. Also the internal gearing limits the max drag capabilities by a little, not much. I do use it at times for certain ocean species when using live bait, like crab. It gives the fish time to swallow the bait before setting the hook. Normally on a regular reel i'm forced to set the drag "light" if live baiting so the bait won't get "yanked" out of the fish's mouth before hook-set. But i do use these Coronados when ocean fishing. They have their place Kike. Good luck out there.

For kayaking in salt spray i wouldn't recommend this reel. The new Cedros Spinner or the Cavalla/Alijos conventionals defineatly.

I’m just not a big fan of okuma to be honest. I’ve owned the Coronado bait feeder for 2 years now and it’s alright but I never got a wow feeling out of it like my daiwa bg which is the same price. Okuma just doesn’t make as good of reels as daiwa I mean I know your getting sponsored by Okuma and all but you truly know daiwa makes better reels maybe not better rods but better reels.
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 4 жыл бұрын
I've had/used most of the more popular Daiwa/Shimano/Penn reels over the years. Ate cup-of-noodles & pbj's just to afford them. BG's for the price are good. I also used the Trios Baitfeeder years back, the forerunner to the Coronado. I'll never tell anyone to change their brand. Gotta use what you feel benefits your game. Recently the newer gear from Okuma is on a whole different level. From the new light-weight Cedros Composite Spinners introduced this year to the new 13'/14' Surf rods i've helped bring about coming out this summer. The new Makaira Spinners just came in w/optional power handles to the new light-weight med sized spinners this summer. Next year will be a shocker with what's coming out. Just get what you feel matches up to your game at a price that won't break your budget. I'm just explaining the gear for general applications in some of the most "raw" places on Earth. I'm just glad you took the time to visit my site to give me your honest opinion.

Scuba Chris thanks for replying I agree with you Okuma has definitely stepped up there game as far as variety goes they are making some good products to commentate all anglers. I definitely like the looks of their reels but some of their lower end reels are not so good. But for the new reels that are coming out I can’t really judge them because I’ve never used them. Well good talk I was not trying to be rude or anything I just wanted you to here my opinion about Okuma products because I’ve bought some of there reels and they didn’t really please me. Stay safe out their a lot of crazy things are happening, I live In San Diego and nobody is allowed to leave their house except for essential things.

BG is good. I was impressed with the smoothness of cranking, but it’s also a brick. Every reel, even made by same manufacturer, has to be looked at on a case by case basis. But that’s also why us fishermen tend to accumulate so many rods and reels: individual preference per fishing application. I even use the cheapo Piscifun spinning reels on occasion, when I know my reels are likely to get banged up on a pier or rocks. They work fine enough, and I’ve caught plenty of fish on ‘em, but I also won’t compare them to a Slammer or a Saltist. Even in same price range, all the reels have ever so slightly different features… You pick which ones will work better for you.
