the 1998 minting of $2 coins included some with a fatter rim on the bird side so much so that the tip of the beak and the tip of the feet dipped into the rim, they're exciting to get in change, must be worth more than 2 bucks.

Back in the day a lot of NZ and Aussie coins were interchangeable to a degree. I worked in retail and I'd consistently have Australian 5, 10, 20 and 50c pieces in my till along with NZ coins. The gold ones were less commonly confused since they were different sizes and opposite values (you crazy Aussies and your one dollar bigger than your two dollar) but they'd turn up every so often as well. Not now though after we made ours smaller and lighter.
