IXP will be my next Northstar. I have a Firebird in Blacklite/wood trim & a Hemlock Peregrine/ wood trim. One for streams and one for lakes. You made a smart purchase

Gorgeous boat! I have the NW Solo and love it. I totally get the anxiety of scratching a pretty boat and like you, my canoes get used and sometimes abused. That is why my last 3 canoes have been used, lol. I also have a NW 17’ currently in my garage for when I have others with me. You beat me out on the water this spring, I am jealous!

My solo is also a Northstar Phoenix. And I also got it from the same place. ;) But mine is in Blacklite. You and I might want to set a date to hit some flatwaters together. I have a double blade, but prefer to use my singles. ;) I have not been out yet this year though. Where were you at?

Just a side note... for folks who are coming from a more classic Prospector shape, the Phoenix "is" tippy. LOL If you are used to narrower canoes it's pretty nice though. I would not just hand my Phoenix over to someone who was not used to canoeing, they may very well get wet. It's all a matter of perspective. LOL I didn't get mine for tripping though. It's just a nice day out on the water canoe for me. They sure are stunning canoes. Cheers!

Absolutely a matter of perspective. And I am sure I will get wet. Just a matter of time. But, the Phoenix is noticeably more stable and planted than my trillium. I am sure the weight difference alone is a major factor in that. 21lbs vs 40lbs

@@ItsGoodintheWoods Indeed, the extra weight matters, and when you load it down it will be even more stable. As you know, it has a nice secondary anyways, but that can often be nullified by new canoers who panic before hitting it. LOL It's all a learning experience. As for weight in general, even at 40lbs they are light (Blacklite is even lighter). They are like sportscars.... and feel almost like a toy at times. Topping and moving them around is almost like they move themselves. I came from the old days of..... HEAVY. LOL I love the modern layups. But I have to disagree a bit on the beauty part.... she is as beautiful as Swift canoes, just "different". And as you probably know, you are going to get compliments every time you are out and folks see it. ;) They are... sexy.

I’m about to order a solo boat. I’m down to either the Phoenix or a Placid Rapidfire. Having a tough time making the decision.

The Phoenix will be a bit slower and higher volume. If you do some moving water paddling the phoenix is the better choice. If you do more lake tripping and portaging the rapidfire is the better choice. It is lighter and faster. However, if you do more lake than river, look into the Northstar Trillium. I wanted a rapidfire, but when I went to place my order the wait time was estimated at a year. That led me to the Trillium. And the trillium is an amazing canoe for lake travel. I absolutely love it. I hope this helps.

I'll be getting a new canoe this year. I have an old, old town Discovery 119. It handles well, but either it's getting heavier, or I'm getting older (I'm 63, so maybe...😂). The canoe I've been looking at is under 20 lbs. I just haven't been able to figure out how to order it, and keep forgetting to call. Doesn't matter right now. I'm under doctor's orders not to canoe for now. Weather is getting nice and I'm also not allowed to ride my horse. 😢

I hope your condition improves so you can get the go ahead to get out there. Under 20 lbs is a seriously light canoe! that is exciting! What make and model are you considering?

@@ItsGoodintheWoods thanks. The canoe I'm looking at is the woods canoe 12' from slipstream in NY. I consider it to be a kaynoe. It's open like a canoe and can take either a kayak or canoe seat. They have a smaller one, but don't recommend having the canoe seat. I can't kayak due to an injury from a car accident years ago, so I'll get the bigger one. By next month, I should be doing a lot better. I had heart surgery in February. I'm going to therapy twice a week, and my therapist both rides and kayaks. She doesn't have a horse trailer, but I do. So we plan on going out together.

That depends on the trip. Lake trips that involve portages, The trillium. Rivers, the Phoenix.
