You got thrown into the deep end my friend, so I'd like to suggest another Dream Theater song that will be a lot more accessible to a new listener like yourself. That song is As I Am.
@Pulsed1013 жыл бұрын
It's more of a medley than a song, I'm not sure why people recommend this. Train of Thought is the album that got me interested in DT so good choice with 'As I Am', My fav now is probably Images and Words or Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence but it's hard to pick a favorite, so many amazing albums. These recommendations are just silly imho.

This song is a part of a complex concept album. The whole track is a kind of a transition between the previous and the next track of the album. Taking it out of context and listening to only this, doesn't make much sense. I would definitely recommend listening to the whole album if you haven't already, it is a masterpiece. Thanks for the honest opinion, though.

6 string basses are pretty common now, especially in jazz. No one is going to be playing 4 string bass before long. A cop-out I think, Jaco Pastorius played a 4 string. The problem with the 6 string is that the sound and the tendency is to start sounding like and competing with the lead guitar. The bass is supposed to work with the drummer to hold down the bottom line. As Jaco showed, it can be done brilliantly and powerfully on 4 string.

The Frontman of Dream Theatre is James Labrie, a really great singer. I guess this one was played during his pause😉 I've heard him at Ayreon: The Day that The World Breaks Down, a project where he participates together with 10 other singers (some of which you've already seen) Highly recommended for it's great and introduces you to a LOT of good metal singers.

I can't figure out why anyone who is suggesting a DT song to someone who's never seen nor heard the band before would pick "Dance of Eternity" as their introductory offering. It's not even their best technical song, let alone a good intro. I would have gone with something more melodic like "Under a Glass Moon," "Take the Time" or the ol' standby, "Pull Me Under." Suggesting an instrumental wouldn't be the way I'd go, outright.
@jhawkkw873 жыл бұрын
I love the band, but I really hate when DT fans request reactors to listen to Dance of Eternity or Metropolis Pt1 for their first song. The songs are great songs, but they are among the least accessible to new listeners who aren't use to extremely proggy songs. It's a cliche, but Pull Me Under, As I Am, and/or Panic Attack are much better songs introductory songs for the band (all of which do feature vocals). After doing a couple of those assuming you're still interested, then graduate to some mildly proggy ones like Home, Breaking All Illusions, Learning to Live, In The Name of God, and The Glass Prison. Once those are under the belt, then graduate to the epics like A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany, and Illumination Theory.

Dream Theatre does indeed have a front man, this is just an instrumental. Fun fact in this performance Mike Mangini is behind the drum kit, but this was originally performed with Mike Portnoy as drummer. The song is a monster with over 100 time signature changes through the song. As a recomendation, "Metropolis Part 1", "Enemy Inside", but for a more conventional style of song writing definitly "As I am"

Lol. Don't be sorry. This music is very much like jazz. It took me years and years to reach a point in my life where I finally heard in jazz what jazz lovers had been talking about. Up until then, it just wasn't for me, I didn't get it. Now that I do hear it and love it, I also finally get the appeal of listening to other great musicians like Dream Theater, and Animals As Leaders, and Buckethead, etc. I would just encourage you to every so often, maybe every time you feel your musical tastes get stretched, that you go back and give this music another listen to just to see if anything has changed about the way you hear it. And if it never changes, that's okay. Not everything is for everyone.

That's a middle piece from a very conceptual album telling a very specific mystical story, and it's definitely one of their "non-song" structured songs, kinda a medley type composition. They vary from ballads to even more experimental. I think you would like "Train of Thought" 2003 album of theirs

I don't think this song should be listened to alone as it's from a concept album, except as a display of crazy stuff DT can pull. Listening to it alone is kinda like listening to a pre-chorus of a pop song alone. Maybe try Pull Me Under (don't go for the music video, there's sections missing to keep it short), that's their greatest hit. They even named their consept album _Greatest Hit (...And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)_

Well you certainly picked the right band. Still going now. Count of Tuscany, Octavarium, On The Backs of Angels, all worth a listen but frankly there are hours and hours of amazing music from this band. They are all elite musicians and whilst the vocalist is not thought of as the best live, he is brilliant on the studio versions. This song is a bit like a music theory and technical test but trust me they have some amazing melodic songs into which the solos are more integrated and which Have James LaBrie up front singing which I think you would probably prefer. Try ‘On the backs of Angels’ (Live from Luna Park) next. See what you think of that.

My "gateway drug" to Dream Theater was "Pull Me Under". It appears on the album "Images and Words" and also "Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs)" (it'd be the hit that they're referring to. I'm pretty sure that "Pull Me Under" was a lot of fans' introduction to the band as the original video appeared fairly regularly on MTV back in the day. Beyond that, I'd throw out "The Spirit Carries On"...the version that features Theresa Thomason. It's a pretty epic version of the song. And, because I'm trying to throw out songs that haven't already been recommended, "Panic Attack" is a bit manic. And, like others have stated, an instrumental probably wasn't the best way to get introduced to the band.
@petrilampela3 жыл бұрын
This track is actually like an overly complex instrumental version of the track "Metropolis pt 1" because it has so many elements from that original song. That's a track that I'd definitely recommend listening to next, it's the first song I heard from Dream Theater and it got me instantly hooked. I appreciate Dance of Eternity as a technical showcase but the original song is a much better composition.

If you want to understand a bit better what the hell is going on, I recommend you watch the video where Mike Portnoy (their former drummer) explains all the time signature changes that are in this song. This is a very complex and purposely chaotic song which is part of a concept album, meaning, it makes more sense within the context of the story they are telling in said album. Not all their songs are instrumental, most of them feature their vocalist, James Labrie, who I personally don't really like, specially live. In any case, they are all highly trained musicians (in the beginning they were all Berklee College of Music alumni) and their technique is exquisite. If this song is not to your taste, I highly suggest you don't give up on them or on the whole progressive metal genre and keep listening to more songs and bands. It will be worth it. I promise. ;)

OOOF! Starting your DT journey with The Dance of Eternity. OUCH! Who ever suggested this for you found the deepest pool they could find, tossed you in and made sure there wasn't any water in it. This piece of music is most likely the quintessential of prog. And as others have mentioned it is a bridge piece in a concept album. This piece, as a stand alone, I think is more for music nerds, math geeks and musicians. For me, I find DT music relaxing. This piece is SO far outside the box that the string anchoring you to your box was becoming to thin and you didn't want it to break (ya lost interest). Thanks for at least staying till the end. I believe I've seen one other reactor not even finish. If you do return to DT, not too many songs of theirs that are less than 5 mins. Most of their music pieces (and with lyrics) are between 7-13 mins. Maybe for SAG, watch reactions from musicians , vocal coaches, and composers that have done this piece. Thanks and have a good day!!!

Oh my lord. Dream Theater is from Long Island not Boston. Being from Long Island myself, I might have let that pass if it wasn't Boston you said they were from. LOL. The bassist and Guitarist went to H.S. together in Kings Park Long Island. When they went to Berkeley, they met the original drummer and namer of the group. He is from Long Beach Long Island. I know at least three of the group still live on Long Island. They are considered the number one prog band in the world. They have been around since I think 1988 and release a new album about every 2 years with another one due later this year. And around ten live dvds. Because their music is so complex, I can see this not being for everyone. But saying that, the more you listen to them the more you tend to like them. This song you picked is like 20 years old but this is a newer version of the original live performance and while representative of their musical talents, maybe not the best song to start with because there is no singing in it. Most of their songs, maybe 95% of the songs has a singer which you didn't see here. This by far is not one of my favorite songs by them either. My original favorite songs by them were "As I am" "In the Name of God and "Home" But they have so so many songs I like way better than this one.

I think that there are “gateway” songs to get into bands, songs that are listener-friendly but are representative of what the band does. Roundabout by Yes comes to mind immediately. Gates of Delirium shouldn’t be one’s introduction to Yes. Dance of Eternity shouldn’t have been your introduction to Dream Theater. If you’re willing to give DT another chance, try the album version of Pull Me Under, not the shortened music video version. It’s how most of us first became aware of DT. Enjoy.

The fact that this is always the first song suggested makes the average DT fan a total sadist....why is that I wonder? This song here is not a song, but an instrumental "interlude" that is part of an album which is written in acts and is at the same time also literally the second part of a song published in 1992. Sounds and references to that song are scattered throughout the album that this song is from. Listening to just this song is like only eating the flour of a cake, an especially courageous introduction. I don't know your channel well, but try the song "Breaking all Illusions" live in Boston.

Here's a link to a double whammie live, first "The Woven Web" and from 4min30sec onwards "CAFO" kzbin.info/www/bejne/eojJmGh4nb5_a6s

This was one of the absolute wrong songs to start with. It’s a mid album instrumental from a concept album. If you want to hear a more atomic song from this album, try “Home” from Metropolis Part 2. But really, you should probably start with “Pull Me Under” from their Images and Words album. With Dream Theater, like Nightwish, you should start with their more accessible stuff first. Another excellent starter song is “As I Am” from their Train of Thought album.

Not the best DM song for first reaction. I would recommend The shattered fortress or Illumination Theory from the same concert

Wrong song to start with Dream Theater, if you want to get into their style you should listen some easier stuff as Pull Me Under, Learning to Live, Scarred, Lines in the Sand, Panic Attack and after that try to other songs such as Metropolis Part I, Home, The Glass Prison and so on. And here's one tip, don't listen Octavarium until you get used to their style, although it is my favourite song, but it's very strange arranged and written song that really demands carefully listening with knowledge about Dream Theater's influences and their music. All in all, don't listen Ocatavarium 'til you ready for it.

So I notice you didn’t even do another song by dream theater. You don’t even know anything about music if you don’t appreciate this

Hmm youre an interesting type. I do the majority of my reactions based on what is suggested by You. I do plan on reacting to another DT song. Also, did i claim anywhere in the video that I am an expert in music? Did I say I didnt like this song? Nope. If you are going to attack me, atleast make sure u can back it up with facts rather than twisting my words. Thanks, bye

The Dance of Eternity is literally the WORST song to start off with when going down the Dream Theater rabbit hole, especially if you're a metal head or used to mainstream music. It's way too "proggy" for people who aren't accustomed to the time signature/melodic changes. For a more metal-oriented Dream Theater, two albums come to mind: Awake! and, especially, Train of Thought. I suggest you begin exploring by listening to the songs in ToT in order, starting with "As I Am". Talk about pedal to the metal!

Dude you're insane...what more could you want? No other band could play what they are doing...it's the most technical and difficult stuff any musician could play...if you lost interest it's cause you where not paying attention to how difficult and on point they have to be in order to play that stuff like they did...smh

Wow?! I can understand that you couldn't get into it to a certain extent, but holy crap?! Talk about COMPLETLEY missing the point! As a suggestion, perhaps you should do a bit of preliminary research on songs/bands that you intend on reacting to! No offense, but I did leave a thumbs down! Not because I expected you to feel the same way about this music as I do. But, because of your clear lack of interest in actually taking the time to, at the very least, understand why your viewers suggest what they do!
