Hi Mbmars01, thank you for the tip, I am subscribing to your channel this very minute. I appreciate your videos, especially that you take the time to write the "behind the scene" story to these railroad incidents; it really helps obsessive-compulsive railroad modelers (like yours truly) to replicate "real-life" conditions. Have a nice weekend, Ciao, L
@mbmars017 жыл бұрын
lancelot1953 Thank you! I'm glad you like it this way. Yeah, it's fun to simulate rail operations. I particularly like yard jobs, could watch them switching cars forever. I'm certainly not one of the "obsessive" modelers. Eventually, a model is a model and as much as one wants to make it as realistic as possible, it is still a model in the end. Not everything can be "to scale," but I like if one can achieve a certain level of perfection at last.

@mbmars018 жыл бұрын
OldSchool1500 Well, they have, but there is no yard near Elberton. Just today the same thing happened in Athens GA, where they actually have a small local engine. As expected it was not able to push the stalled train and they had to use power of a different train to pull the train over the hill. If no other train is around, they have to tie done on the main track and wait for another train to come and help.

I know the perspective is compressed by the telephoto lens but that is one tricky piece of ROW. Very undulating easy to stall as well as pull the train apart trying to balance the short relatively steep grades. If it had snowed in Georgia those good old boys probably had no sand and weren't used to running on the slick rail under undulating conditions. They were set up by the Mechomical Dept !

Nice catch! Why two engines moving so slowly? Afraid they will slide into the stalled train by the time it is seen? Why horn repeated at 8:00?
@mbmars018 жыл бұрын
Since there is a train in emergency in the same block, these engines have speed restrictions. I don't know the rule by heart, but they were certainly not permitted to go faster than 10mph.
@robertgift8 жыл бұрын
mbmars01 Thank you. I do not understand why they must move so slowly unless it is the possibility of being surprised with a train around the bend and unable to stop before hitting it.
@mbmars018 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a general rule which certainly has been implemented because, indeed, whenever there's a train in emergency you never know what to expect happening next. In this case it might look overcautious, but safety comes first.

why was 820/217 going so slow to make the hook up? How many of the five power unit that was hooked to Q616 was working after the hook up? will 820/217 try and make up the lost time or will it just travel at it assigned speed and be late? I didn't realize 802/217 was the lead power units for another train when they helped the stalled train. thanks for a very good video.
@mbmars017 жыл бұрын
If a train is in emergency, train or power movements in the same block are bound to speed restrictions. I don't remember the details anymore.
@jamesshanks26147 жыл бұрын
When a train stalls and other power is ordered in to assist he has presuming this is centralized traffic control a restricted signal leaving the passing siding he was sitting in. A restricted signal allows you to proceed ready to stop in one half the distance you can see looking out for anything that could be wrong not exceeding 15 mph. Now if the stalled train is 8 miles away that's roughly 35-40 minutes just to arrive at the train. I've done this many times in my career as an engineer and it's not something you rush. Now once he's tied onto the stalled train and gotten under way he still can't exceed restricted speed until he passes a signal showing a better signal indication then and only then can he proceed faster than 15 mph.

Cool. The frequencies are 160.290 MHz for the dispatcher channel and 161.100 MHz for the road channel. An ordinary scanner that covers the range 160-161 MHz assigned to railroads is sufficient. One doesn't need to be a HAM operator for this, as no-one other than railroad personnel is permitted to talk on these channels anyways.
