First broadcast: Oct 2014.
Episode 16/16 Dame Evelyn Glennie is one of the world's finest virtuoso percussionists. Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, she is the first musician to create and sustain the career of a solo percussionist, performing in over 50 countries, recording 30 solo albums and the winner of three prestigious Grammy awards.
As she approaches 50 she is now involving herself in what she describes as 'legacy' projects - 'ones that make a difference'. These vary from unique collaborations to her plans for a National Centre for Percussion, which will not only display her collection of over 2,000 percussion instruments but also be a space for performances, master classes and lectures.
The programme explores Evelyn's collection of instruments, follows her in rehearsal and reveals the story of how a country girl from Aberdeenshire became a global percussion superstar.

What an inspiration! Now I don't feel so bad about my instrument collection. I have significant hearing loss, but it is not profound and with hearing aids, I can still understand most of what people say when they speak. I found for playing music however, the hearing aids are an impediment. When playing, the hearing aids come out. I play mostly string instruments and I am not evenly remotely at the level of Evelyn Glennie's proficiency and accomplishment, but I share her passion for musical devises. My instruments are in every room of my house and garage. Each has its own character and memories. They, in some ways, are like my children. The one I love best is the one I'm playing. I am 16 years her senior, but she said so many things with which I completely identify. This documentary made my day!

She is so inspiring! As a composer, I would leap at the chance to collaborate! Thank heavens there are steel souls such as hers, able to sustain even something as supposedly limiting and career-ending as deafness, and overcome it spectacularly. What a talent!

Barefoot. That is what the best musicians, hearing or deaf should. You should feel the music and let it resonate through your soul. Through your entire body, like she says one big ear. Music strikes your emotions, should touch every part of you. What an amazing journey. Just amazing.

..."beautiful home"...?? for a person who feels sound as Evelyn does, I would think playing /producing sounds on an ancient rock ledge in kings canjon or palm valley, central australia, at night, looking up through a sliver of deep deep dark blue, a campfire and eighteen billion stars, she could take us all home again; place the tender part back in between our wings and heal us all... thank you evelyn xxx

she doesn't "strike" instruments .... in a metronomic type of approach ... every note she plays is part of a fluid dance .... the notes don't so much start and end as cascade. Beautiful. It makes music come alive in a whole new way. Rediscovery.

@@robertallen6710 Swearing is part of a language..nothing wrong with it. Poet Patti Smith uses it! The person above expressed his being inspired by her, enthusiasm and joy in his/her way and you are reprimanding him and putting him down...I find that very uncreative and I wonder how Evelyn would have reacted. My guess is with gratitude and not with a need to be moralistic and stifling.

I became convivially conversant with you as "Rococo Rick" after you did something droll by Daugherty with the Winston-Salem Symphony 15 yrs ago and it is great to find out what u do all day; I since put forth the idea to challenge The Washington Ballet with you transcribing Mendelssohn Op.54 "Variations serieuses" for Marimba to play in D.C. for their Choo-San Goh stage piano setting. Feel free to suggest the project to TRB. LYS, of course, wot, wot!
