The 2.3 Lima in those old rangers have the most low end torque out of any 4 cyl gas engine of its time , you’d be surprised how much they can tow , I had a buddy do a tow build on one and he was reading 155hp and 200 lbs torque at 1800 rpm / no turbo!!!! With a turbo these things push over 300 lbs torque at just 1800 rpm

Id still prefer a Dodge over a GMC/Chevy product though, my father has a GMC Yukon and a Chevy Suburban 2500, then my brother has a GMC Sierra 1500 and they are constantly braking down, I own a 1989 comanche(10 years older then my brothers truck, 13 years older then my fathers suburban) and within the last 50,000km I haven't had any problems with it. id still prefer Mopar over GM. And before my brother bought his Sierra he had a Dodge ram 2500 with a cummins and never had problems.

Nah they made a 2.3 turbo diesel motor in ford rangers. It was a mitsu diesel engine. They was very weak and if you turned them up at all it was nothing but problems. been there done that lol

Rangers have a powerful 2nd gear and are super light. A cummins is a diesel. Completely different type of power. Diesels are slow (1800rpm) where a gas engine (4500rpm) winds up a lot quicker. This race would've turned out the EXACT same if that cummins was pulling a weighted trailer.

The M50D-R1 (include HD) was used on every manual ranger. It has the most practical acceleration over distance, on all the 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 2.9, 3.0, 4.0 engines My experience has been that most cars can be beat by a ranger's launch, but the 3rd or 4th gear, depending on the engine, is where it loses its power curve

+Benjamin Ovre Right, neither vehicles are suited to street racing but the Dodge even more so. Diesel engines are generally designed to produce low end torque. A lima or duratec ranger use large 4s, also spec'd for a bit of torque, at least what's within reason given the engine displacement. Add a turbo and who knows whatever other modifications and you go from an economical ranger to something that is more of a street racer, more so than a stock cummins dodge.

A boosted 2.5 is nothing to really brag about , but I do have to say it is 100% better than stock. Getting up to highway speed on an uphill ramp is not easy, it with the turbo at least your not dragging your ass. Definitely thinking about doing it to mine.
