First broadcast: Aug 2015.
Stephen Smith meets Andy Warhol's friends and confidantes to get closer to the man behind the enigmatic public image, experiencing a day in the life of the pop art superstar.
Andy Warhol created some of the most instantly recognisable art of the 20th century. But perhaps his greatest work of art was himself - the cool, enigmatic pop art superstar. In this film, Stephen Smith sets out to discover the real Andy Warhol - in the hour-by-hour detail of his daily life.

Fascinating footage from an era when American art was in serious transition. I realize some people are fixated on Warhol. I think that is partly the innate American fascination with oddities and a precarious need to connect with celebrities. There were far more interesting artists in the 1960s who did not spend so much energy promoting themselves into cult figures. For a good insight into Warhol's preoccupation with fame, read his own words "The Andy Warhol Diaries." The superficiality is hard to miss.

I've never watched sleep fully, anyone could say it's boring... But how many of us find it beautiful to watch the ones we love sleeping? That is the art - the twitches, kicks and turns. Like he had said, the films are supposed to be very real, everything is left in. It's unpredictable, imperfect, innocent and sweet. I love Andy Warhol, his exhibit at the Whitney Museum was stunning - if you're a fan it's a must see.

Great artist. Movies sucked. He wanted to do multi-media before it was really possible. A shame he had no opportunity to do computer art.

Late reply, but he sort of did. When Commodore released the Amiga, Andy sort of promoted it and dabbled on it himself.

I don't think Andy Warhol was a "King"...in my view he was a disturbed odd man....He was iconic...yes. He brought a new genre to Art but some kind of God?...No way.....

as they said, he took speed, and im pretty sure he took ecstasy too, but don't forget he was also creating a caracter. SO this is probably why he looks so odd and disturbed

+Carmel -- Fifteen years ago (when I occasionally went to evening parties) I'd hear someone who wanted to sound hip ramble on about "Andy Warhol, the greatest artist in the world." If I asked that person "Do you know about any other artist? Did you ever study Art History?" the answer was always NO. Andy is the artist for superficial dilettantes.

Individually, each work isn't overall very impressive. You need to look at the so-many different types of art that he did over the years. He's done tons of differing things - year after year. You haven't seen probably 1/1000th of what he's done.

Wow, what was up with Andy Warhol where he had so many yes-men? I must have missed something about his personality. I always hated this artist as a hack, watched this to potentially change my mind, but it didn't happen. I like him even less now that I see he waited on like a prince for all of his life. I've been grinding for decades to make a living as an artist. To be born with a silver spoon is an amazing gift.
@charmerci

Warhol only was like you think he was AFTER he became famous in the mid-60's. He had a brutal, shitty life and constantly worked his ass off until the late 60's. You can read about it in several biographies.
@TIZNYC
@TIZNYC 2 жыл бұрын
Your studies have failed you and your assumptions are incorrect. He was born poor and was raised in a poor area of Pittsburgh. No silver spoon. Sorry if that hurts your false narrative. Maybe your art is just not worthy of more success than you’ve had.
