Wes thank you so much for making these two videos. My step-son has a 2007 Rav 4 with the 2.4 and your video gave me the confidence to give the re-ring a shot. I did not change the pistons due to budget constraints. We installed it this morning and it fired right up. No more smoke 👍

Just take your time and record it Juan. I mean relax and take your time and see the order of the bolts that hold it all together and with the video you record you can go back to review how you took it apart. Trust me I'm poor, (most likely because I'm honest...) At a garage sale for 25 dollars I bought an older Samsung digital video camera that is I guess 15 or so years old and it actually works quite well.

I would imagine, If a Toyota owner was confronted with the same issue and likely outside warranty range they had 2 options 5k motor replace or 3.5k repair. Either way that sum of monies would go further buying another vehicle. Up until recently, half that sum would get you a down payment on a newer model. That was an awesome job and thanks for taking the time and effort bringing us along. I realize that just recording takes 2.5 x longer to do the work.

I seem to often buy parts no one has ever bought. Most people would scrap a vehicle when it needs that much work. A used one would cost what a mechanic would charge. I often tell my wife "I can't afford to hire myself". This is a very truthful statement. Of course we live in a throwaway. society.

Yeah I suppose. I would think you could get this job done at an independent shop for around $2,500. In this area these vehicles are still worth at least $5,000. They are pretty desirable. But like you said, most people want new and shiny.

That was a fantastic presentation…..thank you! I have a 2007 Scion tC with the 2AZ-FE Engine, and it sucked oil badly at 147,000 miles. It flunked the dealership test of oil consumption and was fully repaired for free by Toyota. It now has 191,000 miles on it, runs like a top, and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. You’ve answered all my questions about exactly what Toyota did to fix the problem. My 15 year old Scion is still just a great, sporty little car that I truly love…..and hope to keep on the road forever. Your video has convinced me of what a superb little engine the 2AZ-FE really is, and now I look forward to rebuilding it myself if/when the need ever arises. I have done D.I.Y. rebuilds on lots of Chevy and Ford engines, but never on a modern, transverse mount Asian vehicle. You’ve lowered the intimidation factor while keeping kept the magnitude of the job very realistic. Thanks again. Dr. K.

I had my 2007 Camry Hybrid repaired by Toyota at about 85,000 miles. The dealership I worked with was very cooperative in performing the consumption test. When it failed they performed the repair no questions asked. Surprising behavior from a dealership.

Toyota has used that type of timing chain tentioner for many years. My old 1973 Corola Liftback engine (actualy it was origin Celica engine) had that type of tentioner. Also they have had the five main bearings als long as I remember. On the bottom line her in Denmark Toyota has been the most reliable brand I have had. All the other brands have been far more expensive in repairs and unreliable too. But by the time going I am out of the age where I pull engines out of my cars for repair ;-) Nice work you have done and you can't earn more than doing that by your self. Sir you are beyond an Excellent Mechanic! and video producer, And I'm qualified to asses This as I have been a" hands -on" mechanical /Electrical/ Design Engineer for 30+ plus years Now. I have the same Toyota as a back-up Car with 205,000 miles on it that consumes about 1/3 qt. of oil at it's 7000mile oil change which is kinda a little less than normal. But hears the difference:When purchased New, I gave it a break-in period of 6000 miles, and Put in Amsoil Oil & oil filter, also used their fuel additive Called " PI' Performance Improver . I have change the oil no longer than 7000 miles. I pulled off the valve cover last year to check for a valve ticking, Inside it was spotless with just a light brown stain. If you have never used their products, I highly Suggest you do. Regardless I see you as the finest mechanic on the Web.

Awesome. Bi hexagon and triple square sockets are both 12 point, and look similar, but the points have different geometries. The triple square has 90 deg corners, while the bi hexagon has 60 deg corners. This Toyota uses the bi hexagon which fits the head bolts better than triple square.

I'm glad to see new standard size pistons being installed. I hate seeing pistons with worn off performance coatings being reused. 25:55 With some cars, the underhood space is so cramped, you are better off pulling the engine out for much less complex repairs. I have read many car guys suggest that DIY-ers buy a Nissan 300ZXTT as a way of learning how to work in awkward situations.

Warranty pays around 14/15 hours depending on the model...it’s a good idea to check the balance shaft bearings as they seem to get damaged from constantly being run low on oil before the rod bearings...I’ve done about 20 of the repairs and all ran great afterwards..I never completed them much faster than the warranty time because it’s not worth it to rush them..

My wife's '07 Camry had that same engine. It burned oil, and qualified for the recall. The dealer performed an oil consumption test and deemed it not severe enough to replace the engine. Overall the engine was reliable. But at 190k, the plastic gear on the balance shaft assembly shredded. Thankfully, I was driving so I could shut the engine off before the oil pickup clogged. I did the repair with the engine in the car. But if I had to do it again, I'd pull it. There's almost no room to access the timing parts, and timing the balance shafts while trying to install them from below is almost impossible. While it's apart you may as well clean or replace the cam phaser. The old one was locked up solid on hers. PO apparently never changed the oil.

Recently noticed oil usage in my 2011 Camry, and could not figure out why. No signs of oil leaks/sludge as might be expected. It's about a quart every 3k, on a 2AR FE engine. You may no believe it, but, I'm just now being made aware of this design flaw...despite years of oil and filter changes at the Toyota dealership I purchased the vehicle new. Not one time was I ever told about this problem, or any official TSB. It's now got 147k on it, and I keep it pretty clean. It runs well. Do folks like me have any warranty recourse with Toyota? Is it common for owners to be kept in the dark about defects...and dealers not informing service customers either? Thanks for your channel, and this video. Very good work on a big job.

I did a 5KME way back when. Wrap around harness seems to be standard on Toyotas. Removed engine and trans from below on the subframe though. Had to do it twice because the machine shop installed dowel pins in the oil access holes. First time around had no oil pressure. There are no dowel pins on the 5KME block. Toyota with VVT is way easier to work on than Honda 2.4 with VVT. Honda sucks on that application. Two great videos. Wife owes you for that one. She could have ended up in a used Chevy. Too many horror stories there. Keep the knuckles safe.

VW engines (especially the 2.0 liter gasoline mostly found in Audis) have huge problems with oil consumption because of this exact problem. But they carried the problem much longer before actally working on a solution. Toyota make much less exciting cars, but also much less exciting concerning repair bills.

Lol I wouldn't call needing new pistons and rings a "much less exciting repair bill" my 2002 Camry has 190k miles and I change the oil every 4500 miles with either Valvoline Full Synthetic and now switching to Pennzoil Platinum FS for the lower NOACK % in a desperate attempt to solve the shitloads of oil being burned.. There’s a Toyota technician with a good KZbin channel and he said the problem was because the EPA made them use piston rings with less spring force against the cylinder wall to save gas through friction losses. That and oil changes with too many miles between them is what he put the high oil usage down to.

I have overhauled several R2200 toyota engines and was pleasantly surprised on the ease of working with these engines, and the life of these engines is excellent. I have one in a pickup in my driveway right now, and expect it to last the rest of my life, as I am 72, and it does not burn oil, gets excellent mileage as good as newer computerized injected engines, and does not use any oil between oil changes for the last ten years. I would not be afraid to run it coast to coast with nothing but an oil change. I have gotten 28 mpg at 70 mph so what better is needed in a pickup.

A great series... thanks! I was fortunate to have come in just under the cutoff criteria for the oil consumption repair on my wife's 2009 Camry. 40k miles later, and it is running like a swiss watch. I also switched to a synthetic blend oil following the first oil change after the fix. Zero oil loss between 3500 mile oil changes. However... and your video caught my attention for this reason also; not related to the fix, but about 10k miles ago, I started experiencing what I also thought to be a whirring whine from the belt tensioner pulley. I replaced the whole assembly, and the old bearing was a bit noisy. But the whirring noise remains. It is most noticeable when the engine is cold, and *almost* goes away when it's up to temp. Kind of sounds like a vacuum pump noise, not really a squeal. Any insight anyone? Thanks again. I have subscribed.
@WatchWesWork
@WatchWesWork 5 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say. You will notice that this engine still has a pronounced whining sound. It always been that way. The bad bearing in the tensioner would cause it to get slightly louder periodically. Typically, an intermittent changing pitch indicates a bad bearing. I think the transmission on these cars is also a source of the whining sound. The AC clutch could be a place to look.

Never seen one of these engines myself on this side of the pond. Although oil burning seems quite common in 3rd gen Toyota engines in the KR, SZ, NZ and ZZ variants. I've seen the insides of Toyota engines that have been burning oil for more than a hundred thousand miles and they are in a decent condition inside including the factory cross hatching on the cylinder walls. I wouldn't be surprised if that car doesn't make it to 300,000 miles with a bit of luck. If anythings going to get it, it will be rust.

Yeah the rust will eventually take over. But, I think that's a few years away. I've literally never had to fix anything on this car before. It has the original starter, alternator, muffler, wheel bearings, etc. I did replace the down stream O2 sensor once. That's it.

I was going to recommend trying GM’s TEC Top Engine Cleaner. But you’d of had to start the treatments when you first noticed the excessive oil consumption, and preferably you’d need to use the original version that you poured in the intake, not the aerosol version. Too many people were hydrolocking the engine by not following the procedure strictly so the pour in version was discontinued. It does with though and probably would have with your engine if used early enough.

Congratulations Wes! Nice work :) I'm sweating here hoping I don't actually need this video for reference purposes. My daughter's car started using oil suddenly a little while back and turns out it's one of these same engines in a 2009 Scion xB. I didn't even put two and two together until I saw Part 1. I'm thinking it can only go so long with putting oil in it because the catalytic converter will burn or foul up and then it won't pass California smog anymore. I'm not at all sure I have another engine rebuild in me at this point :) And I don't know what she'd drive while I was getting around to it either. So maybe it's just bad luck and the car dies a few years earlier than we expected. But sure good to know this video is out there in case I do end up doing it. Thanks a lot for posting :)

Did anyone say anything about cleaning the vvti filter while the engine was out? I enjoyed this video! Keep up the good work.

I've seen some (maybe 3) of those Scotty Kilmer videos and I laughed right out loud at the beginning where you wrote, "If you have suggestions that involve Seafoam or oven cleaner please check out Scotty Kilmer. This is the real world." Well, I thank you not only for the great and thorough work you do AND the things/methods I actually use because of you, but this morning it's for the laugh. Sure some'll say I'm makin a big deal of it but man I'll be honest: shit's been outright bad and tough up here in Alberta Canada and I sure needed a laugh, simple as that. You're a good man in a world full of outright quick'ndirty turds.

Runs and sounds awesome 👍 I bet you can get another 250,000 miles Out of that car. That’s if the rust doesn’t take hold. That road salt eats them up.
