15:46 that is extremely interesting. I've noticed when I am revving my engine out hard (I have Integrated Engineering Manifold and Stage 2) it occasionally feels EXACTLY like I am hitting a wall. No grinding, no sticky, just BONK. Only 2nd to 3rd. I had attributed this to the shift lever assembly needing some lubrication. I did that, and it helped (I think) but now I am going to look into lighter flywheels, thanks!

My BFI Engine mount snapped in half after 3yrs. Now I run BSH. I also removed my underdrive pulley due to electrical issues (If u have an audio system, do not use a lightweight or underdrive pulley). Lights would flicker when stopping and taking off slow (This would happen even while the system was off).

Good information in this! I skipped a bunch because it was either irrelevant, or I already knew similar info, but the vacuum pump leak and differential I learned about maybe an hour prior to watching this. So that was helpful. The body roll in these cars sucks, I’m hoping to do poly bushings soon. I think it would help some folks here that aren’t as well versed in this yet if you posted some links to parts sources. ECS, Urotuning, ShopDAP, etc. I do appreciate the time you took to make this video though. I think my next move will be the R8 coils, I’ve read good reviews lately of their reliability. Cheers from NJ!

Thank you for all the insight. Im slowly piecing my MKV together. Haven't done a build since 2005, when I had a MKIII Jetta VR6. I made the mistake of buying all the high priced upgrades for it. Looking back on it now, only because I wanted to sound like a BA. At the time, I was an 18 y.o. living off I-Drive and Westwood with too much $$$ and none of my VW mechanic homies to stop me. Which, sadly, turned into $13k in performance and body parts doing a barrel roll on a country road, in NW VA. So I want to do this correctly, this go round. This is a good POR. I have 170k on the engine. I want to replace all the gaskets and belts and do the suspension work first before adding power. Would you say that's a good route? Im currently using ECS adjustable coil overs. I have intentions on upgrading. But with all the different brands out there. Which are you using and what brands do you suggest. Ksport, Bilstein, FK, KW and Koni are ones i'm familiar with. Open to any suggestions you have. Ive also wondered about superchargers. Ive only seen 1 person post a video that has done it. But was more so showcasing the BFI motor mounts. Do you have any knowledge on supercharging the 2.5? or should I think about a engine swap to the 3.2 or 3.6 for that kind of upgrade? Thanks again for taking the time to make this video. look forward to hearing back.

'10 Golf Mark 6 owner here. Thanks for the super informative video! I Inherited my car from a coworker of mine who was a spirited driver while he owned it. Despite the rough and tumble, the car itself is an fantastic condition and the engine has not given me any cause for concern. At 130,000 I've only had to do a vacuum pump delete to account for the OEM part dumping oil, but everything else is holding up great. Will probably do a water pump soon to account for the relatively minor coolant weep. Any advice on best part to hold off on any future leaks?

Hey, i know this video is quite old at this point. But i just want to say, great video, and good coverage of topics. I drive an 09 rabbit (5 speed), and i had some of the issues listed. I only have mine slightly modified (stage 1 ie tune, exhaust, etc.), but love how it handles. I had no idea the 5 speeds had diff issues commonly. Mine blew a little while ago and cost me a transmission out of nowhere. Annoyingly there was only one in all of Canada and the US. Cost me $1500 😬, then the shop messed up and rolled the car out without axles, cost me new bearings... after all was said and done, bill came out to $2500. I love the car and how it sounds and drives, but man, i sure hope i dont have that issue again.
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 9 ай бұрын
It may take some time but to future-proof yourself, you can source a 6 speed from a 2006-2007 GTI (and other required parts like clutch/flywheel, axles, starter, clutch line, cable end links etc) the 6 speed not only is way stronger and doesn't break, it has better gearing and helps with acceleration.
@collywoodstudiosanimation3003
@collywoodstudiosanimation3003 9 ай бұрын
@Florida07K yeah, right now I don't necessarily have the funds for it unfortunately. I will say though, the gearing in the rabbit is different from the golfs/jettas. Top speed in each gear Is quite low, meaning it accelerates a lot faster than the golf/jetta. I shift into 5th gear around 60 kmh (sorry for not using cheeseburgers/bald eagle), and my friend with a golf shifts into 5th around 80 kmh. But even then, he is at like 1.3k rpm if he does that, mine is up at 1.6-1.7k. When I'm going down the highway at about ~75 mph, I am sitting up at 3.2k rpm, based on my calculations, I am getting 17 mpg 50/50 city and highway 🤣.
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 9 ай бұрын
@collywoodstudiosanimation3003 the biggest differences in the 5 speed to 6 speed is 3rd gear, and of course the lack of 6th gear. The 5th gear in the 5 speed is not good for highway MPGs unless you're going no more than 60 mph/97 kph. 6th gear on the interstate drops to around 2k rpm around 70 mph/113 kph. And the 3rd gear in the 6 speed is shorter than it is in the 5 speed trans, so if you are racing it and Rev out 2nd gear, shift into 3rd gear, the rpms won't drop near as much. The rpms stay in the power band. It's noticeably quicker.

I have a 2.5 2012 beetle. Any recommendations for and exhaust and probably an intake manifold with a tune? Worth it or just throw an exhaust?
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast Жыл бұрын
Well it depends if your Beetle has Hydraulic power steering or electric. If hydraulic, an upgraded intake manifold won't clear the PS pump. In that case you can just get a UM tune, Injen intake, look for a USP catless downpipe or one with the highflow cat in it. If you have electric, Integrated Engineering has a kit with upgraded intake manifold, intake, their tune and that's good for an increase to around 40-45 hp.

Yup. I pick my times to drive hard, all others I'm a slow driver. Rebuilt trans and 195k on a Mk4 r32. Never drive over 3000 rpm unless needed, I wait till shes up to temp. I stay poly free on everything it just doesn't last like a higher duro voidless rubber and nvh a street car a bit. I have all metal coolant flanges so that system is stronger and a skid plate for insurance. I still change my oil every 3 to 4k cause its inexpensive to do so, using VWs full synthetic and hoping the 3.2 will take me to 300k. I thought the 2.5 was turbo mate

Great video btw. Can’t tell you how thankful us owners are when you guys make information such as this available. Just a quick question. - I’m a second owner of a ‘14 JSW 2.5s 5 speed manual. Love the car. It’s a perfect daily. I don’t “plan” on modding the crap out of it. Just a few bolt ones to make it smile worthy on my commutes or weekend cruise or back road spirited driving. It currently has a Neuspeed c/a intake and soon BC Coils. I would like to do a cat back but am trying to avoid affecting any well working components while avoiding the dreaded DRONEEE!!! But would also like to bring a little music to the rear end as these 5cyl are known for. What’s your input. Thanks again. 🙏🏽
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 5 жыл бұрын
I would just do an AWE tuning touring edition catback. High quality, good look, good sound, no drone. When people start cutting out mufflers/resonators, and either straight piping it, or adding aftermarket mufflers but keeping the stock exhaust pipe in between, it causes alot of drone. In your case I would keep the stock header, downpipe/cat and resonator and just do a high quality catback. You'll be more than happy.

I have an 09 Rabbit and I deleted the front of the 2 rear mufflers and it seems a bit more responsive on the low end, but it could just be the ole' butt dyno. I don't want to lose power so is there a muffler setup that is cat-back and gets me some nice sound and a bit more power? Does the AWE tuning touring edition setup affect the power at low end/high end. Thanks for the great videos.

That's not correct. All intake manifolds that are aftermarket work with electric power steering Volkswagens. They are not compatible with the Volkswagens that have hydraulic power steering. All MKV rabbits from 2006 to 2009 are electric power steering. They did not convert to hydraulic power steering until the 2011 Jetta and the 2010 Golf.

Things here are so expensive last months and so hard to find skilled labor
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 3 жыл бұрын
The intake can be a little complicated. It depends if your car has a mass airflow sensor or MAP sensor only. The plastic connections for the block breather and SAI (if you have it) aren't universal connections or sizes. So if you make an intake, nothing will connect as normal. There are ways to swap the plastic hoses for normal rubber hoses so you can attach them to a custom intake but money wise it adds up.

Are you holding it full throttle on your compression test? 130 is really low, compared to a factory spec, thats equal to needing to be rebuilt. 5-7 psi is “low” on compression. 20 plus is shot. Throttle blade needs to be wide open in order to do a compression test
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 3 жыл бұрын
It was worn out for sure. But no. The VW throttle body is drive-by-wire and when cranking the engine, the plate is closed (open enough for idle speed) and the compression test is only going to see max pressure during compression strokes where the valves will be closed so the TB plate won't be relative.
@greatlakespowerstrokefx4

@@SubsurfacePodcast but the chambers wont be able to be filled with air with the restriction of the throttle blade. You arent getting an accurate result until the blade is wide open. Your engine is probably in alot getter shape than you think. 130psi is pretty respectable for only drawing through a closed blade. Same principle on which the engine works to start with, the throttle blade prevents the pressure of the atmosphere from filling the intake manifold. Thus is why your engine operates in vacuum, the engine demands more than the air it has available, creating vacuum. Anyway, nice car my bet is your engine is still pretty healthy.

If I wanted wider tires what do you suggest? I want more traction. What do you suggest for cold air or short ram intake? What do you suggest for a grounding kit? 07 Jetta 2.5
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 4 жыл бұрын
Well if you are still close to stock power i would just get 225/45/17 if you have 17" wheels. 225/40/18 if you have 18"s. If you have the 16" wheels you shouldn't really go past 215/55/16. But it depends on your wheels size, power, and your climate. Cause i like sticking with the recommended tire size that came with my wheels and just get good tires. I just got Firestone Firehawk indy 500s on my lightweight 17" OZ Ulttaleggeras and I love them. They were only like $96 per tire too. Unbeatable. I like cold air intakes by design but the 2 downsides are in takes longer to get to the filter when you want to clean it, and if you dont pay attention and get caught in a deep puddle you can potentially suck water into the motor. I never had that issue but some guys ended up driving through a deep intersection during a bad storm i guess. Short ram is nice cause they are right on top and easy to service the filter. Difference in power is so negligible its usually only 1-4 hp difference on a dyno. I like the Injen, and USP motorsport cold air intakes. For the short ram i like the Nuespeed P-flo. As for grounding kit, I never found one specific to the 2.5L or one that was universal that DIDNT have waaaay too much wire length lol. Its best to make one. Use thick gauge wire and quality ring connectors etc. Search on KZbin for the big 5 grounding kit. You should be able to find someone showing step by step on which components to ground, and how they did it.

Well if you want Rally handling you can actually get OEM springs from a VW Tiguan and swap them into your car and get a nice lift. From there I honestly would suggest (if you want to get serious) buy a used 6 speed from a MKV GTI, install an LSD from Wavetrac, while you're in there do OEM steel shift forks. Deutsche Auto Parts (ShopDAP.com) has them on their website. Then replace all the bushings in and around the shifter with delrin bushings from DieselGeek and install a short shifter from either DieselGeek or NLS (Nothing Leaves Stock) lastly for entry level power but vastly improved response, get a first gen Audi TTRS crank pulley with a new OEM 2.5L belt and tensioner, and get a tune from United Motorsports. @SubsurfacePodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Most gas stations already contain around 10% ethanol. And from what I've seen most tuning companies don't start tuning for ethanol content until 30% or more, So 20% ethanol may be a decent enough mix to allow more timing without overworking the ability of the factory fuel pump. I don't see why it would hurt a factory turbo car especially since our ecu's are very adaptable. But for anyone who's naturally aspirated the ethanol content honestly doesn't really make a difference. I know the ECU will detected and adjust but it's probably nothing that I would feel because I used E85, E10 and ethanol free and honestly they all pretty much felt the same. I swore to myself that when I put E85 in the tank of the Jetta which was N/A, that it felt like it had a bit more top-end but you never know. It could have just been in my head.

Different in many ways. It's stronger, (axles and gears) better gearing which is most noticeable in 3rd gear. Better acceleration. Doesn't have the same common differential failure as the 5 speed either. As for the gear oil servicing, the 6 speed is straight forward. Remove reverse light plug/socket (which is the best fill hole) remove lower drain bolt. Re-tighten bolt and fill with 2.5 bottles. The 5 speed is waaay more involed in order to change gear oil currently. It's still easy, but there are alot more steps. I'll make a video on it as soon as i can.

You should make a new video covering different stuff like a part 2 in 2021

I could. I'd have to compile more info. A video like that takes a while to prep for lol. This one could have been done much better.

Nice video bro! But i have a question, i have one Jetta too, and i need to change the spark plug, but my model is the 2007/150HP and have searchig on the internet and this model the spark plug is different between the Jetta 170HP versions. That is correct??

No they are all the same. Just early on they used Bosch spark plugs, and then they went to NGK. Just go to the parts store and get NGK plugs. Iridium or platinum last a long time, but costs like $60 for a set. But if you get NGK nickel, they perform better, but have to be changed like once a year.

@@SubsurfacePodcast nice! Here in Brazil those laser platinum cost a lot. And the iridium is the less expensive than laser platinum. Im going to search these NGK Nickel... Thanks!

Hey man I got my valve cover leak sorted with a new cover. I'm running a mini filter on the pcv outlet but have a vent to atmosphere catch can otw. My crank case hose is running to the intake before the TB along with with sai hose. Could I just run the one pcv hose to the the catch can with the filter on it and that's it?
@SubsurfacePodcast
@SubsurfacePodcast 3 жыл бұрын
Where is the connection on your intake manifold going? In original form the valve cover has a large hose that runs down, behind your throttle body and to the intake manifold. I'm against VTA cans as it's always ideal to have a recirculating system

@@SubsurfacePodcast I have an IE manifold. Crankcase hose and sai hose running into short ram before TB just like stock was. There are the port hole's on bottom of the IE intake. I plugged all but one for the vaccum line on the left side of factory intake.

@@adamtarnofsky3115 hmm. It's hard to say since there are small differences between MAF versions, MAP only, SAI vs non (CBTA) and I've had a catch can on both stock valve cover and IE billet while using a C2 intake manifold. Easy for me to get confused lol. I always just recommend running the valve cover to the catch can as well as the crankcase vent (block breather) and then recirculating them back to the intake pipe (where crankcase vent connects

Catch cans are more of preference. I think they are a good idea on all cars and in my opinion it's best to have a recirculating set up vs. Vent to atmosphere. But most PCV systems are not perfect (and some actually cause major problems) so a quality catch can is a great idea. Speaking of, there is someone who makes custom catch cans for our 2.5L specifically. Adam Strunk from NLS (Nothing Leaves Stock) makes them in stainless steel or titanium with mounting by the upper timing cover. They look sick and are baffled with easy drain. Look for him on Facebook and shoot him a message. For that they are, he prices them very well too.
