Hi Tanya! No, they can still be spent, but they may have lost most of their numismatic value (if they had any). In general, I'd recommend only cleaning coins if you cannot read the date on them

@Luke Milner. If it's not too beat up you got a $100 coin. If it's really beat to Hell, it ain't worth much to any buyers. Take it to a coin shop and ask what it's worth. If the dude offers you $20 ask for $35! Best bet is to keep it because you'll never find another! On a different note, about 6 years ago, I detected an 1870 Carson City-mint quarter then worth "only" $17,000 in F-12 shape. I sold it for $13,500 and used it for a $10,000 down payment on my $43,650 2017 Chevy Silverado 4X4, my first ever new vehicle since I started driving in 1973. In perfect shape, it's a $220,000 coin! Not bad for a quarter! Get a metal detector!

@Luke Miller If your house and neighboring houses are old like 1940's and older, spend at least $500 (or more) on a good US made metal detector and knock on doors for permission to metal detect. Learn to use it in your own yard and use nothing more than a long screw driver to dig. You wouldn't believe all the great coins I've found just in the 50 mile area of my home in southern Oregon! I have about 120 pounds of just "crappy coins" I've metal detected! I've detected around 500 silver dimes dating back to 1870, maybe 120 silver quarters, etc; etc. No gold coins...yet! You could put 3 nice BU wheat cents in the 3 blank slots! You could put the 3 regular lincoln cent backs on it, wheat, memorial, & shield. Or 3 popular wheat cents like the 1909 and the steel, then your choice. Well it's all your choice anyway!! Have a GREAT Day!!!

When you find coins that are really messed up how do you clean them?

You should carefully clean it with soapy water, or if as you say, it is super messed up... You can use Acetone. Make sure to use Pure Acetone too. You can find some at Walmart for cheap.

Actually , ketchup works well.. Immerse a penny in ketchup for 30 minutes, wipe most of the dirt will wipe off

Look up key dates. As well coppercoin errors. Get a good jewelers look look closely at them. A lot of amazing ones left out there and new discovery coins. Worth a lot. I found a new discovery 2019 cent amazing coin not another like it ever found in a b.u roll. I'm going to show it after it comes back very excited. But I'm sure you may have some good ones

That's really cool. Yes I would definitely get a book and a jeweler's loop and look at each coin. Because KZbin dont always have a video on each year or error. And there are really some coins out there that are worth some serious cash. As well you will find yourself enjoying looking. I use to watch a older friend of mine sit down and look through rolls of coins. After I seen that he was finding some good coins is what made me want to start. Good hobbie for all ages. I'm only 38 and it can be addictive I will let you know before you start looking through them. It's like a big treasure hunt lol. Good luck on your coins. You find any errors share them. But regardless the old ones are really neat as well. Another bit of advice try to study on grading your coins the best you can as in condition.

When I worked for Goodwill, we had a Penny come in from 1858. It was a trip. It had a harp on one side, and I don't remember what was on the other.. Not Lincoln because he hadn't even ran for President yet lol

I have actually sold a Canadian penny back to Canada. It was a 1942 with a lamination error on the edge. I have most of a roll left of a 1966 Canadian nickel with a die clash.
