On my 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan I removed the 4 rear seats and the flip up floors behind the front seat. That opened up all that recessed area where the seats are stored. That alone allowed me to stand erect, 5'11", while dressing in the van. It also allowed for much more storage areas. I made a raised bed platform for my wife and I to sleep. It was a little cramped for the two of us, but it was doable for our 2 week trip out west 2 years ago. We used a small tent to store some of our stuff for each night. That was a pain. I will say, this would have been a better fit for one person.

Thanks again for great honest share and video! As i had responded before, correction, I am on my 4th Caravan, and last 3 were / are V6, first one out was a 4 cylinder gutless wonder.. I have had Toyotas, Rav4 and Highlanders, and they are great, BUT as you point out, at a price premium. All the BEST to you and thanks again for your honest information and shares! Cheers!:)

I have two Honda Odysseys, and in the last few months I’ve rented a new Sienna Hybrid and a Chrysler Voyager. I love my Hondas, but the Chrysler was sweet with the stow and go 2nd row. Sienna…2nd row seats were in the way (couldn’t take them out because I had flown across the country to rent it), and the console between the front seats was massive and fixed.

Too many mechanics i asked vehemently advised against Dodge vans. I don't have the knowledge or patience to deal with having a van in the shop often so I decided on a Toyota. I looked for months and came across one that was a one owner, never in an accident and taken to the Toyota dealership every 3 months for oil changes and had all its scheduled maintenance done there. I was able to get a really good deal on it despite the inflated prices. My mechanic gave it a two thumbs up so I bought it. No regrets so far!

Are you going to make cheese or soap? You know goats can be a pain. Thank you for another great video. Your prices are pretty accurate. There are deals still out there, but you have to be patient and look at a lot of junk to find them. Yep our Dodge Grand Caravan had issues with interior features. We also had to rebuild the transmission at about 97,000 miles. It was still running well when we traded it at 150,000 miles. It was a late 1990s year model. Parts were a lot cheaper for the Dodge than any other brand vehicle we have owned. You also did not need special tools to work on them. Our current Toyota Sienna was a lease return and it was on the lot with the new 2020s in 2019, it is a 2017, so we got a really good deal on it, look, test drive and go home and wait for the dealer to call. Our mechanic sold our old one for $8,000, but he also did all the deferred maintenance and some light body work. It had 212,000 miles on it when we sold it. We purchased the 2006 at a used car lot that had 5 of them. Ours was the XLE Limited trim and needed tiers, a battery, radiator and springs so the rear stow and go seats would deploy. We spent almost $3,500 for it in 2017 with $1,500 for the tires, battery and radiator replacement, $5,000 Total. Maybe not a real good deal for 52,000 miles over 2 years, but we were not sure we would like traveling in the minivan. The 2006 Sienna was named "Blue Bear", and saved us way over the yearly cost to own, maintain, insure and drive it on our vacations and weekends. With out our current minivan we could not have seen the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Vermilion Cliffs, Glen Canyon, Red Rocks, Flagstaff, Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon and everywhere that was open last Fall. Meals would have been a problem with out our camp kitchen. Motels were not always available too. We are in no hurry to upgrade to a full sized van or small class C at this point. We love the ease of driving and parking the minivan. Maybe we will get something bigger after we have done all the Cites and urban places we have on our list or in 10 years when we will likely want a more self contained traveling style. Other than backpacking, the minivan camper is the least exspensive way to see this country. PS the minivan camper is way more comfortable than backpacking. Safe travels.

Had a Town and Country 07 had expected issues for something over 120k ac and heating, but I loved it. Unfortunately, I hit a deer three times, by the third deer it was totaled. Anyhow i now have a Nissan quest. It has extra room from stow and go even more than the Chrysler BUT the rounded edges of the roof make it seem so much smaller. Looking to buy a new van and thinking T&C again. It's more like 12k for those vans now....

I have a 98 Toyota Sienna minivan. It has 176 k miles and runs well. It has a non interferance engine, unlike newer models.This van is decent, but has one issue after another with the door handles and locks, including the one on the hatchback. If you get a Sienna, educate yourself through videos on how to work on these issues. Be sure to carry basic tools with you because you stand a great chance of needing to do door handle/lock repairs while out on the road. I've done so many that it no longer phases me.

That's a good point, and sorry you've had that aggravation. I have a Toyota Corolla from that same era, and unfortunately the cheap plastic handles (both inside and outside) breaking are common - as a matter of fact, I had one snap a week ago. I wasn't aware of it on the minivans, so that's good to know. Rest of the vehicle is great, though,. More soon....safe travels!

I was originally looking for a SUV but went with Toyota Sienna XLE because it offers All Wheel Drive (the only minivan with this option). Toyotas reputation was a secondary part of my decision. I paid more than I had planned on, but happy with the choice. I do wish 2nd row seats stowed like the 3rd row but they can be easily removed with a pull of a handle. Over all it has been a great vehicle and great camper van.

Wow, allan, that's impressive that you've had 6 of those so far. kaysandee, just build a false floor over the tracks. 1/2" plywood on 2x2 framework. I'm an older, verticality challenged female and if I can do it, you can too. Yes our 2006 was nice because the seat tracks were not noticeable, but our 2017 is way nicer. The tracks are not an issue with our current build. The bed is just behind the front seats. There are two of us though. Our kitchen is at the back hatch.

Spend more for the Sienna! I bought my 2000 Seinna in 2014 with 147000 miles. I've replaced 3 door handles and plastic parts breaking. As of 2018, I've made many cross-country trips, the last one 2 years ago 8700 mile trip with 260000 miles on it. It has never broken down on me. Other than regular maintenance I estimated I've spent on average about $290.00 per year in repair costs with the engine block and transmission remaining intact. It still runs great! It's really hard for me to part with it but at 274000 + miles, it's developing oil leaks, more plastic parts are breaking and there's window gasket seepage so I'll be replacing it with a newer one, 2009 or above is what my research is finding it to best and most reliable years.

Kevin, I'd agree the Sienna is a better choice if a person is able to run into one at a good price, and certainly worth paying a little more for. I am the last to be a mechanic, but I am in the market again. Before doing research, I bought a 2010 Ody last year. Thing was pristine on the inside & out. I loved that thing EXCEPT it gave me problems even before I got it home from the dealer! First time car buyer, a widow, they saw me coming. After having a Honda dealership run most of the codes that I would have to fix, I could’ve bought a new one. Learned my lesson. Traded for a 2020 Hatchback, that is now worth more than what I paid thanks to upside down market. I am determined to get the VanLife, so I am back looking, but doing my homework. The WORST year for the Ody was…you guessed it…2010! There were some other years prev. to the 2010 that had some issues, and some later models. But all manufacturers had bad & better years/generations. Do your homework, cause I really, really loved that van. And at 5’3”, to me it felt like a full size van. No cheap interior on the Odys, I know that. Still have more research to do, but I wish someone WOULD address the Odys for us.

Replace the tires, windshield wipers oil changes. The next issue we had in the last two winter's was starting the van in temperatures 20° or below if it wasn't in the garage. Last fall I replace the battery and clamps that connects the battery, thinking I wouldn't have any more problems starting the this weather if in freezing temperature. This past weather when the temperature dropped to 30° 29 degree sitting in the cold wind, getting off from work the car wouldn't start. Not even with a jump start. Now I knew it wasn't the battery it's was brand new. It was tow the next morning. It turns out the shop I took it to did some rewiring and that affect the fuel pump bypass wiring. Causing a poorly weak connection to the battery and cable. I'm no mechanic I think that's how you describe it. Cost me out of pocket 330.00 to get that repaired they took off 100.00. Had a coolant flush and replace trans. cooler lines hose replaced the cost 663.00. Wiring shorted to brake 2016 $206.00. Call my other receipts I have for regular routine maintenance. I'm sure not having many miles may have made a different. I read it worst on your car with low miles no highway miles. My husband had been I'll for some years now. He's pass on 5 yrs now. I've been waiting to go on road trip with a friend . I been watching the Utube channel getting some great ideas on road trips. I will definitely get my van checked over real well I'm sure there's a lot of things that needs to be checked, change or flush. By the way it has only 78, 727 miles on it. It's time it hit the road and get real dirty!😊 I was thinking about selling my van until

Greatfully, that 2013 van will do well for camper travel, especially with the mileage you have on it. sounds like you're taking care of all of the maint pretty well. Unfortunately, annoying things will happen from time to time with ALL of these newer vehicles. Hope you'll find some of the new vids I'm rolling out useful to you. Safe travels!

Video quality looks great. Did you get a new camera? I have a 2016 Kia Sedona purchased in 2019. It has broken down twice. One was an issue with the fuse box and the other was an issue with the throttle body actuator. Had to be towed both times. It sucks, yeah but I still love the vehicle.

I have a 2010 Chrysler town and country, how many miles can it go up to before it dies?
@BudgetTravelGuy
@BudgetTravelGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Lots of variables, Joy, but 220,000 miles is certainly common without major issues (although alternator, starter, water pump and possibly a fuel pump are likely to need to be replaced to get ANY vehicle past 150,000. More soon...safe travels!

Are foreign vehicles (Kia, Hyundai) to any more likely toi present a "problem" if you're travelling in small town America/Canada, finding a repair shop, or parts? Is Toyota "exotic" enough for those circumstance - I'm thinking not, this day and age, but I don't have experience (yet) in more remote travelling. Out of curiosity, do happen to know what a few minivans and cargo vans (including compact) that have the best ground clearance, before modifications? Thx :)

Linda Sue, I'm hoping to be able to get some comparisons on ground clearance soon. Personally, I'd stick with the American Brands for a van, or a Toyota or Honda. I'd avoid other brands as you ARE going to have more of an issue getting parts, and more of an issue finding a competent mechanic. (Meaning you're going to be paying them $80+ an hour to try to LEARN how to repair your vehicle.) More soon...safe travels!

Von Fields - hate your neighbor had issues with their vans, as a person can get a 'lemon' in any brand. Some years/generations just seem to have more issues (based on people I've met on the road) , which is what I try to steer people away from in these van brand videos. More soon...safe travels!

Vehicles that are 15-20 years old that had issues within their first few years after they were new more than likely had those problems fixed many years ago otherwise they still wouldn't still be running all these years later. Many of us oldsters remember when "made in Japan" meant it was junk, but no more. Now "made in America" is no guarantee of a quality product. Just like on Amazon there can be a product with a 4.7 rating but someone will write it is junk. With a vehicle so much depends on how it has been maintained and many early problems may well have been fixed years ago.

The new Toyotas are designed to make the middle seats impossible to remove. Not such a good feature for a minivan conversion. Removing seats is always the biggest barrier to a conversion. They stopped making the Grand Caravans and Town & Country cars completely.

Regarding prices, I hope you are correct, but I’m not sure they are going to come back down. I feel that now the prices are up they are going to stay up.

Guy has no facts about the motors in the dodge vans. No info other than the amount of cylinders has. Rather he is no near an expert. He’s giving silly opinions. Please be ware of this. This man is not mechanically inclined. But it’s up to you folks. This man is not who you need to trust on this info. Talk to someone more knowledgeable

There's only so much info that can packed into an eight minute video, Drew - it's meant to be a van brand overview. I stand by my opinion that some years (generations) of these are okay, and some are pure junk - which I HAVE seen in person with many, many people I've met on the road. Safe travels!
