Today I headed out with ‪@dannbangkok‬ and ‪@danny_and_diggy‬ on a food hunt in Bangkok's busy Chulalongkorn University area in the heart of Bangkok. This area is know for great value Thai food in general but Chula 50 Kitchen will be hard to beat!
Chula 50 Kitchen is famous for Pu Pong Kare - Stir fried crab in curry (70 baht) and after one bite it was easy to see why. Exceptional value for the price. We also had Kai Fon Pu - Scrambled eggs with crab (70/75 baht) and Pad Woon Sen Pril Pao Pu - Stir Fried Glass noodles with crab and chilli paste (70/75 baht).
Next up we headed to the famous Je Dang Somtum (original) for the best Som Tum Pu Plara -Papaya salad with crab and fermented fish sauce (60 baht) I've ever had. We also got Gai Tod - Fried chicken (50 baht) and their signature Kor Moo Yang - grilled pork neck (80 baht)

The pad woon sen did look delicious; not surprised that Dan gave it a 15 out of 10. As for anything with Pla ra I'm sold on using it in a lot of dishes.....don't need a lot, and it adds just the right note, in fact I use that more often than Red Boat or even Squid, since I think the fresh water fish has a more balanced flavor, and you don't need a lot. I haven't ever made som tum since my Peace Corps days, but I did do an Indonesian shrimp curry the other night and added the pla ra to the marinade for the raw shrimp (along with yellow curry paste and another brand of red curry paste, beer, lime, etc.). Was very impressed with your hookup with Adam of OTR the other day doing the Isaan street food at the tail end of the video; it refreshed my memory of being up in Surin province and sealing my love affair with Thai/Lao food and culture. Hope your tour gig is working well, but please don't stop the videos here on yt.

I have loved scrambled eggs with crab since I was a kid. This reminded me of the most delicate scrambled eggs ever. So cheap and so good. 10 out of 10. Absolutely delicious. A must try. Luckily I got there when a table was free just before 17:00 on a friday. Someone was even filming with many different dishes on their table. When I left, the sidewalk was crowded with people waiting. Thai tea and crab curry with rice 105 baht.

Another adventure you can do for us is to visit a University student Cafeteria. I was in Bangkok 3 years ago and my friend brought me to her daughter's university canteen, (Thammasat University, North campus). Great food, and so affordable!!!!

Next time you come around here don’t miss, see that vespa opposite Jay Dang that’s the legendary “ลุงฟรุต” “Uncle Fruit”the most famous fruits ready to eat seller the most delicious fruits in Thailand. I know it’s just fruits but the way they choose the best one from market, the way they prepare it.(even remove all the seed from watermelon) nice ice cold refreshing temperature. Even Thai princess used to get fruits from uncle. He ride his vespa around university and this area selling fruits for more than 50 years Sadly he passed away few years ago because of covid. That’s his wife, but I’m not sure they still selling?

They boiled the crab meat in advance because it preserves the meat longer in this heat. It is not ideal practice if you want a restaurant food but this is 2$ street food which is amazing that you get that quality for money.
