Adam really does have a select of familiar progressions that he really likes to include in his music. If you listen to his music in its entirety, you'll hear familiar cadences all throughout it. He has this habit of wanting to spice in his previous works into later works in a different medium and it's very bittersweet but somehow still unique in its own right.
@polibot1
@polibot1 4 жыл бұрын
I know right! If I may nerd out a bit... He uses the dorian and mixolydian modes a lot which aren't that common in mainstream music. Whenever he does music in the traditional major mode he often emphasizes the 6th note of the scale which gives it a more tasteful and slightly melancholic feel. I freakin' love it. That is all.

This is so true. I listen to music on Spotify shuffle or radio sometimes, and sometimes I'll think a song is particularly interesting or beautiful, and it will turn out to be Adam or one of his side projects. My ear is so attuned to those "familiar cadences" you speak of. I have listened to his discography in its entirety over the years. :) Your comment made me happy to know I'm not alone in noticing these small signatures of him within his music and across time.

Ah yes, this is very typical of musicians and composers to do. As a musician/composer, I too am guilty of "re-using" some of my favorite progressions and styles. But we like what we're familiar with and what we think sounds good :p I agree he makes it work, and he really has some lovely creations

We all love Adam Young and his projects for reasons that are so personal to us, that are his little signatures of music that appear in different ways throughout his many different songs and projects. However, I have noticed that whether the world and music industry realize it, or put a finger on it, Adam has directly created the world, music, and music industry into what it is today. I have noticed this on so many levels, I would like to share just a few of them. Of course, when Fireflies came out, it hit the nail on the head with a sound that the world was craving, but hadn't been able to hear yet. It was an electronic yet percussive synth arpeggio and synth "pluck". This is important, since it wasn't well defined before Fireflies. The synth arp you hear is not only a neat sounding synth arp, but it has a music box sound to it, with percussive sounds with each note. The percussive sounds doubled with the synth plucks have become ubiquitous -- but nothing existed like that before fireflies A vocal production technique was also introduced in Fireflies, which was the use of the "telephone effect" on the lead vocal over the entire length of the song. Before Adam used this (which is an EQ "bell curve", or simply using both a low pass and a high pass filter at the same time), is something that the industry pre-fireflies not only didn't use, but would have been appalled by even the idea of using. Before fireflies, vocals were produced to be dynamic with emphasized lows and highs. After fireflies, nearly every vocal produced in today's industry uses the telephone effect. That mixing technique has been used in Justin Bieber's vocals tracks in everything from Purpose on. The use of organic recordings to produce kicks, snares, hats and other percussive elements. Some of the biggest OC fans in the professional music production industry are are other EDM producers and DJ's. Not long after Adam Young showed the world how he layers random recordings to make unique beats -- this technique suddenly showed up everywhere. Most notably, the way Grey said they use the same technique. In a world of EDM, only the best sounding electronic samples were used. After Adam Young's influence, many EDM artists are producing with noises they recorded themselves. Adam showed his own percussive layering when he showed how to make sounds out of shaking a leather jacket, taking a bite out of an apple, hitting random things he found in his garage, etc. More recently, Adam released his Cinematic album. In this, he referenced a lot of his life, which included a lot of his "growing up" years. These themes were branded and expressed with retro pictures and vibes. Scenes from the late 80's and 90's were used a lot in Cinematic. And like nearly everything else, the music industry started doing the same thing not long after. All of a sudden, the music industry was flooded with "90's vibes" that did not exist before Cinematic With Cinematic, Adam released his 18-track album in "reels" of 3-4 songs every month or so. Then, many more artists started releasing their albums in chunks of 3-4 songs rather than entire albums -- that had certainly not been done before, at least at a mainstream or recognizable level Many of the music industries leaders have outright said their music started by trying to make music similar to Owl City when they first started. One example is LAUV, who made hits like, "I like Me Better" and "There's No Way" said Owl City was his direct inspiration when he first started making music on MySpace back in the late 2000's. One interesting sound he made as part of his Corduroy Road score was the use of an old upright felted piano, with a very intimate sounding sustain pedal. That is the piano you hear with the little fuzzy percussive noises layers with each note played on the piano. Again, he takes existing sounds (piano notes) and layers percussive elements with it. The felted piano, which was used beautifully in Corduroy Road is now ubiquitous and one of the most created and utilized VST / virtual instruments on the market In 2016 when Adam made his scores projects, he took events in history and explored them through music. This had been done before in a sense, but not in the style or way he had made it -- with each album and standalone exploration of these events through creative music. There have been several rebound musicians who have now produced instrumental albums focused on a single event in a storytelling way the same way Adam did with his scores.

We are all incredibly thankful for the uniqueness, calmness, and altogether experimental and creative endeavors that Adam Young has put into each of these pieces, and dozens, if not hundreds more, and his ability to capture our imaginations and give us new worlds to mentally explore through his music. However we must also thank the creator of this playlist! Hard work was also put into making a playlist that is not only beautiful in nature, but seems to really flow from one piece to another. Without dedicated people like Polibot, we wouldn't have such beautiful playlists so readily available. So thank you both for this power combo! Absolutely loved every second throughout, and I couldn't have done it without ya.

I adore Owl City's music so much, but haven't listened to all of his work. I loved his Ocean Eyes album, it has my top favorite songs ever. I had an epiphany that the instrumental parts in his songs alone are so beautiful, he must have created some instrumental only, ambient pieces. And sure enough, I found this post. You have definitely delivered. Thank you so much. And thanks to Adam Young for his gorgeous work.

A few years back, Adam released 8 or so score albums. Though there are no movies to go with his scores, each album is written as if it's the score for a movie about a historical event.
