Welcome to our series on using a MikroTik router! Through the series, we'll learn some exciting and sophisticated network configurations we can create with our affordable MikroTik router. But we've got to start with the basics: We'll begin by bridging our ISP's modem (cable Internet) and connecting to our MikroTik router (default 192.168.88.1) in the web browser. We'll change the IP address (to 10.0.0.1) and the DHCP pool to 10.0.0.100-10.0.0.254, establish Internet connectivity to our network and setup basic 2GHz and 5GHz WiFi connections. We'll also glance around the RouterOS WebFig interface quickly, and talk about the optional MikroTik configuration client, WinBox.

Use winbox to connect to router via MAC address. Much effective, you dont have to change any your previous settings...just plug and connect (i think router has to be clean without any default configuration [system/restet configuration/*check no default configuration-> reset configuration])

Great video! I am considering upgrading my six-year-old Watchguard XTM. I have looked at Draytek, Untangle, and PfSense boxes but the Microtik has caught my attention, especially the pricing. The terminologies used in the GUI are very similar to the Watchguard and it will make the transition a lot easier. I need to look into the VLAN and DMZ implementations in Microtik and then ready to jump in. Thank you for making a detailed video. Here's to many more such videos

Just started getting into MikroTik myself, and my favorite part of their business model is no need for licensing, and the consumer just has to essentially fill out a hardware feature checkbox. You need X ports with PoE, and a couple multigig SFPs? ok here's this one. You don't need PoE, but need a ridiculous amount of ports and throughput? Got just the thing. Webfig is the same every time; no need to relearn how to configure just because you found out your cameras need a 12v brick instead of inline power.
@ShinobiXRevived

Nice video. I'm no expert but, according to Mikrotik documentation, you're not supposed to use the Quick Set / WebFig / Terminal interchangeably. Their documentation says pick a mode and stick with that mode for all configurations. Now... there are some obvious implications to choosing to follow those instructions, but I'll leave that be.
@BattousaiHBr
@BattousaiHBr 3 жыл бұрын
you are correct. for people already somewhat familiar with networking, i'd recommend skipping quick set altogether, you will find that the full config page is very similar to linux, especially the firewall (as it is using the linux kernel and iptables).
@Absolute.Virtue
@Absolute.Virtue 2 жыл бұрын
So if I buy this and use the quick set that's good enough for a simple home network? Seems almost too easy, even when compared to routers from the normal brands.

It's seems to be a really good router. Here in France, our ISPs provide us a modem/router/wifi-router/SIP(for phone). We call this thing, "box". If we want the sip functionality we have to use this box. Here, we often have triple or quadruple play. Which means it's a package with illimited bandwith internet, phone and even TV options. It's difficult to avoid this "boxes" because TV and home phone. But for those they don't need all this package, it's very interesting alternative. Thank's for sharing ;-)

Some ISP-s in my location also provide router / box for TV + internet, but it is possible to get TV to work on mikrotik (TV network is on seperately tagged VLAN). My current ISP let me connect their fiber SFP module directly to my mikrotik SFP port so there is least clutter possible (no fiber media converter box / modem needed) and nice speeds. Best part is the router only cost 60€.

The low speedtest is most likely due to the hAP AC performance. Gigabit interface ports doesn't mean you'll get gigabit throughput from WAN to LAN. The CPU has to be able to handle it. Honestly I'd expect more because a speedtest is less performance intensive than real Internet traffic. But regardless, I still wouldn't recommend an hAP AC for gigabit WAN connection. RB4011 is a safe recommendation, it can achieve 1 Gbps in practically any circumstances. Also there is some software licensing limitations. But generally on MikroTik branded hardware they include the correct license that for most uses cases of that hardware will hit hardware limits far sooner than the software license limit. You can upgrade if needed. And the licensing is more of a custom built issue, because you can run RouterOS on your own hardware if you choose to. Been a while since you've done a MikroTik video, are there more to come?

Great Video! I have a question . What is the wifi signal strength like?
@LinuxTechShow
@LinuxTechShow 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's excellent. Not sure if you're looking for real stats like signal strength in dB and so-on, but in real-world use, it is substantially better than what is built in to the modem provided by our ISP. Not only is the signal strength fantastic, but the programmability of the device allows us to create an unlimited number of SSIDs (useful for guest access, device isolation, etc.). The other nice thing about MikroTik is that if the signal is poor in areas, it is very easy to add access points to extend the signal beyond the natural reach of the radio.

My house is 3 storeys (ground, 1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor) each floor is 750 sq feet. I have 2 questions: 1. What is the WiFi range coverage of this HAP AC2 device on 5Ghz? Is it small range? because i don't see any antenna on this device by mikrotik. 2. Very important to me is USB port, i want to attached a Hard Disk HDD 2TB on it. And my family will upload our Mobile photos and videos on it from our Android and iPhone. So that we can watch it on our Android TV. And directly download videos movies from our laptops to HDD on router. Is this possible on this device? I have Asus DSL-ac56u, i want to upgrade to Asus RT-ac68u with Merlin Firmware. But now this brand mikrotik looks like a better and cheaper option.

Robbie, do you find as a general rule that most ISP routers can be set up in bridge mode? I ask because I'd wanted to set up a DD-WRT router a while back, and I wasn't able to get the Arris wireless router provided by my ISP (Frontier Communications - terrible!!!!!) set up in bridge mode. Of course, Frontier would provide no help whatsoever, and for as much research as I was able to do, I couldn't find a way to do it. But, I'm just curious if bridge mode is a widely-applied feature available on most modems. I'd love to do this MikroTik project!!! Thanks!! ~Frank
@MladenMarinov
@MladenMarinov 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, With Mikrotik its pretty straight forward to create bridge for your network, The bridge Is often used to pass the multicast traffic for IPTV by providers. Below example set of commands is how to set bridge to your Mikrotik: /interface ethernet set [ find default-name=ether1 ] comment=WAN speed=Auto /interface bridge add igmp-snooping=yes name=bridge-multicast add arp=proxy-arp name=bridge1 priority=0x2000 /interface bridge port add bridge=bridge-multicast interface=ether1 add bridge=bridge-multicast interface=ether2 add bridge=bridge-multicast interface=ether3 In this case your WAN port is ether1 and you have two more ports - ether2 and ether3 bridged with your WAN. I hope this to be helpful.

Since you're using a MikroTik switch after the modem, there's no need to do VLAN tagging within the modem (you can do this in the MikroTik). I personally prefer my ISP modem to be "dumb" - just an Internet connection for my MikroTik to use. This (bridging) removes the ISP's ability to login to my modem (since the administration interface is disabled when bridged), and you'll want all your networking (including VLANs) to be done within RouterOS. Thanks for watching!

Here in Canada, gigabit Internet generally means it can spike up to that high. But you'd usually see between 100-250 Mb/sec in reality. The only time you'd generally see legitimate gigabit speeds (i.e., 1,000 Mb/s sustained) would be if you had dedicated fibre (which we do not).

In between some very helpful commentary, you insert asides that are not useful and which bog down your presentation. You digress where it is not needed or helpful. Example: did you really need to do a speed test after making us watch you fix a moment that should have been edited out of the video (not plugging in the cable correctly)? I have a suggestion. Map out what you want to show us and take us through it with screen actions ONLY and no commentary. None. Once you have that mapped out and have done a run through or two, then add back in your verbal commentary and please make it focused, on-point, and do not randomly digress. I don't care about your messy setup so why throw an aside about it in this training video? Your digressions make your videos very hard to watch. Hopefully, this will be read as being constructive. Thank you.
