"Two Months Behind Bars" - I binge-watched all 12 episodes last night ( 4 hours of videos ) and WOW what a story! You should consider turning your story into a book. *There needs to be a 'must watch' tab on KZbin - this story is a must watch for many reasons. So happy you are back home living near family. My takeaway from watching is how very blessed you are having so many friends, family and loved ones.

Your fortitude in the face of so much mental, physical, and emotional trauma is remarkable. You did an excellent job in retelling the saga in all these videos. Just the colostomy piece of the story alone is so heartbreaking. Much kudos to your parents, in-laws and friends for their support. I hope you consider getting counseling to talk through these traumas to prevent PTSD. I'm going to donate to your go fund me page in honor of all the good people who did help you and your husband through this long and awful experience.

Greg & Hannah!!! Friends for LIFE...I would never forget them and I hope you have already or will write them a beautiful letter of thanks and gratitude. I would have been so devastated leaving them there. Greg's role has been the part of the story that has touched me so much. For those who may not remember (& I hope I have this right), Greg had been Harrison's cellmate and during their stay in jail together, they became friends. But WHO KNEW what wonderful, loyal, dedicated and invaluable friends he and his wife (Hannah) would become once Greg was released. Instead of disappearing into the night and getting on with his life, Greg's loyalty and IMMEDIATE, UNSOLICITED DEDICATION to getting his new friend out of jail WAS INVALUABLE AND ONE OF A KIND. I swear, thinking of Greg makes me want to cry, it really does. Throughout it all and even in the very end, how he walked with Harrison to the deceased's mother and translated the final conversation....omg. It was an enormous act of humanity in a third world country. Blessings to all of you!! 19:40 I'm so crying right now....how you watched Harrison on the camera collecting his things with your mother-in-laws hands on your shoulders, still not knowing!!! How Brian and the neighbor who started the food train just happened to be driving by....Oh my Gosh! And, on a side note, sounds like that guy that you met in the police station who sent you the text was trying to get in a last minute extortion and as for Michelle going silent, don't know what to make of that at all. Just grateful that you are all at home where you belong....

I have held it together this whole series, until…you talk about turning the phone for your babies to see their dad. Oh man, the dam burst then. I cannot belief the strength you have. I went through my mom going into surgery for a colonoscopy and removing a length of intestine and coming out with a stoma and a future of ostomy bags. She was 71 and grateful to be alive but as the weeks went forward the frustration until we got the right combo was exhausting. I cannot imagine having the added layers of your experience. I pray you are getting everything worked out now that you are back in Canada and that you are all healing. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. 💝

I’m so happy you moved out as soon as your husband got out of jail! That was a smart move! In hind sight some people think living in another country is cheaper and a better way of life. It’s not. I’ve always felt this way and your story is evidence it’s not. Your family is very lucky it all worked out in the end! The emotional abuse you went through was terrible! You should write a book recoup from it financially!

This story has been unbelievable. It’s so crazy how to this day you still dont understand what finally took place to get him out. That’s so frightening. My question if you do a Q and A is: what are your takeaway lessons from this experience? What advice would you have for anyone else in a similar situation? How do you know who to trust amongst all these attorneys and foreign officials? Isn’t it odd that Michelle has not responded to you since you returned home? I don’t know what to make of that.

Yes it would make a moving movie or Netflix series. What would elevate it from a good to a great one is if the producers devoted resources to learning about the deceased man and his family, and presenting it as the multi-perspective tragedy it is. Understandably, the Nica family are mostly shadowy figures here. They’ve been made into villains by some commenters (not by Allison), but they have their story. Who was this guy? What was he up to that day? What were his and his family’s daily lives like? How did his death impact them, practically and emotionally? What were the family divisions (as no doubt there were many!) in how to handle the settlement? How did they come to their decision? who influenced them? what were they led to believe about Allison’s family? How did the mom feel when seeing Allison at her most frightened and vulnerable? How do they intend to use the settlement money and how will it or won’t it change their lives? How does the deceased family member’s memory linger in their lives? Plenty of pathos to make a thoughtful and three-dimensional narrative of two families, whose lives are so foreign to each other, forever changed through this terrible tragedy.

I'm in the US, not Canada, but this is the perfect example to teach others. So many whine about our judicial system, completely taking for granted the rights, regulations and checks and balances our system affords everyone. No way would any citizen be held without bail due to another drunk driver causing an accident, not provided food or bathing, while the person at fault's family was encouraged to extort the family of the incarcerated victim. What then happens to those victimized by their system who have no family to help? As an attorney, I can't even imagine the frustrations of the attorneys working in that system every single day.
@njmommy6093 ай бұрын
Our judicial system in America is still screwed and corrupt in so many ways, just diff ways and let’s not even get into what happens at our jails/prisons inside. No prisoner is treated like a human being period. It’s just extremely worse and more inhumane in foreign countries!!!!!
@sweethomealamanda3 ай бұрын
Neither can I! My daughter is a new attorney (graduated last May '23/passed Bar in Oct) and I'm very proud of the defense work she's doing at this time. This story is hard to hear, but it is certainly not unique as this is nothing new, unfortunately. I'm SO thankful for my freedom and I do Thank God that I was born here ...even though we do take it for granted, and I should do better with that. I'm glad they made it back home and I wish them well in the future. What a nightmare!
@liymaf3 ай бұрын
I hear you and agree the things that happened in the Nicaragua jail wouldn't be a thing here. However, 2 things can be true at once, America's justice system can be better than other countries but still need to improve immensely. It's still not where it could/should be. I've been burned by multiple judges here for things such as a protection order (with evidence that he deemed could've been faked due to it being messages over social media & text messages) and been told by another judge that his courtroom was not a court of equity and didn't allow my lawyer(public defender) to speak our side. It could have been worse but it definitely could have been better. I obviously agree that her husband's case, jail time, & all the things they had to deal with are horrific. I am so glad they got through it and wish they didn't have to go through everything they did. I'm not saying my experiences have been worse or even equal, just sharing a different perspective as to why someone could have a problem with the US judicial system. And my experiences aren't nearly as bad as others have experienced here.
@teynaranjas7883 ай бұрын
Listening to this nightmare has been heart-rending but I don’t think the teachable lessons as quite as you think. “No way would any citizen be held without bail due to another drunk driver causing an accident, not provided food or bathing, while the person at fault's family was encouraged to extort the family of the incarcerated victim.” First, both parties had blame in this all-around tragedy: the guy on the motorcycle might have been speeding etc., but the driver was making a left turn and failed to notice him. Second, as a US attorney I’m sure you know that hundreds of thousands languish in jail each year, pre-trial, for victimless (alleged) crimes, just because they can’t afford cash bail. That even if innocent they’re often forced to plead guilty to a lesser charge just to get out of jail, see their children, and if they’re lucky keep their job, housing, healthcare. That’s its own sort of built-in extortion that poorer people especially have to contend with. As for the lack of access to food: yes it sounds awful! Allison said that the jail did provide one meal a day and that family was expected to provide the rest. This sort of arrangement is pretty common in poorer countries where your extended family is, effectively, your social safety net. (The same thing takes place in hospitals: even in private clinics if you have surgery you’re expected to bring a family member to stay with you round the clock because attending medical staff won’t be available for most basic nursing needs.) This presumption is awful for people who don’t have family supports, but it’s a lot tinier percentage of the population than in a richer and more atomized country like the US. Jail sanitary conditions - again, sounds horrible! But I’m not sure how much of this is a rights issue versus poor-country issue. Nicaragua has make great inroads in recent years in access to sanitation, but many rural towns in the country, and parts of Managua, still don’t have access indoor plumbing. So I’m not sure where “get flush toilets and showers to prisoners” would rank on a financially strapped government’s list of infrastructure improvement priorities. We can all feel enormous empathy for what Allison's family went through without blaming a poor country for being a poor country.

And where the heck was the Canadian Consulates as you asked for help for being extorted thru the Nicaraguan legal system. Wow again all I can say is you and family are full of grace

If you lost a family member, would you like some type of compensation? Because this is a white person dealing with this situation in a 3rd world country, then, it is always the people of color's fault. How rich and typical of white people to victimize themselves! Allison is milking away with the story by uploading 12 videos and posting her "GoFundMe" link on all her videos. Isn't that greed?

To be honest, the deceased was not really a "victim". If he was indeed a victim of a crime, this would be a different story. Granted, this person passed away but he was intoxicated and apparently CAUSED the accident which makes the extortion that was allowed and even ENCOURAGED to happen by the deceased's family upon Harrison's family (no doubt because they were Canadians &, thus, it was all about squeezing $$$) all the more horrifying.

Didnt she say towards the beginning that the mother was fine with the very first (low) amount that was presented and it was the other family members that wanted more? For that reason i would say it was the sisters and other extended family that were the cruel and greedy vultures and not the mother. Your family member dies and all you can think about is how to cash in on his death? I could understand if he was the main breadwinner and had kids to support but she said he didnt have kids. Not saying they dont deserve some compensation for the accident but lets not forget the victim was drunk and operating a motor vehicle and could have easily been on the other side of this situation.

Thank you so much for sharing your family's story with us. I fell very blessed by it. I know that situations like can make people think about why this is happening to them. The challenges we go through help us to draw closer the The Great I Am. I am amazed by your strength. I hope you find healing spiritually, physically, and emotionally. I am praying for you. Lots of love and blessings! A couple questions: - Did you think that Harrison would have received a fair trial in Nicaragua, if you choose that path? -Did the police deem the accident Harrisons fault? And, did the fact that the other driver was drunk matter at all?

Heck this has been quite the journey for you! All that you went through, including health issues. I would certainly mention it to Netflix, you never know. Very interesting! I wish you and your family only the best as you move on to the next phase of your lives. When you reach my age you will have lots of stories to tell your grandchildren!

I thought for sure Harrison was going to walk in the room right at the part where he walked into the lobby of the police station. I've been hanging on every word. It's wild. Harrison is so lucky to have you as I'm sure you are lucky to have him. Really glad he ended up getting out and you are all safe now. I really hope that we get to hear from Harrison when he's ready. ❤❤

Woa - wild ride. I'm glad you're home with your husband and kids. I'm also happy to hear everyone is getting the mental health care they need. I'm curious about your health situation, and if you feel like sharing at a later date, that would be interesting. The incident that started this whole thing was a traumatic car accident where a man lost his life. Does that haunt your husband? Is it hard for him to drive now? Is there anyone you will stay in touch with from Nicaragua?

We think it’s charming to move to a country like Nicaragua until we encounter the judicial & health care systems. Let this be a warning. The freedoms we take for granted aren’t universally applied in other countries.

I'm glad you and your family are back safely where you belong. However I am a resident of Nicaragua as well as thousands of others. I think we would benefit knowing the amount that you actually paid the family and the amount that you think was the normal amount. One of us could have the same dilemma.

I used to be involved with letter writing for Amnesty International. I don't know how the cases are put on the list for people to be able to write letters on behalf of strangers to get them released, but do you know if they got involved or how to help get people on the list from small towns where they are imprisoned? I might research this on my own because I know you have family and healing. But this would be a great way to make awareness on crazy situations. My gut tells me that whoever lives in that town with the rumor that right after the accident happened that right after the accident they were part of the so called attorneys who didn't do mediation, and were just extorting. I lived in Honduras for 6 months and they were very careful with our travel, etc., at work. The education system is different for their titles. A doctor for animals (we worked with animals) only had 2 years of school and they got that title. Things may have changed now, but the internships and study were very different. Thanks so much for sharing your story. This needs to be a mini series or even a show. Gregg and he food train lady and Hannah and everyone just came to live for me. The medical aspect is very interesting and I could just seem them talking while pulling your arm too much or twisting it and not focusing at that moment and the camera pausing, and trying to cough with sutures, just a nightmare. The children talking and never getting to see their Dad so suddenly. The opening of the film will be either the dog with the skin issue pulling our hearts, then a scene to the drunk guy not realizing that he didn't actually start the motorcycle and just going faster and faster downhill with no lights as momentum carried him into the night. So much for each scene. Do lot let this story die and THANKS SO MUCH for recounting for us.
