Aaaaarrrggg! was my reaction two seconds into the video when I heard Walk This Way. I am 65, and started drum lessons 3 years ago. My teacher will remain unidentified, but he is a well known top50 rated drummer. He says that in his 45 years of teaching, I might be his most advanced student. With that said, my kick foot sucks. Like your demo, I can play the kick in Walk This Way with my foot only, but it falls apart with the other coordination. I have practiced fat backs and related exercises with very little and slow improvement. But, I won't give up on my practicing. Great vid.

Thanks for the lesson (again), and encouragement. Being a relatively new drummer I really appreciate your lessons.

"Bendy" house shoes rule ! ! As always, thanks Stephen for your your great insights and teaching skills. I love your videos and lessons. Even if it's not something specific to a current struggle I may be having (and I DO have many), I always learn something; some technique, some concept, or otherwise that is helpful. Keep 'em coming.

Do you have any comments or recommendations on pedal setup? How far back the beater should sit "at rest", spring tension, etc.? I gather it's a not too far not too close, and not too tight, not too loose thing? I've tended to ignore my bass drum pedal but as I've been looking to correct some bad foot habits, I'm trying out different settings. Thanks for your videos, they are really helpful!

Some of the music notes in the PDF guide I don't understand what it wants me to play or how. I've tried to Google drum notation, but there are several that still have no answer...

Do you belive in the "Side to Side" motion when playing multiple beats on the bass drum? I saw this on another video sometime ago and have been using it since. I would be interested in your opinion. Thanks

My 2 cents... I'm an efficiency - minded engineer. Some people waaayyyy better than me do that "swivel". Doesn't Jojo play that way? I mean, clearly it works. BUT... I don't see the point in the side motion, seems like wasted movement. Heel - toe, or the toe - heel slide, those make sense to efficiently produce a double stroke. So I have learned those techniques. But I'm way slower than Jojo.... 😁 😂 I suspect the side motion is a mind - body connection thing that helps with the groove and timing for some people.

@jeremyschneider9531 it's a groove thing for me like keeping time with the hats, but definitely appreciated the comment.

Hot Blooded by Foreigner is another one with quick kick drum (in the verses). Your coordination tutorial is great, although it's been more like 60 days for me. :)

Hello, I downloaded the guide and I have a question. So of I understand correctly, on any day that I want to work on this guide I have to play the given groove for 30 minutes straight? If yes then should I change the tempo or just settle on a comfortable one? Thank you in advance, and love your channel :)

I'm a beginner. I feel like my foot speed speed is decent but after only a few minutes of trying to play fast I completely fall apart. It's almost like I can't even get a slow double kick anymore. I'd imagine my muscles are just getting tired and it'll get better with time. If I step away from the kit for an hour or so I'm good for awhile again.

Me too. It's like my nerves overload and random impulses prevail.

Bass drum needs good shoes. I was using what I thought were good; soft slippers... I could feel the pedal... felt good, so I made them my drumming shoes... bad idea. Just a few weeks ago I played with my doc Martin shoes on... (not boots) good solid rubber soul... the pedal works so much better, almost effortless in comparison... try different shoes. Oh yeh and way back... all the way back, I toe half way down the pedal now. And with the heavy shoe kicks ass way back. House shoes made me play badly... my experience. Additional, you're a far better drummer than me, however I have 50years a muso... my micro experience... try it. A heavy rubber souled shoe... play wàaaay back on the bass pedal. Feel the power... I am heel up... you are heel down... I do sometimes play heel down. But the dou bles on the bd, just try it. Heavy shoe heel up doubles... I can even bounce triples... yep.

Haha, I'll have to try playing in my doc's then. I agree tho, I don't like playing in socks or whatever, I play in fairly heavy trainers or 'sneakers' as our American friends know them as. I can still feel the pedal but like you say it just works better for me, feels like less effort somehow. Plus I can really smash the shit outta my pedals when playing punk/rock and the weight of my shoes really helps there!
