I did some desert racing here in Arizona for year's. I used crf450s, CRF250s, and KX500s, and there was something about the KX500, more than just silly power. It was always magical. By far, my favorite desert bike. The stability and acceleration over 50 mph never ceased to amaze me. It was like a couch with rocket boosters, lol.
@TNTMOTO3 күн бұрын
@LordHolley I hear you. I am partial to the cr500 just because I have always liked honda. I like that scary power curve to get the adrenaline flowing. But for controllable power and much better ridabily that is on par with the cr500, the kx500 with its power valve is superior. I could ride my kx500 all day. The cr500 only in short bursts. The kx 500 was like riding a 4 stroke power curve with the pulling power of a cr500.

86 is fast enough for this old guy. stock gearing, speed it right on for factory specs
@LucasBoyden7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't need anything. Gearing is completely subjective. I'm sure the rider prefers shorter gearing.
@jnljnl84857 жыл бұрын
Having two sets of sprockets and chains is nice if you ride both open fast trails and tight woods. Even if you don't top out the taller set. Crusing dirt roads sucks spinning a ton of rpm and riding in the woods with stock or taller gearing smokes clutches.
@Bemaritohtori7 жыл бұрын
@Jnl Jnl Correct but this was surely to show the actual speed with stock gearings. And this bike is not made to be ridden in so high speeds in daily use so no need for too long gearings.

But in all reality We all know top speed is not what we want. Get up and go low end power is all I care for. Great video New subscriber here.

My CHP friend clocked us with his radar detector on a fire road in California City. My 2000 CR250 did 87mph (I had one tooth bigger on the countershaft sprocket). My Husaberg FE550E is a six speed with a speedometer and a Scotts Steering Stablizer, it's kinda of scary to look down to see how fast you are going on the small readout (KTM's have the same), but I clocked the Berg at 93mph - it had more if I wanted to press the issue. That's more than enough speed for me on dirt. A friend of mine had an 86' CR500 geared to the moon, he said his bike went in the low 100's. That's pretty insane.
@jessicahayden45225 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the re-gearing comment. My old 89 TRX250r would hit nearly 100. Engine was built by CT racing and gearing was different but still that 500 will def push 120. Need to get me one 😍

Back in the late 80's had a 87 KX500 ported, and milled head for all top end big carb just pulled super hard on top guy did the work he built some score racing bikes geared it for top end. Put street tires on it took it to the drag strip did 11.90 @ 121mph when I would get out of the throttle went into a speed wobble made a few adjustments to the suspension still did it 2nd pass was the last time almost threw me from the wobble. I have taken to some dry lake beds had it even faster never had the speed wobble on dirt just pavement. Being in SOCAL/AZ lots of open BLM land to ride on with dry lakes beds, sand dunes we made many trips to Glamis back in 80's and early 90's was lot of fun. Yes the older bikes were designed to sit on instead stand on. It was a way different riding style. Today you stand most of the time on big wide pegs. People comment all the time about the amount i sit on the bike when i am riding not knowing that was the way the are ergonomically designed. New bikes are not comfortable to sit on. Hard seats and high handle bars meant to stand.

It has the horse power for much higher top speed, the limiting factor here is the gearing. My Yamaha WR450 had top speed of 170km/h (more then 100 miles /h) with stock gearing but that has a 5 speed gearbox made for it to actually reach top speed. MX bikes are geared for riding on tracks where you never reach anything near those kind of speeds...

Just as I expected it is a bit faster top speed than the CR. I ran my CR to near (or possibly at) top speed on my road several times in the past couple weeks. My tires are kind of dry rotted and the right side axle adjuster backed out and gave up the jam nut so I'm not sure how often I'll be doing this. I want to get around to having someone record a flyby though. Plus I damaged my silencer trying to repack so I'm somewhat out of commission until I deal with it. I also want to find a way to test my 0-60 mph time and possibly my 1/4 mile in addition to top speed. How are you able to keep the front tire down? I lean forward on the tank as much as I can but my front tire wants to lift regardless. As much fun as this is it prevents me from achieving maximum acceleration I'm sure.
@TNTMOTO7 жыл бұрын
gravel road. tires just spins the gravel on the surface of the packed dirt. 0-60 going to be tough to keep the wheel down anywhere but loose gravel. top speed use rolling start 20 plus before you hit the throttle. Now my bikes jetting is probably off because it had a fmf fatty on it and i swapped over to a oem. With my fatty on it, it was nuts.

@TNTMOTO7 жыл бұрын
its all about transmission gearing,4/5/6 speed transmission, sprockets and horsepower. Most dirt bikes ranging from 80cc to 500cc are set up from the factory between 65-85mph. Then most people start by changing sprockets, then they change exhaust/jetting for more hp. Then its usually cc increase or head mods to get even more hp. Some of these newer 4 strokes with high compression ratios are getting 80hp after mods, which translates to alot of available power for sprocket adjustments. Biggest problem with 2 strokes is the power curve. Rear wheel just wants to spin rather than hook up.
@RT22-pb2pp3 жыл бұрын
Lower suspension add some clip on and street tires this bike will eat most any street bike in the canyons. Light fast and flickable. That is what a real sportbike should be. I would kill for that bike. Ninja and hayabusa would not catch it until 100 mph, and really how often do bikes have room for 100mph plus speeds on the street? Imagine stop light to stop light runs smoking all those 10 grand plus sport bikes and being able to run circles around them in the tight corners.

@MacBeanDS5 жыл бұрын
16/42 over stock gearing of 14/47 is equal to an increase of +/- 7.65 MPH in this bike as demo'd at top speed if gearing was changed to example, believe he could have reached 92 MPH no issue. Just doing the math, but would really come down to individual engine performance which has a lot of variance depending upon engine mods... race gas, total weight (rider + bike + unsprung weight drag factor)... etc. Without a doubt believe a highly modified factory desert racer could reach the mark of 116+.

Can the bike reach 130mph if we use 15 / 36t gears?

I don't know what exact gearing you would need but yes it has the power to do it.

Which is faster in a drag race the kx500 or the cr500? Thanks
@TNTMOTO4 жыл бұрын
Stock, depends on what year. Top speed I think all the kx were faster top speed. If you can keep the CR from spinning it is like a sling shot on the bottom end. Probably not the answer you were looking for.

The top speed of the kx500 isn't that great really,but it's how quickly it gets there that is the buzz and considering it's designed for jumps and bumps,they do alrite!!!

For posts below top speed was not trying to set a record just showing with the best stock 86 is top speed. Yes other bikes and hearing get it higher but if done who gets to 86 faster than 500cc 2 stroke?

If you switched the gearing to a 13 tooth front sprocket and 39 tooth rear sprocket you’ll be in the 120’s easily.

Bikes have come a long way in 30 years. This was the stock sprocket size from 1989. The bike has plenty of power to down the rear sprocket by 10 teeth and do well over 112 mph

You look like a pretty big guy. All my bikes have so much compression, I don't like to get a kick back. Had a bad one once. Knee hurt for days.
@aarontroutman82555 жыл бұрын
TNT MOTO honestly they shouldn’t kick back only when you get it on the compression stroke it might. Older four stokes kicked back when they started and u were still on the kicker. Two stroke shouldn’t kick back unless it misfires and backfires through the engine

TNT MOTO I’m not a big dude I’m short I’m only 5’9 my bikes were all rebuilt the engine was bored over the 480 I had to get off and kick it all of them I had to stand on something but they are much easier to start kicking them normal like you would or 250 or something give the throttle like three twists then kick sometimes need the choke

sorry but you kick my 500's out of close to top dead and they kick back almost every time. I dont have much for knees left as my job is walking 10k a day o steel grating and up and down stairs, so going tohave to do it my way.
