Great video. I've had mine for 140hrs now, but I'm going to change it at 150hrs. The cost for a new oil pump is €100

I test my oil pump the way Tokyo Offroad suggested. It's gone from 9.5ml delivery at 75 hours, down to 7.5ml at 100 hours and I'm now doing the piston and pump. Rather be safe than sorry. A mate left it until 150hours and had to have a complete rebuild, top and bottom end. The oil pump just delivered less and less until it was too late. He never really noticed it so there must be some point where it just got too weak to pump properly.

Great tip on capping off the oil tank. However KTM also recommends cleaning the oil screen at the same time so wouldn't you have to drain the tank no matter what?

I saw a litte dirt inside the oil cap. How can I clean whole oil line? And is it now recommended to change the oil pump?
@rmatvmc
@rmatvmc 3 жыл бұрын
There's an oil screen in the bottom of the oil tank, drain the oil, clean that off and see how much dirt is actually in there. I'm guessing there's not much in there and you'll probably be fine with just cleaning that. If there's a noticeable amount, make sure nothing got through, and if it did, then I would replace the pump and find out where the dirt is coming from like a damaged cap or tank. -Charles

Replacing the pump after only 80 hours does seem excessive when compared to the '70's mechanical oil pumps that never seem to wear out. But those were driven off of the crank where these have their own internal motor. The other difference is that the old pumps always injected at the same ratio where as the KTM pump varies from 100:1 down to 60:1 (I believe), those old systems couldn't do that. Can-Am in their early TNT and Qualifier models did throttle their injection pumps, not sure of the ratio but they could have something for KTM to learn.

70's Yamaha 2 stroke oil pumps were connected to the throttle cable. The amount of oil injected varied according to throttle position.
@suzuki06g
@suzuki06g Жыл бұрын
@@dirtbikeguy8254 yes, the pump was spun off the crank and the amount of oil delivered was based on the throttle position.

WTF Every 80 hours. I have owned back in the 70s several Suzuki TS- trail- street bikes that used oil pump injection. Never failed with over 20,000 miles on a couple of TS 185s. So sad that Co. now design stuff not to last. Pure greed, those bikes are over priced. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends.

I highly doubt you have to replace to oil pump every 80 hours lol. I mean come on you can get at-least 350 hrs out of a snowmobile oil pump.

Jeremy Stratton wtf does a top end every 80hrs as well? Most ktm 2ts i have ever seen have upwards of 300hrs on a motor rebuild each time. Given that most 2t ktm’s are woods bikes or enduro bikes not ran very hard in the rpms.

Did anyone experience a pump break down? And at what hours? I heard they should typically hold for much longer than 80 hours. Then spoke to me local dealer and mechanics and he really urged me to exchange it now. I'm at 110 h. He said he has seen plent of them break down before that... so I'll do it now. But still hesitant this thing can be so crappy...

My bike have 210 hours. Seems that previous owner didn't change it. Oil pump works fine. According to some test from Poland, it seems that the pump adds more oil as it wears out. Maybe thats the reason of my fouled spark plug. I will be changing the oil pump soon.

I hate tree huggers as much as the next dirt biker, but I have a husky 300tpi and it’s the best bike I’ve ever owned. 40mpg, 51hp, no mixing gas, no vibration, runs perfect no matter the elevation or temperature, electric start fires instantly. I put 100 hard hours on it so far and I’m just doing the top end and oil pump replacement even though it still runs perfect just to be safe. My old cr250 isn’t half the bike this husky(ktm) is.

Looking back four years later the TPI has ended up being an amazingly great design and it works super good. Most seizures have come from owners not warming bikes up correctly or not replacing things when they should. It's great to take your TPI to any elevation and not worry about jetting. Also, you can just put pump fuel in the tank and not mess with oil mixture. Yes has drawbacks, but over 12 million TPI bikes out there and 99% of them work flawlessly. We've taken our TPI's where no man has gone ever before, time and time again, and back with no issues. These bikes are a dream!!!!
