The great debate. 2 Stroke vs 4 Stroke. Which is better in the offroad category? We were able to get our hands on both 2019 Yamaha 250s and put them head to head to figure out which one was king of offroad, especially in the GNCC style conditions of South Carolina. See what editor Ron Lawson has to say about each bike and where they stand when put up against each other on the same style terrain.

Right its funny you mention that. My neighbors always said, "Aj don't start that shxt!🙅", when I bring out the four stroke. The moment I ride the two stroke which rips harder and louder in my opinion they,"😲😌🙌😏😚" as if I'm not even riding so I takes advantage and bang the power band especially 1st to 3rd still no yelling or"" Aj don't start that such!

It would depend on the kind of riding your doing. For day in and day out on the street, it would be hard to beat an old 250cc BMW I once had with it's 16 horsepower. Later years, I had a wonderful Suzuki TS 250R that I commuted with back and forth to my job as a mechanic and service manager at a Kawasaki/Suzuki shop in N.Y. It was as stone reliable as the old Beemer but had the attendant problems of a simpler machine and, even with the great experimental oils supplied by Union Carbide for several years, the emissions and smoking were going to work against it. Motorcycling has had exciting years with technical advancements but really, when the satisfaction quotient depends on constant quests for horsepower, the sport and industry are going into the territory of diminishing returns and I see it happening now. They are falling over their own "progress" and they have lost their way.

@@crunchytheclown9694 more expensive? I can run hundreds of hours on a rebuild on my yz450f. Two strokes need top ends frequently to keep them moving. And any machining is virtually the same and 2 strokes suck back more fuel. I would say that cost is not much different.
@crunchytheclown9694
@crunchytheclown9694 4 жыл бұрын
@@trevor866 as these motors evolve they have become more like each other in some ways, shorter life span and increased servicing in four strokes trying to achieve comparable power outputs, two stroke added complexity (power valve , fuel injection etc) The reality is both motors worked hard over a period of time the two stroke is still cheaper to maintain (set of ring and gaskets 60% of freshen ups ) and you still get the bonus of more power less weight. Each to their own happy riding
@trevor866
@trevor866 4 жыл бұрын
@@crunchytheclown9694 that's fair to say. I would agree that the two stroke is cheaper. But taking a good look into how technology has evolved in two strokes I'm not sure if the difference is enough to justify the love of two strokes over four strokes. Both are amazing bikes. I'm currently bring a 2008 yz450 back from the dead because the previous owner couldn't afford or couldn't be bothered to do the maintenance. I have about 1300 invested in the motor which in the grand scheme of things isn't too bad for a motor that was one or two rides away from being toast. I've seen comparable numbers with the modern two strokes. I sincerely hope that two and four strokes continue to improve. Both are awesome to ride.

It’s all a matter of the rider’s preference. For example, a few years ago I took a 2 stroke 125 into the 450 class at my local track and claimed first for the season. The following season I rode a 450 and took 5th. Season after that I rode my buddy’s CR250 and was back on top. The reason is because I’m a 2 stroke rider. I like to just wring the bike’s neck and toss it around like a mountain bike. Not to mention the nasty snarling sound a 2 stroke makes. The brap of a 4 stroke is cool but the snarl is just sublime

The yz250 simply is the perfect dirtbike, if you like carb and kickstart, there is nothing to improve. The ergonomics are perfect and the KYB SSS suspension is exactly the same as on 2024 Yamaha four strokes, i have ridden all sorts of ktms and i still prefer the yz250 because i prefer simplicity. If you can’t handle a kickstart and some vibration , you probably are too old to ride a dirtbike anyways. NO ONE who doesn't ride should jump on a 450 and just go , that's death on a stick mate !! So 2 or 4 strokes ROCK , but E.starters NOT SO MUCH !! RIDE ON !!

I still remember when my friend let me ride his new 2 stroke Suzuki RM80 and I was hooked. From that point I only bought 2 stroke because the power will put a smile on your face. My last bike was a 85 CR500 before I got married and so I have been out of dirt biking for many years now, so its hard for me to believe that a 450 4T could out run a 500 2T from what the Honda salesman told me. I think he's BS'ing me.

It might outrun the 2stroke but only on certain ground, cause the 4strokes are heavier on the ground and an even distribution in their power band. That holds only true for ground where you have bad traction like dirt. But else there would be no way, it is a day night difference between them. Thats why in many racing category's 2strokes compete against 4strokes with twice the amount of cubic.

used to have an YZ250 , '83 I believe, but afterwards, remembering serial number, I tend to believe, it was a factory machine.. it was sooo powerfull. A 500 couldn't get away, it was said to have 65HP. Had to sell it, due to place restriction ( parents) , wanted to make it a streetlegal. The next owner starved it, to get it less powerfull, yet didn't end well, not for rider, not for bike :(

Not hating on the four stroke, but if you ride really rough enduro type stuff the two stroke definitely is the way to go there, basically the only racing left where the two stroke still dominates the podiums is hard enduro.

JakeTheLittleSnake that’s because the are allowed to compete on equal footing, no bs rules to protect Japanese companies and the fact that the Euro off road brands are as up to date technology wise as they’re 4t counter parts, the Yamaha is held back on some ways being the only 250 2t that is a 5 Speed, the rest are 6 Speed, hydraulic clutch, e start, map switches TPI, adjustable power valves, Yamaha does good with what it is, but how many do you see in hard Enduro, a few but near almost all are European brands, also where 4t and 2 t complete together in Enduro GP which is not traditional as Enduro as it once was, 2t is also dominating. Juniors 125cc 2t - 2504t 2t 125s is leading and they have been dominating the 250fs, E1 - 250 Beta currently leader and won most rounds to date E2 the only class that is 4t only guess what a 4t leads that one. E3 250-2t - 300 2t up to 450 4t, dominated by 300 2t Beta again. Enduro GP overall lead by Beta 300 2t 4 class out of 5 lead by 2t in Enduro GP many special stages are basically Mx or GNCC style tracks mixed with Enduro courses to finish 2t is not dead that’s what MX wants you to believe on even footing and development it would be no contest.thats what they don’t want.

The ironic thing about the Calif and Honda how they pushed the 4t thing through on everyone with they’re fear and threats is that MX is the lure closed course competition it never had anything to worry about emission wise, yet the everyday weekend warrior where however many times more bikes are sold are used outside of a closed course is where the 2t has stayed the course proven itself time and time again, they’re were no politics and agendas that held back those sports why Hard Enduro emerged and is becoming the biggest baddest off road segment of all, it reaches everyone connects to everyone, MX and esspecially SX as become an elitist sport like all others sports dominated by politics and money esp TV coverage. The numbers get less each year u it’s sold, eventually Honda Suzuki will cry we don’t sell enough bikes to worry about MX, like they did with the 500 class, that’s the lie they will tell again, to justify their position. Unfortunately people will buy into that crap.

With some reluctance I agree. I began riding enduros on Bultaco Matadors in the mid '60s and went on to medal in the Berkshire Intl. trials on OSSA and a Suzuki. The terrain was so incredibly demanding in most places and having to get off and pull a bike out of some muck or negotiating the side of a steep hill going across it diagonally, it would have been a huge chore with a 4t, especially if an engine is prone to stalling. The 2 strokes didn't and that was such a big key to them being a joy to ride though there were some Triumph 500 twins getting on well in the larger class. The entire course was laid out by a grand fellow, Al Eames, on a 500 Triumph.

One thing that is not a debate on which is better. To bring the “greener” four strokes on the market and make them competitive, more money had to be brought to the sport. Prices had to go up! As the four stroke technology got more complex the price had to increase. This in turn had to bring up the price for two strokes as well, other wise no one would buy four strokes. Since there was one power stroke to every other rotation of the motor (2 strokes 1 power stroke to one revolution), displacement compensation had to be use. 250 two strokes vs 400 four strokes. Then 440s then the 450. Then the four strokes could over take the two strokes. Along with the redesign of tracks more suitable for four strokes. In the golden days of dirt bikes you could buy your kid a race bike and it not cost what a street bike would cost. You could work on the two strokes yourself easily. Now four strokes are single cylinder Lamborghinis! Look at the pistons and the head design. I’m going to say top end technology. And still to this day we are arguing which is better? Well I want a Lamborghini too, but it better out preform all other cars. Can we have affordable fun back please?

@nestserau

@@rovidbouski4022 You need to maintain things, not ride until they break. Your bank account will say thank you to you. Now tell me fixing a TPI bike is less complicated than fixing a 4-stroke. What 2-stroke fans don't understand is that Japanese gave up on 2-strokes not because they wanted to make more money on parts, but because to make progress on 2-strokes like all the fans want, they would make it more complicated than a 4-stroke. And KTM has done just that! At this point a 250 cc 4-stroke makes equal power to a 250 cc 2-stroke, which just proves that the bet on 4-strokes was absolutely correct. You can as well say that it's more complex to fix an injector than a carburettor which can be true, but the truth is, you never have to fix an injector. It's more complex, but it just works. While I remember my farther always messing around with his carburettor. Yes, he could do that on his lap, but it was unreliable. I have never had a carbureted car or a motorcycle just for that reason. I want to ride, not sit in my garage doing "cheap" maintenance.
