The diamond pitch for quick set up. Good enough for mild rain and wind (if oriented properly). The tent-tarp pitch takes care of heavier weather where you may be dealing with not only rain, but wind that tends to shift around a lot. The two best all-around pitches in my opinion. Well done.

Hi. I'm from the Philippines and recently adapt your 2nd tarp setup. I'm using DD Tarp 3x3. Tested it last weekend here at our northen mountain province. I survived the night even when it's raining very hard and cold. Thanks for this setup! Sub also!

As an old primitive muzzleloader type person. The shelter you are using has been around for a long time. The diamond has many configurations and can be done with many kinds of tarps or home made. Canvas really looks nice.

For the budget minded a 9x12 black plastic sheet can do all that a tarp will. Use pine cones or small stones on the inside wrapped on the outside with paracord instead of sewn- in guyline attachment points. Have used many times in all kinds of weather and all kinds of shapes.

Great tutorial on setting up a tarp tent. Thanks for including the name and source for this tarp, I like the size and reinforced grommet/loop locations on it. I normally keep a packaged handy-dandy (and free) Harbor Freight 5x7 in my pack for whatever needs, but this DST looks like a good investment.

Nice! Never seen the second configuration. I like my DD tarp, but down here in NC it's already getting to be bug season. I can withstand mosquitos, but seems like ticks are worse than they used to be.

I've used the 10'x10' tarp, or newer imported versions which are a bit smaller(around 9.5'x9.5'), to make the half pyramid tent. This ends up with full door flaps. With a true 10'x10' tarp the half pyramid tent should have a peak height of 5' and a floor about 5' x 7'. The good things are door flaps that can be closed and no pole inside the tent. With a 10'x13" tarp, the half pyramid tent becomes the old two person hunting camp tent, with a floor size 7'x7' and a peak height of 6.5'. With a 9.5'x9.5' tarp, the peak height would be 4.75' and the floor size would be about 4.75'x6.7'. A smaller 8.5'x8.5' square tarp can make a half pyramid tent with a 4.25'' peak height with a floor size about 4.25'x6'. If that is a bit short, somebody could sleep at an angle inside, if required. A tarp 7.5'x12' can make a half pyramid tent 6' high at the peak, 7' wide and 4.7' deep, while an 8'x12' tarp can make one 6' high with 7'x5' floor space. A person would sleep across in these. The 10'x10' square tarp has been my favorite tarp size for shelter.

Clay, great tutorial. I currently use a bivy for backcountry hunts but want to include this as an option. Are you throwing a sleeping pad directly on the ground or do you lay down another tarp? My bivy has a waterproof floor so I'm looking for a tip on what tarp shelter users do instead? Thanks!

good videos as always! only one question, I thought flying the tarp means its off the ground, so a diamond fly is when its flying in a diamond configuration. your first setup is a plough point as far as I've always known or am i wrong?. cool tent configuration though, I haven't seen that one before!

How do you deal with wet ground? If you are carrying something to lay on top of, does that end up weighing the same as just carrying a tent? Just curious how you approach it.

Relatively inexpensive?! $149??? For a tarp? Double that and you have a fine tent, same size, weight and fully enclosed..as in no grass under butt, no rain either. Tarp requires zero engineering. It's just material, a few grommets and that one reinforced patch...for the sock. Why is it that much when it requires dancing around and a tree places just so to make it happen?! Also..yeah..water pouring under you because you know..no floor. Btw..if grommets and tarp is your goal..just get a used footprint from a larger tent for a fraction of the price. Thisbset up makes zero financial sense. Its "millioneer's minimalism"😅
