I can’t say that I can remember to much of powwow dancing since I was taken away from my my families from 5yrs old but I have carried a golden shaw that I had won in a powwow when I was little back from where I’m from in Minnesota. I was never even given either side of my family’s names at birth. My fathers sides last name is Moose and I am originally from white earth Minnesota but I still don’t know any relatives but that’s ok. I am older now and know that all my ancestors are with me. 😊 it was so beautiful to be able to see with my own eyes such a beautiful soul dancing. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🥰😊

I understand that Jamal does not dance now, sorry to hear. As young people are wont to do, they often look in many directions as theirs is to seek and learn many things. Perhaps he will return to dance yet again and if he cannot do the grass dance anymore, there is always the traditional dance which I do. I made almost every item on my outfit with the exception of the cuffs and the bag which my wife made. Yes it takes time to make an outfit, but we do it because it is a part of who we are. It is to embrace our heritage and give thanks to our parents for their teaching and to our creator for giving us life. Here is to you Jamal!

thanks for the kind note. interestingly, Jamaal stopped dancing when he was 12. he's 20 now. a couple years ago he was at a pow-wow, heard the drumming, singing and saw others dancing. after that he said he was ready to return but hasn't so far. regardless, all the best to you.

I sat out almost twenty years and am now ready to return. If you start making an outfit and sees you doing it he may want to help. Small steps lead to something else and somehow people get re-inspired and before you know it they are leading the way.

I'm certainly praying! I physically can't grass dance very much due to my knee (tore something at a pow wow) or I would. But I'm only 16 so I guess it has time to heal! That or surgery! But I definitely hope he gets back into it. I personally know that you can't do it forever!

I think this is great, even though it's 5 years ago. I'm 51, is there a possibility I could learn how to do this? Although, I would never expect to be as graceful as this young man. He's terrific!!

I would recommend traditional such as northern traditional and southern strait

Thank you for the feedback. Interestingly, I recorded this 11 years ago for a classroom in France who wanted an overview of the grass dance. My son is 22 now and now longer dances.
