I grow snaps very close, 3-4 inches apart and three in the same "hole", pinch half my snaps and let half go. And even though the snaps throw a second flush, the second is not as nice as the first: very thick stems, a lot of unusable side shoots, shorter vase life. I sometimes wonder if it's the heat or something in the late summer growing conditions that make the second flush a little less desirable.....

All of those packed so closely could have contributed to the thrip problem but those look beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing ❤

Excellent video. Thanks! What did you do to control thrips?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Жыл бұрын
I honestly didn't do anything. I find that snaps grown at the beginning or end of the season fare alot better in terms of not having thrips but at this point, I have now cut out my favorite flower for now bc of thrips :(

If you wanted one out of the three seedlings, you can just snip two of them, rather than trying to separate them... I think I would aim for just one, then take the first spike, remove the plant and put in a new seedling.. Very interesting video Jessie 🎉

Yup that's a great idea! And then root the ones that you snip :)

Excellent Snap Dragon video! May I ask how far apart you plant zinnias?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Жыл бұрын
I personally planted them 6 inches apart last year but would space them further out. I had alot of powdery mildew. That being said, I'm not growing zinnias this year :(

I'm a bit confused... are you saying, 3 seeds per plug and then 3 of those per six inches within the hortonova netting? Another words, 9 per six inches?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Жыл бұрын
3 plants per hortonova square total. It could be 3 seeds in a plug or 3 separate seedlings!

I have been looking for information to identify the series or group that the specific varieties belong too. And good resources someone can point me too. This is my first time trying to grow snapdragons and all I know is there are different groups. I have sprouted the twinney bronze, the cherry twist and the orange wonder. And yes I realize I should have started them much earlier but There is nothing on the packaging that tells me any of that information. I am in zone 9b. Just a home grower and Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Johnny's has a PDF on their website but it's not fully inclusive. Honestly, the best way would be to potentially call the company where you purchased the seed from. I myself also find it hard to find a resource that lays out the groups for some of the lesser known snaps out there!

My issue on Oregon 8b is I get snapdragon rust. Every year! Is it in the soil or what is the issue. I try to water close to the ground and not get the leaves wet and I still get it. 😢
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm Жыл бұрын
It’s probably in your soil but I believe rust is very prevalent in wet humid environments so it’s likely going to persist bc of being in the PNW ☹️. Sorry i don’t have much to offer here since my climate is different!

@@bareflowerfarm That does help. I think it's a combination of being in the soil and hot temps. I just needed confirmation. Thank you again. Laurie

If you're planting snaps again, do you have a plan for fighting the thrips?

I’m interested in this as well. I had these thrips last year….little teeny black bugs all over….the flowers were still amazing, and as I didn’t have plans to sell them I just cut them and enjoyed as I could. Any thrip fighting tips? Thanks Jessie! Love your content! 💐💐💐💐

Plant nasturtium. Thrips prefer them. Plant them in and around your snaps.

Thanks for your comment! Strangely enough, I did have nasturtiums in the same lot as my snaps. Maybe they attracted them in the first place?!? 😂

Have you heard of brix? The idea is that a strong plant has so much sugar content that pests won’t want to feed off of it. So basically, the long term plan is to prioritize and build soil health as a means to fight thrips. This will prob take years but I’m curious if rotating the location this year will make a difference!

I use bios at my farm. Most of my bug pressure is mites and aphids but a lot of the bios will eat thrips as well. Biobest group is where they come from (Canada). Aphidious and californicus is what I use. Use bios as a preventative. Once you have an infestation they aren’t as effective. I put out bios in my greenhouse in March and May and July as a preventative and have not had an infestation (crop loss) since I started this.
