Consider 2-5 period ATR since you are looking to exploit the very recent price movements. As a scalper, keep in mind you are dealing with a lagging indicator. One technique is to go back over the charts during your preferred time of day trading. What is the average ATR during those times. While past doesn't equal the future, it's a start.
