I was in a placement (Surrey Place Centre) where I child was 6 and non verbal up to that point. He was trained on PECS and within his 6 month block he started becoming verbal! I remember him saying "All done" when book was finished! Very exciting!

That is so amazing! Thank you for sharing! I'm definitely noticing that some of the things it seems like she's trying to say are coming from her book. And she seems like she's trying to label things too suddenly which is brand new!

The look in your eyes, the almost crying from happiness that you can finally communicate with her... God, I know how you feel. My 5 year old just started using pegs in ABA therapy class and we are about to bring it home as well (because it works!)... Thanks for sharing, thanks for the video and stay strong! You are amazing and you are moving mountains here!

One of the very best vids parents could see!! It's an excellent instructional video and just perfect for seeing the value of PECS and how to. It shows your daughter's high intelligence, but also her Mom's!

I am trying to research so I can help my 3 year old. He doesn’t say a lot of words. But is meeting all and exceeding some of his other milestones. I’m just trying to get him to be more verbal. He currently uses a lot of non verbal communication for what he wants. He is very happy and a sweet heart. I just want so bad for him to say I love you mommy😢 sometimes I feel that day will never come, I worry all the time. He does show me with hugs and kisses and cuddles but I just want to try and help him as much as i can. He had numerous ear infections and had his first surgery for tubes late bc of pandemic. He then had to go and get tubes put in a second time and adenoids also taken out. We get his ear checked again in a few months. He lost almost 2 years of hearing with repeated ear infections, delays in surgery and then repeat surgery. I have him in speech therapy but I’m trying to find other ways to prompt him to talk more. I was thinking of using pecs at home with him until he gets his assessment. But I am so lost on how to even begin. I have an autoimmune condition and had cancer. I try to do the very best I can for him to help him even when I’m sick. Sometimes it seems like what I do is not enough. 😢

This was actually made by her school. They laminated little pictures and then velcroed them into a little binder. I have seen them on Amazon though if you search PECS book. I hope that helps!

First, I love your shirt! Go Spartans! My son is 17m, and is non verbal. He also doesn’t have much receptive language. My cousin is a Teacher, and suggested I give a PECS board a try. Your lil ones are so cute! My question is does she have strong receptive language? Do you think a lil one that doesn’t understand many words could benefit from this. We got approved for OT right as everything started shutting down. It might be awhile till he can actually get therapy, so I wanted to try what I can.
@Autmazing4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Right now her receptive language is good, but when she started out she would test at 0-6 months in receptive language pretty consistently (at 18 and 24 months, and 24 months was around when she was starting with PECS). I hope that helps. When Tessie started with it I was honestly amazed at how much she understood and how much she was able to express.

Final thought: Will Tessie using PECS influence/make any impact on Maggie and her communication? (directly or indirectly) It is interesting how some kids really take to PECS and others like the IPAD types of programs... But I like PECS.
@Autmazing6 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question and one I've been asking myself a lot lately because it seems like it is affecting her a lot. She is super interested in Tessie's book and in what Tessie is doing with it. For some quick backstory, when Maggie was three, we were discouraged from doing sign or PECS with her when she started therapy because they really felt she was going to be more verbal and they thought it might hold her back. But one speech therapist thought she needed PECS and got her a book and trained me. However the training was maybe ten or fifteen minutes long max. And Maggie had no training in using it. And when we took the book home all Maggie did was stim with it. Fast forward to now, she uses a visual schedule at school very well and when she saw Tessie's book she started grabbing pictures and putting them on the strip. She doesn't use it correctly the way Tessie's been trained to but she definitely "gets" it now and I think she can do it. So I just need to find my laminator, which is missing somewhere out in the garage, and fire it up and make her her own book! Because I think at eight she is definitely ready.

My son gets frusterates to easily so this dont work for him sl we sign with him which i dont mind. Signing is fun to me lol we have been going from pwcs to sign language for a while. He perfers to throw pics everywhere.
@Autmazing6 жыл бұрын
Signing is awesome! I wish we had done it more with Maggie when she was small. Like Augustus, when we tried this with Maggie when she was three we didn't have much luck. I'm thinking of trying it again now that she's older and still has a problem with communicating, because she's watching Tessie now, and she's interested, so I think that might motivate her. If I can just keep her from destroying her book this time. Last time she completely destroyed it inside of a week and I'm afraid that will happen again. I'm kind of afraid she's going to destroy Tessie's. I'm constantly rescuing it from her! Hope you guys have a great Christmas Eve tomorrow!

Yeah, if I was having to play defense with Tessie from her own book... I don't think I could do it. Actually I know I couldn't because that was totally the deal breaker with Maggie. She just stole the pictures and loved them to death. 😂

Very exciting! I am curious why thri chose the pecs over AAC
@Autmazing6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. It seems like PECS is really common here, and like it's what's used in the school districts around us so that would be my best guess. I'm really relieved that they're using it because when Maggie was tiny we were really discouraged from using any thing other than speech (either signing of PECS) with her and I think it would have helped her so much. ❤️
@GuidingAutism6 жыл бұрын
Someday I'll Sleep Autism Vlogs yes I actually remember having that battle myself. I had an aba therapist and a developmental specialist at my house and they had actually cornered my daughter in the kitchen and I came in and was down on the floor with her and trying to comfort her as they argued with each other and then me about how Samara should be communicating. I was so angry I punched a hole in the wall when they left. I really hate that the “experts” don’t all agree with each other. We ended up with an aac device through the state with touch chat. We programmed it ourselves with really simple, real life photos and words. She already had an affinity with devices so she took to it and it really reduced some of her stress with communicating.
@Autmazing6 жыл бұрын
That's so amazing (the part about the device). I actually have an iPad here with all of the programs loaded on it, and they ones we have are really similar to PECS so I'll have to show it to Tessie and at least see how she if she catches on at all. I tried it with Maggie without much luck (she won't even look at it) but I have a feeling Tess might be more interested because she seems to "get" all these things right now at least, a little more easily. And that encounter between speech and ABA (while the argument never out and out happened here in front of us) definitely was the basis of the disagreement that was happening when Maggie was little. I think they just never face to face had it, and if they did not in front of us, thank goodness. I'm really sorry you had to deal with that. ❤️
@cindys59153 жыл бұрын
PECS is a low-tech form of AAC (Augmentative Alternative Communication). What are commonly called "devices" or "AAC devices" are a high-tech form of AAC. Hope that helps!

Yesterday he left a comment making fun of our dog and I was like "people seriously don't know that that's you making fun of our dog!!!!" 😂 Which is why I always try to comment back fast to let people know I don't take him seriously.
