I would definitely back this choice! I was a pizza delivery driver part time after my factory/warehouse job, and boots are the way to go. Especially during the winter boots are pretty much a necessity. A lot of peoples houses are hard to get to especially when rain, snow, mud, gravel etc is in the way add to that carrying oblong shaped boxes and sodas. Boots saved me as a delivery boy.

So true, I'm used to boots lasting at least a year (more if their military issue, though the ones in made for GIs from the Korean War to the Gulf War are seemingly designed to be as uncomfortable as possible), anyhow, I really needed a new pair, so I bought some from Big5. They were super comfortable and in a few months they have holes in on the sides of the toe box (So much for waterproof!) and the outside of the heels wore done pretty quickly.

saving money *for* a purchase is more satisfying to me tbh. Maybe it's just being poor(ish), but it really feels like an accomplishment finding something good quality, setting a budget goal for it, saving up for it, and finally buying it, caring for the item, and having it for a long time feels satisfying and continues to feel satisfying.

Your rant against gatekeeping really tickled me. I never experienced that nonsense until I got into the higher tier work boots. I find it very strange and counter productive for people new to higher end work boots. As a matter of fact I often wore my boots working as a barista and a DM for Starbucks. I'm a landscaper currently. Tough guy kind of job, rough on footwear. But I've been a barista. And a chef. And I've done IT. I've needed high quality, supportive boots all along. I wear boots with a tailored suit. All because I have bad knees, so I need the ankle support, so if my knee fails, I don't twist or roll my ankle during the correction. I watch these videos on TV, so I guess I don't see the comments often enough to have experienced the gatekeeping you referenced in the vid, but wow, if that happens, it's so petty. Also, for me, the extra time the 10 inch boots take to lace is worth it to me, because, have I mentioned the bad knees? Oh, and I'm 6'2", with those bad knees..

Sir, this video is amazing! I recently was promoted from delivery driver to counterman at my auto parts store, and my $50 work shoes were NOT ready for the 8 hours of standing behind a counter. I’m on my second pair in two years and they’ve left me wanting. I started a search for the best work boots and slowly discovered the pricier and pricier brands until I landed on Nicks, Whites, and Wesco. After a bit of further digging, I’ve decided on a moderate arch pair of Builder Pros. I think I’m ready to spend the money, and seeing some posts and anecdotes about them, I trust they’ll be worth it. Your video has been helpful in making this decision. I think I’m gonna go with rough black lower(because our uniform requires black shoes) and a smooth reddish brown upper. And I’ll take your advice and aim more for an 8 inch shaft instead of the long 10 inch one. Anyway, I know I’m commenting on a year old video, but I loved seeing how they’ve held up for you for two years in a more physical environment than mine is! Are they still going strong?

As a guy who’s career went from agriculture and construction to being a Starbucks store manager, I’ve often felt I wasn’t “manly” enough anymore because of my job, a job I’m doing to provide for my family just the same as everyone else. Your words are a great reminder to not let the job or work determine the man, but instead let the amount of work ethic, intentions, and character that go into the work be the defining factors. You’ve inspired this carhartt wearing barista to get the Nicks I’ve been wanting so I can finally stop replacing my Wolverines,Redwings, and Danners (that have been worn down from 8-10 hours of barista work a day and an outdoorsman’s live in the PNW) without caring about being put into the “tough” or “soft” crowd. A year ago I was looking for a new boot and saw your review. I bought a pair based on your recommendation. I have the same boot with the exception that I have smooth leather on the upper and I bought a 2" shorter boot. OMG, these are my favorite boots. I have a small hobby farm that I work on on the weekends. These boots will last me the rest of my life. If you're thinking about getting a pair from Nick's, spend the extra for the fitting. It's so worth it. Since then I've bought a more dress like boot using the same fitting. I'm sold.

I feel the only way they can improve it is by making more so the price becomes lower. It Seems like the price maybe the only negative about it. But I guess that could sacrifice the quality as well. Great video as always sir. Thank you for making it.

Nicks charge more because of the brand, reputation, and people are willing to pay that cost. I personally prefer the Whites or Drews Boots. Drews boots are easily 100 dollars cheaper, and they are awesome. That being said, Nicks are still really good boots, but I'd go with Wesco, Whites, or Drews for the cheaper price.

Love your videos and just wanted to say since you are having worries about the laces on your boots I think you should totally check out Pisgah Range LTD. They make American handmade tough-as-nails laces in all kinds of colors and patterns for a reasonable price. I think you can agree as someone who really puts in the work the laces are often overlooked but critical and usually the first thing to fail. So I think not just yourself but a lot of people would appreciate or even be enlightened by a review of them or any heavy-duty laces brands or such. Just my two cents of course but thought I might as well throw out the idea. Thanks again for the videos and love the setup! Very Late Show vibes.

I'm interested in the Builder pro and the urban logger.......Is the Urban logger as ruggedly built as the builder pro?
@RiZenAsH4 жыл бұрын
I’m interested in the same two pair but just found out that I can get the builder pro with a 6 inch shank so that’s the pair I’m going to go with. I’m a truck driver and just want a good durable work boot that works in all climates but without the tall shank.
@AcapRoseknightDrummer4 жыл бұрын
@@RiZenAsH Same here. Love the ruggedness of urban logger. but in the end, I just ordered my MTO builder pro. I asked for 8" and you can choose different leather for the upper part and lower part.

Same build quality, A perfect one for me would be an 8 inch upper.

I believe the urban logger and builder pro are the same construction quality. The only difference is the urban logger comes in some 6 ounce leathers which they don’t offer the builder pro in. They only offer builder pros in there 8 ounce leather options

Late to the party here but everything Nicks makes is overbuilt. I'm a whites boots guy but there's no denying nicks is just a step up in build. I just like the look of most whites better. That urban logger is gorgeous.

I do Pest/Termite Control as my job. So, walking on ALL KINDS of terrain is, basically, my job. Along with going into crawl spaces. I decided to get the Bison Builder Pros in Oxblood, Smooth/Rough-out config, and bought some Thursday logger boots in the meantime (one of their made in the USA line boots). Alongside some other boots from Thursday, and Redwing. However, The Thursdays made me more excited to get those Builder Pros! I think I've gone down the rabbit hole, and won't come out! xD

2:50 I like this part. Although since I don't work in anything phisical I just stay away from certain footwear. I'd love to have a Logger though, but I can see that it's not the most ideal for a lot of walking in concrete which is what I do the most.

I bought my 10" Builder Pro's late last year. I work in IT so I don't wear them for work, but I wanted something that would support my very high arches while I work in my shop (woodworking and blacksmithing) in the evenings and weekends. I also do tree removal volunteer work after hurricanes/tornadoes in the Southeast and I got tired of dealing with cheap (or expensive) Chinese boots. The custom fit is absolutely the way to go. I had a couple of small issues with the boots they sent for fitting and when, at long last, I got my boots, those issues had been taken care of. The break-in was not that bad and it wasn't long before these became the most comfortable footwear I've ever owned. They are indeed a gateway drug. I now have a pair of Roberts and if I ever do wear either one out, I will be buying more.

Wore my first pair of Nick's on the job today. I bought them in 2005, and they're still quite capable. I have other pairs now, but both my oldest pairs are still good-they could use tongue replacements, but have been resoled a time or two each. They've got some more life in 'em. Because I wear them so much it took about three years to break in my newest pair, but they're nearly fully broken-in now. I'm a surveyor and woodsman.

I own three sets of nicks and whites. Nicks are just a little tougher than whites. Everything you say is spot on. honey vibrams are not great on ice or slick surfaces, but they are more shock absorbent. I have 6", 8", and 10" I would go with the 8 if I were to do it all again. My three boots are similar to yours, just different options on each of the choices. I would have gone rough out on my work boots. And you are exactly right, they are a gateway drug.

Well done/said, Carl!! I purchased a pair of 9" Red Wing Loggermax boots for $239 about 10 days before making this comment. I saw them at my local Red Wing store and thought that they looked like a durable boot, that I could have resoled later down the road. I should mention that they were made in Vietnam. After about three serious wears (cutting I-beams with an angle grinder and cutoff wheel), the beautiful soft leather had a few serious cuts and gashes, however, my jeans were not affected. This is NOT what I was expecting from my first pair of Red Wings... . When it comes to high performance boots, I was ruined when I bought a pair of Italian made La Sportiva Nepal Evos (a $500 ice climbing boot). I use the Evos primarily for off-trail hiking/backpacking in the mountains in the the desert South West, in super-hot temperatures, where everything is jagged and brutal to anything that touches them. They're heavy, super-stiff, crazy comfortable, and 100% predictable in the worst of steep rock scree. I'm about to send them in for a second resoling ($100 with cobbler, Dave Page, in Seattle WA - one of the very best in the business). I'm the organizer of an outdoor adventure group that brings out all of the savages "hiding under the rocks" in the area. I see what new gear they're wearing on their feet about every six months - compared to my rock-solid three year old Evos. The Red Wings are going back, and I think I'm going to go with the Nicks after seeing this video. Take it from a guy who seriously beats the stuffing out of his boots... twice the price is something you'll soon forget about after the boots break you in. You'll especially appreciate the return on your investment after your first resoling.

Your comment about gateway boots is so freaking true. I started with a pair of Danner moc toe wedge boots for warehouse work. I know danner isnt great anymore but it was a gateway. I now own Whites, Wolverines, Red Wings, and am waiting for a good paycheck to get a pair of Nicks. I've also invested a ton of money into shoe trees, leather care products, and dove down the rabbit hole of good year welted heritage boots. Its a drug.

A year after watching this video I finally broke down and ordered a pair of builder pros yesterday but was bit by the bug and ordered a pair of White’s moc toe boots also. I’m glad I waited though because they have that newer 1964 leather for them with the honey vibrim sole. I can’t wait for them to come in.

Just got my Builder pros today and have worn them 4 hours. Felt so good I did not want to take them off. Update. I have now had my Nicks for 6 months. Fully broke in. I wear them for everything. The smooth upper fits nicely under pants legs and the Vibram sole has little wear. I would have went with an 8 inch vs 10 but apart from that I would change nothing.

On your rant at 2:20, I can understand where you are coming from, but I can also understand the other side of the argument. I've worked in the trades my whole life and I've spent years looking for the best boot for the money. I understand the importance of buying quality: I've tried all the big names, including the Nick's Builder Pros, but I've come to realize several things over the years, mainly, what works and what doesn't in a boot for me. I think its really important for the reviewers of these boots to understand not everyone works in the same environment, whether that makes me more "macho" because something doesn't work for me is up to you to decide. I work in rough, hard, dry terrain - not soft forests; I've learned to stay away from the crepe, blown sole of Thorogoods and Red Wings, because they melt in two months: In my experience, I try to buy boots with Vibrams, as I can get the longest life out of them. I never resole my boots - the uppers are too worn and dried out to make it worth it, but I am religious about cleaning and conditioning them. The Nick's Builder Pros lasted me about ten months, the roughout leather catches too much sand, calcium, and lime and dries them out, even when cleaning and conditioning them. The longest lasting pair of boots I've owned was a pair of Chippewa Made In the USA Logger boots, lasting over two years; the shortest lasting was a pair of Thorogood Emperor Safety Toes with a measly three months. I try to buy boots around the $200-250 range, because they generally last a year or so, spending any more than that and I seem to just waste money without getting any extra life out of them. I understand how hard it is to buy new boots when you actually work in them and rely on them to protect your feet. If you are buying a pair of Iron Rangers just to post a photo of them sitting on a crate to Instagram or Reddit, by all means, its your money, but don't mislead people by saying they will last you a decade when you don't work in them. I'm sorry if that offends somebody, but I think the best thing somebody can do when shopping for boots to work in is to really think what's realistic for them and their work environment, even ask guys you work with what their experience is! I greatly appreciate everyone who's busting ass in the trades (especially in this crisis!) and thank you Carl for your in depth reviews!

Consider Nicks in the future especially considering I have back issues and work long hours too.

Appreciated the review. Been working through the DIY sizing process this week. The price point is really all about mindset. I’ve been blessed or cursed, however you want to look at it, with fugal/tightwad mentality. I always think I have to justify everything to someone else. Usually it’s just the asshole in my own head. $500 - $600 for work boots just mentally exceeds the benchmark, again for the idiots that live in our heads. Price per wear is absolutely the measure. Orthotics can cost over $600 alone. Not to mention chiropractic care. Heck I don’t know about you but our weekly grocery bill is over $300 and that one use. We spend $500 on a lot things. No guilt. I’m placing my order today.
