Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Suggestion: Make a closet in your 2nd bedroom and use it for a pantry. Your guests probably won't need a closet. It would make your kitchen organization easier. You should have a friends party where you ask as many people as possible to come for an afternoon to help organize your junk piles and lumber. Just ask for help. If you sorted all your lumber and all the stuff lying around, you'd be able to more easily build your wood shed and side the cabin. That's a LOT of work before winter. You may want to prioritize the building wood storage and build it closer to the cabin because you aren't always going to be able to haul wood. If you get sick, or injured, you aren't going to want to haul wood that far in the middle of winter even with a tractor. Put it close enough to the cabin that you could move it in an emergency/blizzard. Honestly, you should just forget the garden this year. At this point in the season, you don't really have enough time for those tomatoes to produce. If you want to focus on the garden at all, focus on building the soil for next year instead of trying to produce food this year. Your kale is going to be ok, just fertilize it. Get some GOOD compost (if you can source some rabbit poop somewhere there's nothing better) and use it like a mulch or work it into empty beds. Also, bury your food scraps in the beds and buy some worms and put them in each bed. By next year your plants will be much happier.

Thank you for the video! Our cupboards and cabinets look like that too, and finished woodwork always seems to take forever, it takes a backseat b/c it's not necessary and our minds think we have to do the essentials first. Our gutter and downspout need repair badly, and we are getting to it ASAP... you don't want that much puddling water by the foundation, esp when the rains and snow loads come, so fix that fascia. Great advice from @lindak3030 about the woodpile too!

Jasmine.............If I, practical plodding Taurean that I am, came to live with you for three months, I would. 1 buy enough tarpaulines to cover all outdoor perishables. 2 tidy neatly everything outside. 3 tidy neatly everything inside. Let the two of you sort the garden. 4 sit down with you and make lists. The first list would be of all the jobs that are of vital importance ( your cabin exterior cladding, guttering and pipework insulation , plus trim on all your windows) etc. The second list would deal with external storage for cut timber and logs. Then I would look at servicing, maintenance and storage shed for small motor vehicles ie tractor. Then there is the damp issue indoors (do you need professional guidance regarding managing the condensation issues on your internal water tanks?) I’d let everything cosmetic wait and everything that’s indulgent wait and With so much important vital work outstanding, how do you have time to tend to vegetable growing? That’s intense at this time of year! This video pretty much illustrates that you are overloaded and need to narrow your focus and establish consistent stable working and living routines. Rome was not built in a day girls!❤

I recall being asked if my house was clean enough that I could host a party that evening. I tentatively said "yes" thinking it wouldn't be an issue. I went home, walked into my house and looked at it with "party mode" eyes and nearly passed out. EVERYONE's house is far from perfect. Everyone has house issues. Your house is incredible when you look at what you started with and what you have done in such a short time. Congrats on that. Loved this video. P.S. I don't have a fry in my stove but my 'fridge needs cleaning every day of my life.

it is a work in progress, every week you have projects to do. I think that A wood shed for your firewood will be a priority as you know what a pain it is to try and get it over to your cabin. The interior can be done on wet days. You have already done so much to your cabin and the outside area. it has changed dramatically since you first moved in and I am very pleased for you. And ... you've gotten a lot done in just two years. You turned that neglected structure into a lovely home. In no particular order --> kitchen, windows, floors, ceilings, bathroom, tree falling, ground clearing and grading, solar power + battery bank, deck, woodstove, driveway, roof, utility shed, spa area, gardens, fruit trees, wiring, plumbing, ... I'm sure I forgot some tasks but still, that's a lot of accomplishments in about 2 years.

You both are absolutely inspiring and a joy to follow! Well done on everything so far! As far as the pesky aphids, could be too much nitrogen in the soil but the best solution is to order ladybugs and release them in the green house. They will work hard and eat those pesky aphids up, and your plants should flourish. Good luck!

the closet with the pump n water heater . see if you can find a shower base with a drain that fits under there drain the water out under the cabin. the aphids you can get rid of by putting a small amount of liquid soap in a spray bottle of water and spray the plants. doesant hurt the plants but keeps a lot of pests off. check the tomatoes for bugs slugs or snails the soap mix helps with those to. and tomatoes need support so stake them up n tie them to the stakes, put your firewood on pallets in an open sided shed so you can grab a pallet at a time with the tractor they sell a mesh bag just for balletizing firewood so keep your pallets lol 6 cords gonna take a boatload of them. your outdoor kitchen? all i can advise is make sure it gets shade and is close to where your eating. just suggestions love you girls proud of you mike

It's almost August so it's time to start thinking about your fire wood for this winter. I posted this tip in an earlier video that you want to save the pieces from branches and other "rounds" (4" to 6" plus or minus in diameter depending on the size of your stove) for your night time stoking. Because they are "whole" they put out more BTU's and burn longer than "split" wood of the same size. You probably know this but some of your viewers may not. You want to use the wood you have had the longest first. Any wood that is or starting to rot you can do one of two things with. 1. Chop the rotting bits off and use it to fortify your garden beds and 2. Use the entire piece to fill the bottom of your raised garden beds. Rotting wood already has the bacteria and bugs feeding on the wood breaking it down and tuning it into a nutrient rich soil and because it's already decomposing it creates heat keeping your beds warmer so the wood keeps breaking down into the colder months. The added benefit of using rotting wood is that it doesn't pull nitrogen from the soil to start the decomposition process. The decomposition process takes a lot of nitrogen to get it going so your soil will become nitrogen deficient until the process gets going and puts all that nitrogen back into your soil. Low or nitrogen deficient soil will slow your plants development and will reduce the size and amount they produce.

Your Iron Horse Clementine needs a barn. Something big enough to store all your outdoor power sports toys and equipment. Motorcycle, ATV, mule, Clementine,,,. Perhaps even the vehicles? Maybe a 40' × 80' or 50' × 100' Pole building. You also might have a small shed dropped off just for the fuel cans gas, diesel, and propane tanks,,. Storing them out of the elements and away from everything else. Keeping the electrified Pack, shed separate and safe. I think I would turn your bedroom back into a bedroom With a view. Turn the spare bedroom into the laundry room /Hallway Leading to a master bedroom suite with fireplace and walk in shower and tub. Maybe doubling the square foot of your current Home. You girls have done a beautiful job thus far. Keep up the Excellent work. Love the learning process for you both. Love the pack!

Yep we all have bits to do and stuff to put away, crap to get rid off. Pick the most important thing first like the wood shed ready for winter. Aphids, pint of water, and two teaspoons dish soap spray the aphids. Im only one person cant do much over winter but plenty to do. You two have achieved so much since moving in, be proud and start preparing for the winter and whats important like missile pieces of wood x Aunty Australia ❤

You are your own worst enemy moving your lumber around. You'll take 20-30 minutes to stack it neatly on the forks... then just to go and dump it off in a disheveled pile. All you got to do is jump off the tractor and lay a chock (sometimes referred to as a sticker), on each side of the forks, and set your load on that. Takes maybe 30 seconds a side. Then back up and slip your forks out from underneath. AND if you use a little finesse, and make flat topped stacks, you can repeat this process numerous times, and stack up to eyeball height, and maybe a little further. As far as your question as to how much you'll get done this year; I would say YES to everything right up to restacking and moving all that firewood. I'm guessing that would take weeks in and of itself, soooo probably not including that. As always, thanks for sharing!

APHIDS-Homemade One spray bottle of water combined with two teaspoons of laundry or dish soap creates a powerful spray against aphids. Aphids are covered by a waxy surface; this surface locks water inside the body. The soap/water mixture washes away the waxy surface; eventually, the aphids dehydrate and die. The mixture causes no damage to your birch tree. Another mixture is to add three parts warm water, one part vegetable oil and a couple drops of soap. Combine the mixture in a spray bottle. Ladybugs are great, too. I just finished spraying and they are gone! Make sure to rinse off the plants after about 10 mins of the solution being on your plants.

I think it unlikely that you will be able to finish all of these tasks this summer. That is not a bad thing. I am a practical sort of person, so the things that are essential to your safety and security appeal as higher priority. Fixing the roof corner: potential leaks can undo all the good work you have done inside. Doing the siding: help with insulation in the winter. Utility room plumbing: potential to cause damage to work already done. Building a fire wood shed (if you can get your tractor to it, placing it next to the house adjacent to the kitchen seems a convenient location) Other outside projects & finally Internal fittings and fixtures can probably wait until winter. Good luck!

A lot of great work has been done and everything looks beautiful despite some disorganization here and there. I am a bit concerned about the trees which are close to the house and lumber. I believe it is high priority to create a fire free corridor by cutting down some trees to mitigate any risk of fire from the forest. I think you had some scare a few weeks ago.

We are ALL not perfect, I find dried mushrooms I my fridge down in the veggie bin or that cucumber that went bad because I didn't see it back there, and yeah I can relate to the overflow of laundry, or pet hair that floats around under the bed . Those immaculate houses, we see they usually have a house cleaner or they don't have to work 1-2 jobs

I just thought of your new pantry, canned good storage room. You could build it off the back of your cabin. From either of your bedrooms. That way, in winter, there was no walking outside, it will keep foods more at the right temperatures and less shopping trips. Especially when roads are bad. Just a thought ladies.

What's in that wood building by the deisal cans? Maybe put some shelfson back side of it. To put empty Deisal cans and Gas cans to keep the neet and accessible when you need to get fuel supplies refilled.

Very brave of you both lol. I wouldn’t do it. Mine are worse by far! You forgot to add something to the living room list. You need a heat shield on the wall behind your wood stove. I’m surprised your insurance company is allowing it without. It’s an easy fix though. Thx for the tour girls❤.

Free 3 ingredients rhubarb leaf aphid spray recipe. 8 cups water, 3 or 4 large (12-16 inches across) rhubarb leaves torn up into hand sized pieces, and one quarter cup pure soap flakes. Simmer leaves in water until liquid is half boiled away. Pour through a strainer into bowl or bucket. Mix in soap flakes. Cool. Pour into a capped bottle and store in a cool, secure place until ready to use. To use: dilute half rhubarb leaf mixture and half water. Spray on aphid infested plants. This recipe is taken from ‘the Rhubarb Cookbook by Janet Smart. It works! 😊

Such an honest vlog this week, thanks for that. You have so much on the go and while that's already a monumental task to complete, you have/want to vlog about it as well. Keep up the good work and the great vlogs. Am looking forward to them each week.

I would put the wood shed beside the house on the right. This way you and just pick up off the front deck. I would also buy a small to medium size trolly with big rubber wheels so you can fill it up in the shed and wheel it in the house near the stove.

As the daily dishwasher in our family, I was aghast to see the full sink 😮. When my ex-husband were building our 2 story home, there were always 50 projects for 15 months of the build doing everything ourselves. You move to another one until you have the supplies to finish the others.

Hi you two...I just want to let you know that I don't come to your channel to be entertained...I look forward to spending a bit of time with you as you share parts of your life with all of us. Your home...your beautiful boys...the beauty of your land...and frankly 'just you'! It's enough. You're enough. I'm inspired by your creativity and willingness to take on projects to improve your life there. Soon Fall will be upon us once again...and preparing for winter will occupy some of our time as the days unfold. Please know you're appreciated...not for 'entertainment' value...as two women willing to face life's challenges and joys together. Thank you for letting me come along. Take the best of care of one another. 🫂🌹🫂 Northern California.
