"Don't put it down, put it away!" ☆ It's the best. Another one: "Let the container be the bad guy." Means you don't go by number with your stuff/items, but by limited space/container. Whether it's a drawer, a basket or a shelf. Only keep as many as fit in there. When it starts to get crowded and bulky, declutter!

Probably a weird comment but I'm a weird person.. so oh well.. I'm a professional cleaner, it is quicker and more effective to wipe mirrors and surfaces down starting at the top and moving down side to side instead of in circles. It ensures you get every inch of the surface and prevents putting dirt back on the clean areas. It's also quicker. Just a tip! Love your videos, keep it up.

I got a new bathroom vanity recently. Massive change from the old one that literally had disintegrating chrome on the faucets. It looks so good that I decided to just always keep the bowl clean and everything off the top but a soap dispenser. It just takes seconds to wipe out the bowl each time I use it, and seconds to put my stuff in the drawers in morning when done. Always looks good when i go in there; I never have to think about it. Same with that making the bed first thing in the morning, glad I made that a habit.

Isn’t it click bait to have a title saying 60 second habits but then have things that take more than 60 seconds (like dishes, cleaning fridge, talking to people, donating/selling a box of clothes, etc…)
@alanparsonsfan2 жыл бұрын
@@massages_for_world_peace8909 Perhaps it's that most of these can at least get started in 60 seconds. And once you're started, you'll feel like doing what would benefit you anyway, and then get it done in another minute or so. I think that we put off the things he talks about because we greatly overestimate how much time and effort these will actually take. I know I do. It reminds me that in large French families, especially in the former coalmining areas in the North, there was a golden, adamant rule : " Personne de sort de table les mains vides ! Thus, the table was neatly cleared up and everything stashed away in a jiffy.

I am rather impressed that a young man deals responsibly with all this and think about it .... bravo.... I am doing the same... I learned it with the years passing by ... I was very messy in the beginning when I was 20, but the notion of Feng Shui, the desire for harmony and beauty, did a lot for me and now it has become a game to find creative solutions and so on... I am very sensitive and intuitive with Feng Shui... So I surprise myself now... and it is always possible to go deeper and deeper in these "minimalist" actions... I am feeling surprised with myself about it... because I am an Aries woman... and Aries are mostly adventurous... but we also take life as a game, we like life to be functional and simple... and I have the feeling that it is the same for you... because it would not be recommended to be obsessed about this, because we should not forget about "essential" things... and not losing oneself or escape oneself in details...but anyway, this is also a mean to clarify our world and simplify it... this can be practised as a kind of conscious karma yoga action... I am curious about your astrological sign ? I am practising astrology for years ... And I find funny your title : 20 lazy habits for a clutter free home... 😉😇😄

Three things that have helped me get better about keeping the home clean and tidy: 1. How to break procrastination: Time yourself doing various tasks you tend to avoid. Most tasks take a lot less time than you think they do, especially if you're doing them regularly. I stopped dragging my feet on my weekly bathroom clean when I realized it took only 30 to 40 minutes, a small price to pay for a bathroom that never gets too grimy. 2. How to handle decluttering "maybe" items: When you get hung up on something, not sure if you should get rid of it, relocate it so it's in your way and/or in your face for a set period of time (like a week or month). You'll quickly decide if that kitchen gadget (for example) is worth keeping around if you have to pick it up and move it every time you reach for a coffee cup for 30 straight days. 3. How to keep up with the million small tasks that constantly crop up in the kitchen: A working kitchen is never perfectly clean. The floor nearly always needs to be swept again. Countertops, canisters, cabinet doors, small appliances, etc. could always stand a quick cleaning. At least one shelf of the fridge probably needs more attention. Or maybe you just need to put away clean dishes. Do you know what else constantly happens in the kitchen? Tiny bits of idle time. Waiting on the microwave or coffeemaker to do their thing? Waiting on water to boil? Got less than five minutes left on the oven timer? Stay in the room, and spend those little 2 to 5 minute gaps of time knocking out some of the small kitchen tasks that tend to be done less often than they should be. Those little moments add up, and once it becomes a habit, your kitchen will be consistently cleaner than it is now, and feel less like a giant To Do List in room form whenever you walk in there... without you having to do more dedicated cleaning sessions.

For the fridge, I highly suggest writing dates on everything that you put in. If it's leftovers, use a dry or wet erase marker to write what's inside and the date. On condiments, write the date you opened it. When I clean out the fridge, it's super easy for me to say "any leftovers that are more than a week old, they're out." No guessing, no pulling off the lid to smell it.

New sub here...great ideas in this video I'm looking forward to trying. Some ideas I do already, so that is encouraging. I live in a small 1-BDRM apartment, and I'm an online grad student. That means I'm home a lot, and the space is tiny which makes clutter seem to accumulate fast. The kitchen seems to be the heart of my home, so I tend to focus my energies there first thing in the morning. My home runs so much more smoothly if I empty the dishwasher first thing--meaning I must run it the night before. If not, then dishes end up everywhere in the kitchen b/c I'm focused on whatever I'm studying and don't want to break that work flow. If I do empty it, then I can put dishes in there immediately throughout the day (put it away; don't put it down). When everything gets backed up in the kitchen, it seems like everything else in my home does, too. That kitchen mess becomes a roadblock, so I try to focus on not creating that problem for my future self to solve.

I recently stumbled across your KZbin channel, and I really appreciate the content provided. My morning routine of making the bed, unloading the dishwasher etc. for the past couple of years gives me peace of mind when work and family areas of my life get crazy. So additional ideas are always welcome!

Great advice Gabe. I just found your videos. I am learning a lot! I have always been a clean person. But tidying up can be quite stressful sometimes. I have been trying to find a boot replacement for my old boots. The problem is: the shoe company does not make the same model and color anymore. The inner soles have come off. Right now listening to your take on the rule one in and one out. I think I will invest in a high-quality pair of boots or look up shoe repair in my area. Sometimes the need for a pair of shoes is important since we are on our feet most of the time. My aunt has always taught me to invest in items I know I will use regularly and I will feel comfortable. I have always done the same method she taught me, to lookup an item I think I need right away/ will need later, save it in the shopping cart, wait seven days to two weeks if I still needed then buy it if not I don't buy it. Sometimes limiting how many things we bring into our homes can impact us in so many ways. Thank you!

@PerfectionPending 🧙♀️ Yes. It can be helpful for the price to drop. But the only items I ever do buy online every three or four months is cleaning supplies (Amazon - Eco-Friendly products), hygiene items (Super Zero shower bars), and condiments that I can't find in my local supermarket, such as Japanese, Taiwanese, or Polish ingredients. And when I am about to run out of art materials too. 😁 Thank you for the advice.

I agree!!! I store my food containers with the lids on!!! Why doesn’t everyone?!?! My minimalism tip is to try eCloth - so much easier to use than a paper towel and spray cleaner and works better. I especially love using one to wipe the fridge shelves!!! I use the regular one to wipe everything down and then the polishing one to make it shine. These cloths are amazing - it even gets stains out of my carpet. And no, I don’t sell them 😂
@raynacurtis2 жыл бұрын
I could never store my storage containers with the lids on… I simply don’t have enough storage space. I keep a decent number of containers because I like to cook a few large dishes that provide a number of portions which I then eat for a few days and then freeze the rest. I’d definitely run out of room if I tried to store them the way Gabe suggests but otherwise the video is spot on.

My apt is really small, the main living space is 189 square feet. Since I work from home, I have a desk with 3 monitors (I run a lot of tools to do my job). I make the bed because it makes the apt look nice but I used the bed which is to the right of me as an extension of my desk. That's where my headset sits when not in a meeting, my phone (I need it for my work tool's authentication) my paper notebook. When the day is done the stuff on the bed goes on to a shelf or into a drawer. Super easy.

It’s refreshing to see these tips presented by a guy. I see posts and videos so often that seem to play on a Mom Against the Apes trope. Most men I know enjoy and appreciate an orderly house as much as most women, so tell us how *you* go about it. I particularly liked your Two Minute guideline. It puts most jobs into perspective. Good job!

*_"It's a victory"_* That image hits home! Although I _love_ a made up bed, to say that I find actually _doing_ the task a burden isn't an overstatement. I don't think I'm either lazy or incompetent, but somehow getting the pillows, sheets and bedspread all even, smooth and looking nice is virtually impossible for me. When I think I'm finished, there's always something that is hanging crookedly or stubbornly wrinkled. I *_hate it._*

We don't have a dishwasher but dishes building up in the sink stress me out. So I handwash dishes 3 or 4 times a day, which sounds awful, but as I do it frequently, it rarely takes long at all. I need a tidy kitchen at the end of the day as waking up to dirty counters or piles of dishes makes me cranky and starts the day on the wrong foot entirely. It's such a little thing but makes a huge difference in my attitude going forward.

Hi Gabe. These are good habits. I do two things that helped me. I keep a small garbage can in the hallway. We are a big family and it helps to avoid small garbage cans in bathroom get overflowed. I also spray the sink out daily. It avoids the build up. I also do one thing a day. Things like change sheets, do one load of clothes. I was working many hours all weekend to catch up from the week and it was too much…. Thanks, I love your channel.

Good advice. I'll say the most important thing is to stop buying and instead get rid of stuff. You'll know youve made it when you can actually see your room again or what the bottom of a drawer is made of. The less crap you have, the less to de-clutter. By shifting around ever increasing junk or buying more ways to hide junk, you'll reach a point where you wont be able to de-clutter and you'll give up trying. Then all you can do is light a match to the place, get in your car with nothing and drive away.

After paying attention, I noticed that the trash can was full on the weekend and almost kinda full the night I put out the cans for pickup. My regular trash rule now is: trash bag out on weekend, and again on the Tuesday night when I put out trash cans for pick up. On that night I finish filling up the trash can with trash from the smaller cans in the bathroom and bedrooms. It’s just me now in the house, and this plan works for me. I like being on a schedule/routine.

One thing that helps me to get a clear idea : I just stop, sit down and simply really look to get a large overview (or scan is a better word) the place where I am sitting and I just kind of detect and record what is disharmonious or superflu... and then I go into action...to have this kind of look, I observed that my glance is coming from the back of my eyes, let's say my back brain... the glance from forebrain is the glance of a prey bird, focussing or zooming on one thing... I also use it when I don't know what to do in my day, or if I am feeling mentally confused or kind of a little bad or uncomfortable, or kind of "paralysed"... I begin by small actions like this, cleaning or putting in order one place, and then the wheel of action and creativity is arising little by little naturally and at the end I am full of joy and content... I also did think about the causes of that tendency to produce mess... on my side, being an Aries, it is my impatience to go forward for a specific action... so this is a kind of lack in that case of being calmly in the present and disfruit of the action... karma yoga (yoga of action) is important for an Aries... Detachment and calm...
