The creepiest invisible wall I've seen in a video game would have to be from Assassin's Creed Black Flag, especially if you're on the water at night or during a storm and it pops up from out of nowhere, it's really eerie looking almost like a gigantic mythical beast is going to come out of it to attack the Jackdaw

A lot of good ones in this video, surprised you didn't cover the quite clever invisible wall in "Mad Max" as a violent storm & brutal winds with lightning strikes nail you going out into the outer regions past the map yet a few fantastic surprises can be found there. Also 2010 "Medal of Honor" had some of the worse completely invisible walls outside with no explanation that unfortunately broke immersion.

I'm sure someone else has already said it but imma say it too. In Sea of Thieves, it is explained quite clearly why you ship breaks apart and you sink when going too far out. Just not immediately in your face. It's explained by the in game story and lore. The dark cloud that surrounds the map is called "The Shroud" which is a magical myst that tears apart and consumes anything that goes into it and literally the game's first ever story line (called a Tall Tale) was about a relic called "The Shroudbreaker" which would supposedly allow you to part the shroud as you traveled through it and light your way allowing you to reach a place called "The Shores Of Gold".
@killerrick96432 жыл бұрын
The sea of thieves one is actually explained in lore as a storm keeping you from leaving. In the last tall tale you use the shroudbreaker to part the storm to reach an unreachable island

Yo, you forgot borderlands lol. Ill explain it too. In borderlands when you try to leave the map usually in most games there are these tower with turrets on them and they of course will shoot and kill you. Its funny because they give you ample warning and you actually lose money if they shoot and kill you. Its also interesting because there is actual lore behind them. The corporation Dahl set up those towers to keep prisoners "safe" they brought to Pandora for cheap labor. They were actually used to keep them in certain spaces, they didn't actually protect shit. Cuz during the winter is when they came to Pandora to setup mining ops and all the bad stuff was hibernating then and when summer rolled around...oh buddy it was bad. Needless to say they got the hell out of there and left behind those prisoners and the towers and much more. Like Sanctuary :D I think it deserves an honorable mention at least because borderlands is one of those fun and unassuming games you don't think about things like lore and stuff. There is a lot of interesting things to discover and learn about it. Good game series!

The Ratchet and Clank reboot of 2016 has the same shark method as the first Jak and Daxter game. There’s also a certain horror game in which players could cheese the game by going outside the bounds of the map, so in the sequel, the developers made it so that if you go outside the map, you instantly fall into a bottomless pit, and you get a message saying that even a glitch in the game can’t save you.

In Conan Exiles the whole endgame is to escape the invisible wall (Ghost Fence). At the beginning of the game your character is bonded with a bracelet to prevent you from leaving the playable area. There’s a lot of lore around the creation of this wall in game and reassembling items of power present when the wall was created is how you escape. I thought this was an interesting invisible wall.

I always thought the Mako sections of Mass Effect had some bizarre invisible walls. I mean, you're on a planet with an ATV with the wonkiest physics imaginable and a starship monitoring your every move, but go outside the red lines and Joker starts yelling at you. Fail to heed his warnings and (presumably) the Normandy will airlift you back to your starting position on the map. What makes it even more odd is the fact that some of the minerals and points of interest lie beyond the map boundaries. Funny this wasn't patched out in the Legendary Edition.

I seem to remember an invisible wall in "Crystalis" for the Nintendo 8-bit. You are on a surf board and if you travel too far the water pushes you back as if it is flowing in the opposite direction. Even with your fastest speed you will have to change direction after a short time. For the arcade game, "Cadash" if you travel too far into the forbidden forest, it will "appear" as if you are traveling deeper by having trees move past you, but the moment you turn around and try to return, you will see you have not traveled at all and were in fact warping from one exact spot to another.
@AndrewBlechinger2 жыл бұрын
The Cadash trick is also how the infinite staircase worked in SM64. If the game detected that you were in a certain area before the final level without having collected 70 stars, it would warp you part of the way back down. The secret to bypassing it is to simply build up so much speed that you are not detected as being in the trap area.

Lego island 2 had a very creative "invisible wall" or "invisible portal" may be a better description. If you try to head out onto the ocean away from the Island, you just arrive at the island again from the other side 😄

There was an old game "Vangers", where the world was like a tube or pipe: left and right will be cycled, but up and down - not. And it took some time for a player to get it )

One that really sticks out to me is the New Austin area in RDR2 prior to the epilogue. I had a ton of fun seeing how far I could get into the area before being gunned down by invisible bounty hunters.

One of my favorite Invisible Walls in games is in ATV Offroad Fury, not unlike the one in Motocross Madness. In the Free Roam mode of Offroad Fury, if you hit the Invisible Wall, it also launches you, high in the air, and away from the wall. My sister and I would hit the wall constantly just to see how far we could launch ourselves. The first time seeing it was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

I don't hear the Darkness mentioned very often in lists - super cool to hear. It was one of the first games that was reccomended to me by an Xbox friend many moons ago, and I really enjoyed it.

Ghost of tsushima had something like this if you went into a barbarian area I guess you weren't supposed to you'd get arrows from out of nowhere that would consume you.

My favorite invisible wall was on an old Amiga shareware game, Antepulum. It played very similar to the top down Ultima series. Once you got a ship if you sailed too far off land you fell off the edge of the world - the world really was flat in this game.

The splashdown one scared me as a kid but was also super fun to see on how far it could launch you and on what maps you can trigger it PS: splashdown id a hidden gem you all must play. The music and gameplay is all on point, trust me, you won't regret it!!!

gameranx needs to do a random one (more random than usual) like the best posters in games, something silly yet a little interesting at the same time. Best sunglasses in games, best belt in a game, longest straight line in games

3:00 that is so true. me and my brother would have just as much fun with the barrier trying to see just how far it would fling us. cant help but to see subnautica and mention how extremely well done the atmosphere is. even still just watching it through this video going out in to the craters edge invokes strong feelings for me. it was pretty intense when i was playing and i cant get over it. i cant think of any other game that has done that to me.
