thanks for the recipes. I want to ask about citric acid: If I want to make soap with my own recipe, is the distilled water used to dissolve it part of the water for the lye? or should I dissolve the citric acid with water calculated separately from the lye?

Hi Sarà your soap recipes are awesome 🎉I am abi from INDIA I do have some doubts could you pls clarify , 1. What is the purpose of adding citric acid to the soap mixture ? 2. Is it really needed to discount water if we discount (super fat) for oil if I use pure coconut oil? Thanks in advance 🎉
@tellervo.7 ай бұрын
Thank you🤗 I have written about citric acid in the description box. I do recommend using a water discount in cold process soap making, it's a separate thing from superfatting😊

Hi😊 i have a question regarding soap making 😊 Have you ever made soap with potassium hydroxide? I heard it's used to make liquid soap. - does it have the same cleansing effects? - can i make liquid soap using sodium hydroxide? Thank you 💚
@Absolute_Ziro7 ай бұрын
For making liquid soap, the process is similar to bar soap, but with a key difference in the type of lye used. Liquid soap is typically made using potassium hydroxide (KOH) instead of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). However, if you specifically want to use sodium hydroxide to make a kind of liquid soap, you would adjust the process accordingly, although the end product may differ in texture and consistency from traditional liquid soaps. The basic steps would involve a similar saponification process but adjusted for liquid soap making. Here's a simplified overview using sodium hydroxide: 1. **Lye Solution Preparation:** Dissolve sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in water to prepare your lye solution. Handle with care, as NaOH is caustic. 2. **Selecting Oils:** Choose oils for your soap. Liquid soaps often use a combination of coconut oil, olive oil, and sometimes castor oil for added lather. The choice of oils can affect the clarity and thickness of the final product. 3. **Mixing and Heating:** Heat your oils in a large pot, then slowly add the lye solution while stirring continuously. This mixture must be stirred often to keep the reaction uniform. 4. **Cooking:** The soap mixture needs to be cooked for several hours. During this time, it will go through various stages, eventually becoming a homogeneous, somewhat translucent paste. 5. **Dilution:** After the soap paste has fully saponified and cooked, it is diluted with water to reach the desired consistency for liquid soap. This process can take several hours to days, as the soap paste dissolves slowly. 6. **Neutralization:** Once diluted, the liquid soap's pH can be adjusted if necessary. This is typically done with a citric acid solution to ensure the soap is not too harsh on the skin. 7. **Additives:** After dilution and pH adjustment, additives such as fragrances, colorants, or moisturizers can be incorporated into the liquid soap. 8. **Settling and Bottling:** Allow the soap to settle, then it can be decanted into bottles. Any undissolved particles or cloudiness can settle to the bottom, and the clear soap can be poured off the top. It's important to note that making liquid soap with sodium hydroxide may not yield the same results as using potassium hydroxide, particularly in terms of texture and clarity. The soap may also be less viscous. Safety precautions should be taken when handling sodium hydroxide, as it is highly caustic.

Yes, liquid soap made with sodium hydroxide can have similar cleansing effects as those made with potassium hydroxide or traditional solid soaps. The primary function of soap is to act as a surfactant, reducing the surface tension of water and binding with oil and dirt on the skin, allowing them to be rinsed away. The cleansing power of soap is primarily influenced by the types of oils or fats used in the saponification process and the specific formulation, rather than just the type of lye (sodium hydroxide for solid soap, potassium hydroxide for liquid soap). However, there are some differences to consider: - **Consistency and Feel:** Soap made with sodium hydroxide tends to be more solid, while potassium hydroxide creates a softer or even liquid soap. This means that when you attempt to create a liquid soap with sodium hydroxide, the consistency may not be as smooth or viscous as you would expect from a typical liquid soap. The texture and feel of the soap during use can affect the user's perception of its cleansing effectiveness, even if the actual cleansing action is similar. - **Lathering Properties:** The lather of the soap can also vary depending on the formulation. Liquid soaps made with potassium hydroxide often produce a more easily spreadable lather, which can affect how the soap feels and cleans. Although the type of lye contributes to the lathering properties, the choice of oils plays a significant role as well. For example, coconut oil is known to boost lather, whether in solid or liquid soap. - **pH Levels:** The pH level of the soap can influence its gentleness on the skin. Both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide can create soaps with high pH levels, but the final product's pH can be adjusted. A well-formulated liquid soap, regardless of the type of lye used, should have a pH that is effective for cleaning without being overly harsh on the skin. In summary, while the base ingredient (sodium hydroxide vs. potassium hydroxide) does play a role in the final product's consistency and some qualities, both types of soap can be formulated to provide effective cleansing. The key is in the formulation and process adjustments to ensure that the final product meets the desired qualities of a liquid soap, including its cleansing ability, consistency, lathering properties, and gentleness on the skin.

@@Absolute_Ziro Thank you very much for this comprehensive scientific answer! It seems to me that you have experience in chemistry. May I ask you another question that I couldn't find an answer on the Internet? I use essential oils in soap making, but the smell doesn't last long sadly. Is there a way to make it stronger? I love natural ingredients. Thank you very much!😊
@Absolute_Ziro7 ай бұрын
@@amalabdurrahman494 Not so much of a chemist. Just a deep passion for soapmaking. I blame (credit) Tellervo. So, it's a common challenge, but there are several strategies you can try to keep your soaps smelling wonderful for longer. Here's a quick rundown: 1. Timing is Key: Add your essential oils just before pouring the soap mixture into molds. This helps reduce heat exposure and preserves the fragrance. 2. Up the Quantity (Safely): You might be able to use more essential oil than you're currently using, but remember to stay within safe limits to avoid skin irritation. 3. Choose Wisely: Opt for essential oils that naturally last longer, like patchouli, sandalwood, or vetiver. These can help anchor lighter scents. 4. Use : Natural fixatives like clays, orris root powder, or benzoin resin can help retain and slowly release the scent. 5. Proper Curing: Extend the curing time for your soaps. A well-cured soap not only lasts longer but can also retain its scent better. 6. Create Synergy Blends: Combine essential oils that complement each other. This can create a more complex aroma that lasts longer. 7. Match Evaporation Rates: Using essential oils that evaporate at similar rates can help maintain a consistent scent profile. 8. Experiment with Ratios: Adjusting the ratios of top, middle, and base notes can influence the longevity of your soap's scent. It's all about experimenting to find what works best for your unique creations. Keep detailed notes to refine your process over time. Hope this helps, and happy soap making! 🌿🧼
