@Retrorevelations5 жыл бұрын
I would personally argue that the NES was the "best system ever made". But for its time, yes, the ColecoVision was the best system on the market, power wise, and it sold really well its first year. Unfortunately the market crashed in NA, and that was it. If the market hadn't crashed, it's very possible the NES would have had a major competitor in NA in the mid-to-late 80s.

Tommy Jarvis was playing Zaxxon in Friday The 13TH part 4. I'm 40 now but when my mum took me over to my aunt's house in the early 80's my older cousin had a colleco console and I'd get lost in the game for hours and hours I remember playing Zaxxon and this game with a alien and balloons. Eventually it was time to go home I'd be thinking awwww

By far a better system than Atari or Mattel (Intellivision) had at the time. I worked at a store that sold all 3. Coleco was done in by a hideously designed and marketed computer-video game combo called the Adam. At the store, we called it the "Adam Bomb."
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr28237 жыл бұрын
Seventh Mist id heard there was a console crash in about 1985 anyway, tho the buggy Adam Bomb you refer to could not have been helpful... they also made those ugly Cabbage Patch dolls, which were everywhere, so I'm going with bad business decisions, as they came close to bankruptcy back in 1978. They'd been around since 1932 as a leather co. COnnecticut LEather CO), moved into plastics pools and such, almost lost it in 78, got into gaming in 1983. Reports were there were 5-6 million made. Since I'm.going with bad business choices, I'll go with the lower number of 2 million, namely as I never knew another kid who had one, minus me :) Retail was 175.00, about 415.00 today.

+Maestro_T A really underrated game. I love the Bach piece. So many classic arcade games used classic music (Phoenix, Gyruss, Mario Bros., etc.) BTW, it is one of the free MAME roms that are downloadable on their website for non-commercial use. It's also one of the games listed at Funspot in Laconia, NH (although when I visited in 2014, I didn't see it).
@MaestroTJS9 жыл бұрын
Michael Welle Yeah, I downloaded a bunch of the old consoles but haven't played them in a while...I can't remember if Looping was part of it. I recall that whole down-is-up, up-is-down thing drove my family crazy, and I think we'd make mistakes even after we knew how to play it. The Smurf game also introduced me to some nice classical music.
@mwelle19 жыл бұрын
+Maestro_T I can still remember back in 1983 when I was 4 years old and my family was at an all you can eat fish place. My teenage brother had just walked over from a record store where they sold games, and my whole family was there looking at the box and instructions at the restaurant table. I remember really liking how Coleco marketed games by showing a picture of the arcade cab on the box.

Colecovision was the real deal among the first consoles like 2600/Intellivision/Emerson Arcadia 2001. Too bad it was truly overpriced, at least here in Italy. Over 50% on the top of the best price for an Intellivision console you could find on the market. Ciao!

Well done, Sir. My personal list would have included Star Trek, Time Pilot, Tutankham, and Omega Race. I almost think a "Top 20" list is too small for this phenomenal game system. I was both a Coleco and Atari fanboy back in the 80s.

I agree. Other than the higher of variety of games, I am not sure why Atari 2600 was more popular. The gameplay and graphics were always better on Coleco.
@bclarke433610 жыл бұрын
Se7en Stones Back in the day... The 2600 was out for years before the Coleco, and had a massive headstart. If you had an Atari VCS with a bunch of games, it was pretty difficult to go buy another $299 (in 1980s dollars) system when you already had a lot of money tied up in an Atari.
@pika622219 жыл бұрын

@bclarke43369 жыл бұрын
I'm just answering the question.
@gregrupedski49874 жыл бұрын
@@bclarke4336 Unfortunately most people on youtube don't know what they're talking about and weren't alive at the time. Yes, the reason why the 2600 was far more popular is obvious. The coleco did great too for a short time, though the 5200 - after a slow start - was outselling it by the time of the crash. The coleco lost steam after a great initial run of quality games, with a subsequent mediocre to poor games, and a slew of promised accessories that were delivered late and of mediocre quality. The 5200 on the other hand was just picking up steam with high quality arcade ports after a pretty lackluster (save for some gems like Defender and Centipede - by far the best ports of the time) initial set of games. There really was NO competition between Colecovision and 2600. Everyone already had a 2600 by the time CV was released. People were already moving on to computers, the CV, the 5200.....and then the crash happened.

Apparently not much copyright infringement suits in video games, as Galaxian is identical to Space Invaders. Plus many Pac man knockoffs and Slither, a Centipede copy.
