In the Mission "eviction" if you wait a little bit before you attack the first german soldiers, you can hear how they are talking about the bad situation they are in and the plan to flood the Metro system, because they think the soviets could use the Metro system as a way to reach the Königsplatz

There's actually another detail pertaining to your choice of either shooting, burning, or leaving those nazis before you enter the subway. At the start of the mission "Downfall", Reznov will read a passage from Chernov's journal that will either assess Dimitri, the player character, as either positive, negative, or somewhere in the middle, depending on what choice you make. Definitely one of my favorite details. I remember the first time I got a different assessment. I was totally surprised & impressed. WAW is a masterpiece.

Chernovs diary entries. April 30th 1945 When he first spoke of Dimitri, Reznov told tales of a hero, someone we should all aspire to be like, his bravery on the battlefield is beyond question, but he has also shown mercy, amidst the brutality of the Red Army, he is indeed a hero. April 30th 1945 When he first spoke of Dimitri, Reznov told tales of a hero, someone we should all aspire to be like, his merciless brutality defines him only as a savage, just like the rest of the Red Army, he is no hero. April 30th 1945 When he first spoke of Dimitri, Reznov told tales of a hero, someone we should all aspire to be like, at times I have seen him show mercy, and at others act with complete brutality, I do not understand him, perhaps heroes need not question their actions.

@@halfgecko3202And the biggest irony about that is it wasn't a japanese idea, but a russian one. In the Russian-Japanese War, many starved/wounded russian soldiers trapped on the hills (like in Port Arthur) by the japanese troops. They go with their hands up or one next to his stomach "begging" for help or mercy and when the enemy get close to them, they just remove the safety ring and blow with them. Even in the manga Golden Kamui have a chapter from that conflict that show that.

In the Vendetta mission, when you and Reznov are finished sniping the Germans, you can head to the back of the fountain and find the Soviet Soldier raising his head is now gone. It's remember to know historical context. World at War used to be underated because it was "another WW2" game at the time, when market was full of them and there was many CoDs from WW2 before except first modern warfare that finally changed formula and blew everyones mind. So people were really... frustrated and indifferent at time for another WW2 shooter, that's why nobody apraciated it at the time, but it was crafted masterfully. Not like Last 2 WW2 jokes from CoD frenchise.

I'm old enough to have been around back then and Modern Warfare releasing a year prior caused a massive amount of modern-war shooters to be released by the time World at War came about. People did treat it as just another WW2 game while eating up by-then "just another" Modern Warfare 2 a year later, probably because the boom was relatively new.

Not sure if you mentioned it before but in regards to the german prisoners you can choose to kill or not… In the final mission intro, Chernov will read his journal to the player and will show the player that He has been watching you the whole time too. If you have shown yourself to be cruel and execute prisoners, he would call the player out for being as blood thirsty as the enemies you kill. But if you show mercy, he would write about how you are a true hero. If you kill some but spare others, Chernov will write about how he’s confused by the player

This game was very underrated when it came out. This game came out one year after the massive success that was COD 4: MW. For people that don't know basically since the first Medal of Honor game released in 1999 the 2000's gaming market was oversaturated with WW2 games. The first 3 Call of Duty games were WW2 games too and COD 4 felt like a breath of fresh air. Even though some successful modern war setting games existed before, COD 4 still felt like the first huge mainstream modern war game and it changed the market. When World At War released many people didn't want to go back to WW2 and didn't buy it. I think many people missed out on one of the best WW2 games ever.

@@thanhlongvo7092 if you take out some of the stuff on the battleships and leave some for the go around when you rescue the sailors later you’ll get a full five, six of them and if you clear it all on the first run you’ll only grab a couple of them.

5:45 me personally before you pointed it out, i thought it looked like a solider holding some sort of rifle, and another (outline cant really be seen) holding the hammer, but not the sickle from the USSR flag, the 'hood' kinda looks a little like a helmet if you look close enough

There's a couple of things that I saw when replaying the campaign recently. In Black Cats after you've sunk the merchant ships you see in the cut scene a friendly plane gets destroyed in the air after being attacked by the zeros. That plane wasn't shot down, it was sliced by the first zero it encountered. Near the end of the campaign when I was playing on veteran, I think it was the second last level. In the heat of the battle I saw a German soldier hang themselves off of a tree, and it happened more than once.

Interesting details. In chernov's journal he will say different things, and you find this out at the end of the game. If you gave away your position during vendetta, let the German troops bleed out during their land their blood, and shoot the german soldiers, he calls you a hero, do one of these and the rest opposite then he says "maybe a hero doesn't question their actions." Now doing all of them opposite, he calls you a brute like the rest of the red army. (1. Good ending 2. Neutral ending 3. Bad ending) All of these counts as different endings btw

I always thought the blood splatter was the pied piper (pipe in one hand and walking stick in the other) as there is a rather famous statue of children at play in the town square - so it symbolizes the loss of innocence in bloodshed.

In the Black Cat mission, one of the most unnoticeable detail about that mission is that when you shoot the Japanese ships, it contained multiple prisoners of war who were in an inhuman condition or diseases that were brought from the Unit 731 Experiment. So that means, you also killed friendlies as well.

another detail in vendetta is that the knocked out tank in front of the building at the start of the level is a Tiger ll which was not fielded until 1944 long after the battle of Stalingrad and is thus very anachronistic. WaW is an amazing game but it is still not without its flaws.

I recently watched some of the missions from this game on KZbin for the nostalgia and in "Eviction", in the first room you encounter enemies, this is after the scene with the execution of the lone German soldier begging for his life at the beginning, if you hide and don't immediately open fire on them and if you speak German, you can hear them talking about flooding the metro tunnels, which I thought was a cool detail.

You don't need them to. It is still a nice-looking game and perfect as it is. Please don't feed the corporate money hungry machine. You could pick up a 7th Gen console and a copy for just a small amount more than you would pay for a remaster. It is still very much alive and people will play custom matches for less popular game modes.

3:10 The guy who made that Easter egg lost his job over it. He asked if he could they told him no but he did it anyways. The reason behind it is they wanted to show respect for the ones who fought World War II and they found what he did was very disrespectful also he went against orders.

One detail that I thought was near was the plane that crashed in the beginning of little resistance. During the real invasion of Peleliu, specifically above Beach White 1 where the game takes place, a TBM-1 Torpedo bomber from squadron VT-51 of the Carrier USS San Jacinto and tried dropping ordinance behind the beach. Somehow it's bombs detonated prematurely though and it blew up out of the sky, similar to what we see in the game. Another cool detail is the inclusion of the number 115 in cod lore. This again ties back to the battle of Peleliu in real life, the battle where some of the Marines missions take place in-game. PFC. Eugene Sledge of 5th Reg. 1st Marine Division recalled in his memoir that the temperature soared to 115°F during the battle. This number was later used in the game for element 115 in zombies.
