Imagine a Rottweiler with slightly taller legs, a Siberian Husky with a shorter coat, or a Tibetan Mastiff less majestic without its signature lion-like mane. Did you know that today's gentle giant, the Great Dane, used to be a bit smaller? Or that the wrinkly, lovable Bulldog didn't always have so many folds? Believe it or not, some of your favorite dog breeds looked very different just 100 years ago!

You might think the person putting the video together has no clue about breeds or using image search. Setter section displayed cocker spaniels, a Maltese in the West Highland terrier one and many other mistakes. It was getting so annoying I stopped watching it

With a little more info this would be a great video about the evils of selective dog breeding for stupid shallow traits. With bull dogs this caused skin fold dermatitis, cherry eye, mange, foot infections, and brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, and shortened life spans. Similar problems were introduced in these other breeds as well, including immune disorders, blood disorders, neurolgical and behavioral disorders, hearing, vision, othopedic and heart problems as well as cancer.

What is now known as the Irish Red & White Setter was the original Irish setter bred for hunting. With the coming of dog shows breeders bred for red colour. Perhaps you should check your facts...

Actually Rottweilers were used by the Roman armies to herd cattle and as war dogs. That's how they got to Germany in the first place! My friend has bred and trained Rottweilers as both tracking dogs to find people and as cadaver dogs to locate human remains buried under earth and drowning victims under water. He has always preferred this breed because of their strength and stamina over rough terrain.

Refined? Is ruining a dog for the sake of show. A show dog has little to none of the trates it was originally bread for. Because of this most dogs today suffer a host of health problems directly comming from the refinement practice.

you forgot the pomeranian which used to be called the manchurian spitz. the manchurian spitz part of the genetic makeup for an extinct breed called the argentinian polar dog or argentine polar dog. a very specialized breed that really deserves it's own video. the pomeranian used to be a much different dog than it is now. it's hard to find any info on it though. it took me forever of researching the manchurian spitz before i learned it is what we now as the pomeranian and has been bred down in size.

There is some mistakes, and one that I would like to point is that, the Chow Chow Bread is divided in two. That is the original one, with an appearance more close to a fox or wolf tipe, even with a more wild and independent behaviour, and the the American Chow Chow, with a calm, relaxed and lazy behaviour, and with a thicker coat, and with a weird shaped nose similar to the Sharpei.

Regardless of the accuracy of this video, it breaks my heart. Selecive breeding per se doesn’t need to be a bad thing. However, due to the focus on looks over functionality and health, so many breeds have been, IMHO, ruined. Inability to breathe comfortably, skin issues, joint issues, heart issues, spinal issues, severe and incurable mental illness due to inbreeding (aka Sudden Rage Syndrome), highly increased incidence of cancer, digestive issues, vastly shortened life span, etc etc etc. Anyone who’s had to have a beloved pet euthanasised because they literally had their spine explode (herniated disk) and severing a good portion of their spinal cord, rendering them paralysed and incontinent (Dachshund), or condemned to a life of excruciating pain from the hips down that even a hip replacement won’t help (severe hip dysplasia and muscle dystrophy, German Shepherd), or permanent shortness of breath so severe they die of heat stroke, English Bulldog) will understand what I mean. I've consciously abstained from owning the breeds I mentioned for those very reasons. The dogs I've had and that weren't rescued had well-researched lineage, showing as diverse ancestry as possible with absolutely no in-breeding up to four generations back, with which I mean completely separate lineage. Medical testing for the most common genetic afflictions known for the breed not just on the parents, but at least three generations back as well. Not just the breeder's word but the paperwork to back it up. I don’t care if the lineage boasts ‘champions’ as the shows still focus way too much on physical traits such as how tall/short the dog is, how ‘sharp’ the ‘stop’ is (connection between the skull and the bridge of the nose) or how short the nose is instead of how long, how ’long’ the back is etc. A lot of those breed standards are minimum standards health-wise. Who wants a dog with cranial bones that didn’t fuse, leaving them vulnerable to brain injury? Or with a skull too small to fit it’s eyes? A dog that’s in danger of blowing the discs between their spine’s vertebra when chasing a ball or even simply jumping out of their bed? A dog unable to play without the danger of it choking or overheating? A dog stuck with a permanent rash driving it insane simply because those skin folds look pretty to some? Not me.

collie is not border collie. They are two different races, in fact very different. American knowledge about European breeds is generally deficient. They tend to make breeds worse, such as the Doberman, which in Europe continues to be an imposing dog with a guard temperament, and in North and South America they have transformed the dogs into dogs that look like greyhounds because they are so thin and slender. Well, everyone has their own tastes. In any case, best of luck to you, looking for more accurate information.

I dont like that you use the word refine so many times for breeds that have been made physically (health wise) worse. I think showing dogs has been one of the worst things to happen to dogs in general as the focus on appearence and 'conforming' to breed standards that way has only led to more extremes. Surely the focus should have been on the dogs ability to do their job not what they look like

When making those videos you're clearly following an educational purpose. You should pay attention on displaying correct pictures of the breeds you're talking about... Bright example is the Irish Setter.. You had placed the pics of the SPANIEL there instead , twice! In Bassett hounds you had applied a BIGGLE at some point.. Collie, opposing the first pic, you moved on to the border collie, while later referring to Lassie, which is again, Scottish collie or the "rough" collie... Not border collie.. Those are completely two different breeds.. At the bulldog of nowadays you advertised bully, which comes from pitbull line.. There's plenty of real buldogs.. Please pay attention, as you're ruining your own work, making it sloppy and lame.. Unfortunately.

@WDLC1911
@WDLC1911 20 күн бұрын
@@dottiscamprunamuck2830 the “American Boxer” is a joke compared to what the dog originally was. The Bullenbeiser was like the Victorian Era English Baiting Bulldog in 1800 and the gamebred Pit Bull today: considered far to intense for society so they mixed the *PHILO KUON* English Bulldog into the Bullenbeiser which gave it the shorter muzzle but many had short, *straight* muzzles. The latter dogs were still athletic dogs with no breathing problems. Once the Kennel Clubs got hold of them - they ruined them.
@WDLC1911
@WDLC1911 20 күн бұрын
@@dottiscamprunamuck2830 I would blend catchweight gamebred Pit Bulldogs into the modern Boxer to make it a much more athletic dog, more physically sound and much more drive (which may make them a handful, admittedly).
